Cave has released two new videos of the side-scrolling Xbox 360 shmup Akai Katana Shin -- the HD console update of Arcade shooter Akai Katana. While both of them are tutorial videos you'll probably skip through if you can't read Japanese or if you are impatient, the last minute or so has some gameplay footage.

The above video displays 'Akai Katana mode' -- the arcade version -- and the below video shows off the 'Akai Katana Shin' mode that's new for the Xbox 360 version. This game completely passed under my radar when it was announced, but it looks pretty damn awesome.

Sadly this game is getting a region-locked Japanese release on May 26th (unless it has been briefly delayed like Otomedius X), but Cave has tweeted a while back that "hopefully one of our publisher friends will be interested as it looks grand." So, everyone contact Aksys and Rising Star Games -- who released Deathsmiles in North America and Europe -- and demand this to be released in your region!

Check the other videos below while I wait to play Akai Katana Shin in 2013...

Isn't it odd that all of the Bullethell shooters are released on eggsbawks?

Sadly, Aksys already said a few weeks ago they'll never publish another shmup release like Deathsmiles again, so they're out.

I want it so bad though! I hope they find someone. If all else fails, port it to iOS.

Time to get my Red Ring Rico'd Asian system fixed.
That 80's rock music looks worth its play alone.

@Magnalon did they say why they won't do it?
I thought Death Smiles sold decently in the west.

@uzy
I'll have to find the link.

They said it did sell " ok", but not enough to turn a real profit, I believe.

Either way they're not interested in shmups atm.

Bah, that's too bad. I don't know how much Deathsmiles sold, but the UK price has dropped to 18 pounds very fast (within a couple of weeks I think). I imported it from the UK a week ago for around 13 pounds ($21-ish) which seemed like a perfectly reasonable price (regular new titles are at least 3 times that).

Steep pricedrops at online retailers usually indicate that the game is not selling very well, so there's that.

Ok here you go - finally dug it up.

This post was by an AKSYS employee.

I found this from shmups on Twitter, which is probably the best source of news out there for shmups right now - http://twitter.com/shmups - follow the about link and register for their forum if you're a fan, as our own BulletMagnet is a mod there :D

I really wish they'd bring this stuff to PS3. Its all I really miss in gaming, and its not worth it right now to invest in this xbox doodat.

@shmups followed! I hope they'll just release these kind of games on XBLA/PSN/Steam in the future, as I don't really care to have to insert a disc to play Deathsmiles or Raiden IV for half an hour.

@cap yeah... Not a really good system to release niche titles on. Its been proven by sales at least. Its also been proven how well niche titles sell on ps3/psp. Judging from the success of atlus, nis america, x seed and so on sticking the niche japanese games on playstation brand.

Thanks for the props, Mag. :)

Anyways, as anyone who knows me would expect, I've got this one preordered...on a related note, Bullet Soul and Eschatos both arrived in the mail today (they're region-free, if anyone else wants to snag 'em), so I've gotta split!

Watching through the trailer, it's like, "Okay, yeah, I think I get it," and then at the end when it all comes together... it doesn't compute. Too much stuff going on at once!

@Darren: Actually, it DOES make sense (mostly) once you take a few minutes to piece it together, but perhaps I'm not the one to ask, as I'm pretty well used to all the wacky stuff Cave does with its scoring mechanics.

Cave must be having some success releasing this kind of stuff on 360, as they continue to do it.

Anyway, here's hoping it makes it to the States in some form.

@Magnalon

"We were reasonably satisfied with the performance of Deathsmiles, but we are not currently pursuing any other similar games."

You made it sound much more dire than it is with this comment:

"Sadly, Aksys already said a few weeks ago they'll never publish another shmup release like Deathsmiles again, so they're out."

Two radically different statements. How can they pursue localization of Akai Katana when the native version isn't even finished? And also, they won't announce anything that could potentially spill their beans until an official press release. I think Aksys will continue with Cave in the future.

I still think theres hope we might see more English localised cave games in both PAL and the US as Cave if they believe no other US publisher will come forward might allow RSG to release dual region or RF.

Ild imagine that localising shmups is very simple and should return a profit as long as the costs are kept low and if Cave are good partners. Luckly RSG get this.

I think what has got Aksys' knickers in a twist is that they had overly high expectations (and so did many of the fans) thas DeathSmiles would be the vanguard of a shmup comeback just like SFIV was for VS fighters. This would never happen as western gamers get fighters while shmups are much harder for gamers to understand whats so good about them compared to arena based shooters like geometry wars which are big hits because they are easier to pick up and play

I do appaud this site for running articles on Cave games as its a crying shame their games arnt available to western gamers

Still even if Red Katana or DFK Black Label which is a fan favorite were to see localisations it wont happen for a while yet as DFK hasnt been out in Japan that long and Red Katana isnt even out and Cave will want to make as much money as they can from domestic and especially all the western importers who might not buy the Japanese version if an localised version is announced.

So all we can do is play the waiting game, still DeathSmiles 2 has been out in Japan for a while now so we might hear news about this over the next couple of months
