Cave Story coming to WiiWare this holiday season

Cave Story coming to WiiWare this holiday season photo
     Cave Story

Burried in this official press release for Nintendo's E3-killing press conference is a little nugget of sprite-based gold that got me so happy, I actually gave my computer monitor the thumbs-up. Cave Story, the totally free 2D action/platformer, is making the jump to retail release on WiiWare sometime before 2009. At least, that's what I'm inferring NoA means by "Holiday 2008". Not only that, but the port will receive some new stuff, the details of which remain unknown. If it's anything like the new stuff Tumiki Fighters and de Blob received in their jumps from PC freeware to Wii retail, then we're in for something good.

The first time I heard about Cave Story was back in February when our resident game analyst supreme, Anthony Burch, profiled the title. After reading that post, I played Cave Story for half an hour and thought "Wow, that's awesome! I can't wait to finish it!" Here we are months later and I still haven't done so, as PC gaming doesn't work for a guy like me. Every moment I'm on the computer, I'm either scouring for news about videogames, writing about videogames, or making sprites for videogames. To have Cave Story on my TV and away from all the tempting "work" that my PC offers will be more than worth the price (probably $5 or $10).

Speaking of sprite making, who wants me to make a Cave Story sprite for the next revision of the Mega Man Maker?

I'll gladly pay for this despite playing it through for free already. Everything about this game is so beautiful. I hope Pixel makes enough money off of downloads to retire in a palace.

This game deserves as wide an audience as possible. The heart that Pixel put into it is so readily palpable while playing. The music alone is filled with so much emotion.

So is Nintendo publishing this? I seem to recall Pixel either refused to accept donations from people who felt he deserved some payment for the game or when asked he said he's just happy people enjoy his work. I wonder what the details of the deal are and who is working on the new content/features.

I'll probably buy it as well even though I too have played through it already.

I echo Tristero's sentiments and am looking forward to giving Pixel my money.

I thought this was coming to PSP at some point as well. I don't remember how long ago I read about it or if it was even true. Doesn't really matter though because there's already an awesome PSP version out there, you just need CFW to play it.

I haven't played it, but I've heard many good things. So I won't play this until it comes out on Wii Ware, to give it many dollars.

Here's a link to the PSP port, playable on any hacked PSP:
http://cavestorypsp.googlepages.com/

Not wanting to play on PC is no excuse. (Note: the script errors are not distracting. There's about 5 cases where enemies appear before the edge of the screen because of widescreen, and there's two lines of dialog that have the last character cut off. All and all, I think it plays better on PSP than even the original PC version)

Oh, and buy the game when it hits the Wii!

If you haven't played through this game at least once there is something wrong with you.

Ohhh... I am really looking forward to hearing what new features they put in for the port.

The only thing that bugged me about that game was that there is apparently multiple endings, but no discernible way to get a particular one. :S

I'm more interested in who got the author's permission to port this.

@Koholint:
You'd say something like that wouldn't you.

LOL, today I totally butchered my old blog post about this, that I posted months ago. (I erase the text in some of my old, irrelevant c-blog posts, so I can preview new posts without actually opening a new post.) So, uh, I told you so, even though I can't prove it. D'OH.

Anyway, this is awesome. We all owe it to the game's creators to buy it and make it a hit, if you can. Doesn't matter if it is/was free. Support indies. Buy it.

I remembered that Sharpless, and I believed you the first time.

I even looked for your old c-blog for reference, but couldn't find it.

@Jonathan Holmes
I hide all my older blog posts, so I can use the comment tracker to track new threads. (I hope I'm not the only one who has to do that.) Of course, if Niero fixes that, you'll be able to find all my wonderous blog posts... :)

Thanks for the votes of confidence, Jonathan and Sam. I love how poor my timing is. :)

Wow, I played through the original many times and looks like I'll play the WiiWare version a lot too. The game is amazing and is my favorite free doujin/indie game. I'm glad that more people will be able to play it now, and that pixel will get some money. New stuff is also pretty cool to have, I hope it's a new level (harder than Sacred Grounds plz!).

I don't even have a Wii but I shit myself when I read this. I am so excited, Cave Story is one of my favorite games of all time and I am so stoked that he'll get to make money off of it because he deserves it so so much.

Cool! Everyone should play this game. Its fantastic. First play through I missed a pretty big plot development (no spoilers, pretty sure fans of the game will know tho) and I didn't realize until I was at the end boss. So right there I decided to start over and stupidly I went for the best ending.

I say stupidly, because I went after it without the knowledge of how much of a nightmare the last hidden dungeon was going to be. So there my save sits, right before the final dungeon and I still haven't beaten the game, because I suck :(

Still tho, one of the most wonderfully crafted 2D games I've seen in a long time. Especially when you consider it was entirely made by one man.

If any indie game deserves to be on WiiWare, it's this one. I don't have a Wii but if I did I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
