Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker takes the core idea and runs with it

Super Mario 3D World was fantastic, and one of the reasons was its incredible variety throughout. Captain Toad made his first playable appearance there, with his levels acting as a sort of palate cleanser between Mario's runn...

Mario Maker will make a level designer out of you

Mario Maker is a drag-and-drop level creator, letting you use classic (and newer) Mario game tiles and props to create your own stages. I gave it a spin here at E3 to try to create the next great Mario stage. I found that while making your own stages is quite easy, making a truly fun one takes a bit more work.

Meet Yoshi's New Island, same as the old island

Do you know what's fun? Making Yoshi noises. Come on. Do it. The tongue grab. The flutter jump. The ground pound. Such an animated dinosaur. Hamza and Dale are really good at making Yoshi noises. Yoshi's New Island is also fun.

Super Mario 3D World is an absolute blast to play

I played Super Mario 3D World at E3 this past year and for whatever reason it just didn't interest me at all. Yeah, it's neat and it's about time they made a 3D Mario game with mulitplayer, but the demo made it feel like yet ...

New Super Mario Bros. U Boost Rush is ass-boosting fun

Quick hands-on with Mario & Sonic 2012 Olympic Games photo
Quick hands-on with Mario & Sonic 2012 Olympic Games
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Mario, Sonic and all their respective friends and enemies are back again in the mini-game collection based on the Olympic Games. There will be around 30 new events in the package plus some returning events from Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Sega showed off three new Olympic events which were cannoning, badminton and show jumping. Yes, it is pretty ridiculous watching Bowser race around on a horse.

As for the dream events, only dream discus and dream long jump were playable and both were pretty fun. Dream discus sees all the characters racing on flying discuses and collecting as many coins before they reach the finish line. Dream long jump sees the players running through a course until they're the last surviving player.

These dream games are a lot like Mario Party or New Super Mario Bros. as all four players will be playing at once and everyone can attack each other in order to gain the upper hand. The dream games also take place on stages from past Sonic and Mario games. Dream discus took place in a level from Sonic Adventure and dream long jump took place on a cute little Yoshi's Island stage.

Really, there's not much to say. If you're a fan of these type of mini-game collections and enjoyed the previous Olympic Games, then you already know if you'll be picking this up when it's released later this year for the Wii and 3DS. Also, Sega has yet to provide any assets for Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games so here's the two in furry outfits. Yup.

Look, I'm not about to ruin the first ten minutes of a game I'm about to go out and buy the second Best Buy opens up today. However, if you're still on the fence for some reason about picking up Super Mario Galaxy 2 or you're one of those guys who "sold his Wii and has never been happier" then this Ten Minute Taste should be right up your alley.

If the ten minutes above doesn't wet your whistle, we will, of course, have a full review coming your way shortly. However, if you want a solid recomendation now, perhaps this email Chad sent the Dtoid staff after getting the game yesterday will suffice:

Nintendo has been on a big kick showing off Super Mario Galaxy 2 this year. Nick brought us a preview detailing Yoshi and some power-ups tied to the lovable dinosaur. Then Ben brought us a preview detailing the rock power-up and the hub world.

Destructoid was invited out to Nintendo once again to check out Super Mario Galaxy 2, and we got to see the new cloud power-up, the bigger focus on two-player co-op and Super Mario Galaxy 2's version of the Super Guide featured in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Jump on through the break for our latest look at Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Super Mario Galaxy 2: Lighting up & rocking out photo
Super Mario Galaxy 2: Lighting up & rocking out
by Ben Perlee

It would take a lot to top the original Super Mario Galaxy. After all, that game set the standards of what the Wii is capable of doing with both graphics and gameplay. For Nintendo to make a game that was that good from the ground up would be silly. Thus, it's pretty easy to see why they would just build on the Galaxy motif with Super Mario Galaxy 2

Now, if you saw Nick's hands-on with the game just last month, you know that there are some new additions to it, especially in regards to Yoshi. Since then, we've been fortunate enough to see a newer build of the game, one that includes all new "galaxies" as well as the addition of new power-ups and abilities for both Mario and Yoshi. It is certainly nothing that shakes up the Galaxy formula, but these additions, among other things, definitely highlight the idea that Super Mario Galaxy 2 is its own game.

Hit the jump for hands, hats, and... er... tongues-on with Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Back in the saddle with Yoshi in Super Mario Galaxy 2 photo
Back in the saddle with Yoshi in Super Mario Galaxy 2
by Nick Chester

For it being the first time it showed Super Mario Galaxy 2 to the press, Nintendo brought a surprising amount of the game to the company's media summit in San Francisco this week. Nearly 10 levels varying in style and difficulty were playable; they showed off a number of new items, features, and platforming challenges.

Make no mistake -- despite the fact that Nintendo claims Galaxy 2 is a full-on sequel to the 2007 Wii title, the game most certainly has the same vibe. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for one to mistake it for the original after a quick, passing glance. And even after getting my hands on the title, it's obvious that the basic mechanics have remained true to the original, including gravity-defying spherical worlds and platforming.

Galaxy 2's greatest strengths seem to lie in its new locales, power-ups, and -- perhaps most important -- the return of Mario's trusty dinosaur pal, Yoshi. I played a number of the new levels, with a focus on Yoshi, and came away impressed (and excited) by Nintendo's latest Mario offering.

Hit the jump for Yoshi-on details of Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Super Paper Mario intro: So cute I want to crush a baby's skull

Take a look at this thing. Awwww. Doesn't the intro and gameplay footage of Super Paper Mario for the Wii just make you want to take a box full of kittens and drown them in gypsy tears? Well, at least that's the feeling I get. Look at them! They're soooo cute. Awww.

On a side note, good to know that GameCube development hasn't gone to waste. *rimshot* Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all night.

GDC 2007: New Super Mario Galaxy video
by Papa Niero

Here's the new Super Mario Galaxy trailer, served fresh from Miyamoto's GDC 2007 presentation. There's some really amazing stuff in here: large bosses, strange puzzles, and extremely creative level design unlike any other game I've ever seen. Miyamoto promised we'd see the game this year when he's convinced that we'll have happy faces throughout the entire gameplay experience.

The trailer came on halfway through the presentation when a few heads were bobbing from sleep deprivation and energized the crowd ... for about five minutes and then back to the Wife-o-meter. Ron said it best: "With the exception of the Mario video, are we at GDC 2005?"

The new Super Smash Bros. Brawl trailer
by Savant
Here it is, something I know that a lot of you out there have been waiting for has finally found its way to being posted on the internet. The new trailer features the new characters and a heaping helping of fresh gameplay. The only gripe I have about this trailer is the lack of the over-the-top "ultra moves" that were shown in the first trailer (such as Mario's screen-clearing fireball.) We also now know that there will be some destructible elements involved on some of the stages which will add to the action. Take a gander for yourself and enjoy the new footage! (And for the record, Meta Knight looks like a beast!)view full story + comments

Super Paper Mario jaw-droppin' Famitsu scans
by Papa Niero
Mario has pretty much dominated my week. I've looked for Playstation 3 stuff, I've looked for Xbox 360 stuff, and the damn plumber keeps popping up. And I couldn't be more excited about this new intrusion found by Kayka over at ConsoleWars who stole from Famitsu who in turn we are stealing from (that's a mouthful) - the new Paper Mario game looks completely insane. It has everything that is awesome about video games - a retro throwback, over-the-top powerups, full screen bosses, and most importantly hints at some effects and gameplay surprises we have not seen before. CHECK IT OUT. Saw it? More pics here, here and a gameplay video here.view full story + comments
