Review: DOOM 3 BFG Edition photo
Review: DOOM 3 BFG Edition
by Jim Sterling

Mention DOOM 3 to most fans, and the common (disparaging) response will be, "Monster Closets." Earning criticism for its jump scares, lack of charisma, and stylistic departure from previous DOOM titles, DOOM 3 has not aged well in the eyes of most fans.

This particular fan, however, disagrees with consensus.

DOOM 3 holds up as a solid and atmospheric horror shooter, and the new BFG Edition works, not only as a celebration of a game that gets an unfair reputation, but as a worthy collection of the game's three main entries, sporting as it does DOOM and DOOM II. Monster Closets be damned!

QuakeCon Preview: Going to hell in Doom 3's Lost Mission photo
QuakeCon Preview: Going to hell in Doom 3's Lost Mission
by Allistair Pinsof

[Destructoid is grabbing its rail gun and heading to Dallas, Texas this weekend for QuakeCon. Stay posted for game news, previews, and strange happenings from the infamous LAN room.]

In 2004, Doom 3 was a disappointment. It neither captured the speed of the original game or the lofty cinematic ambitions it tried to chase after. Instead, it was a slow, methodical shooter that leaned on its horror elements far more than previous games in the series. The game was at its best when it left the tight corridors of the space station and took the player back to hell -- thankfully BFG Edition's exclusive Lost Mission expansion returns to this setting while offering a lot more.

E3: Playing DOOM 3: BFG Edition in spooky 3D photo
E3: Playing DOOM 3: BFG Edition in spooky 3D
by Jim Sterling

Today I played DOOM 3: BFG Edition and it was so intensely scary that I did an actual poo in my underpants. Fortunately, it was just a small and hard one, so I don't think anybody noticed. I just slyly shook it out of my leg next to some other jerk and let Bethesda deal with it.

The thing about the poo was how spherical it was. We're talking an almost perfect globe. At one point, Pete Hines kicked the poo and it rolled like a marble. I did not see it again after that.

I did, however, enjoy DOOM 3: BFG Edition
