In BaraBariBall you lose your balls when you jump

I played BaraBariBall over a year ago at GDC 2013 and it was fun as heck. I liked it BaraBari much. But it's still not out. Not yet, anyways. It's coming this year to PC, PS4, and PS3 as a part of the amazing Sportsfriends. ...

Not a Hero's 2D cover-based shooting killed me about a dozen times

Devolver Digital had a great showing at PAX East this year. Though Hotline Miami 2 might have had the most buzz going in, not long into the show people were shouting about Not a Hero. Developed by Roll7 (of OlliOlli fame), it...

Heart Forth, Alicia is the best Kickstarter I've seen in ages

There's been a resurgence of Metroidvania games in recent years thanks to crowdfunding but not all of them have lived up to our lofty ambitions for the genre. Many haven't. As such, I hope you're not so skeptical as to avoid...

La-Mulana 2 aims to be more 'intuitive,' still hard as heck

La-Mulana was regarded by some as the hardest game ever. This isn't going to change, though Nigoro's Takami Naramura wants it to be slightly more intuitive so perhaps all those deaths don't lead to warranted frustration and ...

Open world platformer/space shooter A.N.N.E is a retro buffet

Really, why even play clearly deficient retro games? I mean, where are the shmup segments in Metroid? Where are the open world segments in Contra? Where are the line segments in a bisected triangle? A.N.N.E. is one part platformer, one part shmup, one part RPG. And this year at PAX A.N.N.E. has all its systems in play. Maybe we'll all get to play it this year.

Boy, The Hong Kong Massacre sure looks like Hotline Miami

Hotline Miami by way of Stranglehold or any other John Woo flick, at least. Which is appropriate for the setting. Though I'm also reminded of Michael Mann's Miami Vice movie for some reason. I guess it can't exactly be Hotli...

Addiction allegory Spate's soundtrack is available now

Spate made a bit of a stir with its release last month, if not for its attempt to tackle themes more mature than shooting bullets at beefy dudes, then for its dated representation of absinthe as it exists and is understood to...

Ackk Studios is going all out for its next RPG, Y2K

I knew to expect interesting things from Ackk Studios after the flawed but compelling Two Brothers. Even then, I wasn't mentally prepared for the team's newest game, Y2K. I came in knowing little about the turn-based RPG oth...

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime puts two people in a neon spaceship built for eight

Navigating through the outer reaches of space is hard. There are multiple systems to account for, from piloting to shields to weapons control, each with its own specialized training necessary. Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime ...

SoundSelf is an experience that puts you into a trance

SoundSelf was one of the more interesting experiences I had at PAX, or any other convention for that matter. I put on the Oculus Rift, the headset, and then hummed into the microphone where the visuals and audio would react ...

Soda Drinker Pro goes next-gen

You wanna talk next-gen? The next generation of games isn't about graphics or motion control or laser beams or whatever. It's about soda. Sweet, sweet b-b-b-b-bonus soda. And that soda is coming to Xbox One later this year. S...

So Kero Blaster is apparently pretty much finished, despite Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya (Cave Story) originally scrapping the entire project (known as Gero Blaster) and doing the whole game over. It stars a businessman frog and hi...

Make cats have sex in the name of natural selection in Mew-Genics

This Holmes interview with Mew-Genics' Tommy Refenes at its first public showing explains every reason I badly want this game. Cat animations based on personality sound great. I am already laughing at the mental image of, "d...
