Cave Story PSP demo now available! photo

Now that all y'all got your PSP homebrew on courtesy of Lumines, you might be feeling overwhelmed -- thinking "my God, so much crap to load, how will I ever decide?" That's why I'm here, baby. Allow me to direct yer browser to the LiveJournal post of one ufo_z, wherein he showcases the first demo of his port of Pixel's immortal Dokutsu Monogatari, known overseas as Cave Story -- that's right, running on the PSP.

As it turns out, previously announced efforts to port the game to handhelds by US developer Variant Interactive have fallen through -- a pity, too, because if there's anything this game needs, it's widespread distribution. Genius like this can't be restrained to a niche audience of diehard Metroidvania fans on PCs, after all. ufo_z has picked up where Variant left off, successfully coding a demo of Cave Story up to the first boss, rendered in brilliant widescreen.

This is definitely Cave Story as it was meant to be played. While the PC version is just as enjoyable with big, beefy speakers and a solid USB controller, there's something magical about Pixel's brilliant little game rendered on a handheld. If your PSP is capable of running homebrew -- and by now it better, what with that Lumines business -- don't hesitate to give this a download, especially if you've never played it before. It's one of the greatest games ever made, and it's freeware

As Destructoid's resident whore for all things Cave Story, I'll keep you guys updated on ufo_z's progress as he updates the rest of us.

[Thanks, Belvie!]

I'd break my "ain't never gonna cosplay" rule if I could find someone to make me a badass Balrog costume.

I've played a bit of this game but there is something about free games that keep me from finishing them. For some reason I will pay money for this game and probably play it sitting in front of my computer or something. Somewhere I believe I was brainwashed.

welcome, Dtoid, to the wonderful world of homebrew. i bought a psp at launch and didn't even buy a game for it until the first bit of homebrew broke for the 1.5 firmware [the best firmware next to custom] my psp stayed at 1.5 until about 3 months ago, i finally took the plunge and flashed some custom firmware.

new or old, i've got it all. thanks for the tip, i'm going to put it on the old psp right now. [:

Hmm, heard about this game from quite a few people. Guess I'll have to give it a try.

I heard about cave story from the Radiohead website a long time ago. Jonny Greenwood loves that game... I can see why... it rocks. Too bad I don't have any intentions of getting a PSP.

Wasn't this game originally made by one guy all by himself? That's pretty damn impressive. Been meaning to check this out on PC for a while.

I thought the Lumines exploit was just a "Hello World" application showing that Homebrew could be done on a PSP.
I didn't think they cooked up the actual hack yet.

I absolutely love the original Cave Story done by Studio Pixel. A remarkably fresh freeware game that had great characters.

It's a shame this came out for the PSP and not the DS, but I am glad to see that these folks are finally getting some well-deserved mass recognition.

Ah yay. Now that I've been reminded of it's awesomeness I'm gonna download CS again for another playthrough. I say another, I never did finish it before.

Savant, if by shame, you really mean blessing, then I totally agree. I can't think of a more deserving platform than the PSP for the best free/homebrew PC games ever made.

It take me a good number of tries to finally beat Hell, but I can beat it pretty easily now. Such a great game...
