A Steam store page has appeared for Half-Life 2: Episode 3 and I'm sure it's totally legit. It's actually just a joke from CheapShark, but wouldn't it be funny if Valve really did announce it today? It being real would be the best joke of all.

Review: Black Mesa photo
Review: Black Mesa
by Joshua Derocher

Half-Life is a great game, but it's been over ten years since its release. What if Half-Life were made in 2007 instead of 1999? Black Mesa is a re-imaging of Half-Life using Source, the engine powering Half-Life 2. Valve has already created an HD remake of Half-Life called Half-Life Source, but that was a simple port over to the new engine. The textures, level design, and models remained the same. Black Mesa is more than a simple remake of the original game. It's a complete re-imaging of the core game with new level design, character models, textures, voice acting, and gameplay.

It's an ambitious game that was created by a group of modders and fans over the course of seven years. While the core ideas of the levels are still here, each one has been completely recreated, resulting in an overall larger game. Half-Life was about twelve hours long while Black Mesa is easily over fifteen, and Black Mesa doesn't even yet include the original's final four levels.

High-definition remakes have been done before, but this is a creative recreation of a game. It's more than just sexy textures and layers of post-processing tricking us into thinking an old game is new again.

Impressions: Black Mesa is awesome photo
Impressions: Black Mesa is awesome
by Joshua Derocher

Black Mesa is now available, I am playing it, and I can tell you that it's awesome. It is an amazing recreation of the original Half-Life with updated graphics and sounds. We'll have a review up soon. In the meantime, here's 30 minutes of gameplay and my early impressions.

I went back and played some of Half-Life yesterday so I would have the original fresh in my mind when I started playing Black Mesa. The old game definitely looks dated, and this new visual update greatly enhances the experience. The textures are all very crisp and HD, the lighting is dynamic and modern, and physics have been fully added using the Havok engine.

Black Mesa will come out September 14, world is ending

The President of the United States of America:

"Good evening, men and women of America. At 5:42 PST, today, our elite crew of internet lurkers spotted a post from Black Mesa Source Project Leader Carlos Montero on the mod's official message board. Montero states that the long delayed Half-Life remake, made in Source, will arrive September 14. The soundtrack is available now.

"Many Americans have died since Black Mesa was announced in 2005. It has become the Duke Nukem Forever of its time. After years of terrorizing American citizens through the odd Reddit comment from a developer and mysterious screenshot, we can finally say that we got the bastard!

"God bless Black Mesa and God bless America! Also, this initial release will not contain the final chapters in Xen or multiplayer. WTF? Well, whatever. At least we are getting something. I'm going to go get a Big Mac. President out!"

The 'geek' question: hobbyist vs. intellectual photo
The 'geek' question: hobbyist vs. intellectual
by Ryan Perez

The one thing that has always bugged me the most about sports is the use of the word "we." As in, "We won!" No, you didn't win, John Sofaturd from Nothingsville, Ohio. You didn't do anything except sit on your ass and obtain a contact high from the fruitful efforts of someone else who worked their ass off for their success.

To my disappointment, gamers can sometimes have this same habit. Not too long ago, a friend of mine posted an image on Facebook associating the reclusive and unorthodox lifestyle of Nikola Tesla with that of a gamer/comic lover/D&D player, so on and so forth. This was all accomplished via the generalization of the term "geek." Sports fans, meet gamers, the DeVito to your Schwarzenegger.

This made me realize that the debate should not be regarding the differences between "geek" and "nerd"; the two terms virtually mean the same thing, these days. What the debate should be, though, is what different types of geeks/nerds exist. I was led to wonder just why my geek friends enjoy associating themselves with scientific geniuses, when they know practically nothing about science, themselves, as well as how to distinguish the two.

I then proceeded to try that good old-fashioned sociological method. I asked a variety of attendees at E3 two questions: one pertaining to general "hobbyist geek" knowledge and one of general "intellectual geek" knowledge. I wanted to see if we gamers are indeed the same as brainiacs, or if we're simply holding up a "We're #1!" foam finger of our own.

Valve on Half-Life 3 rumors: You're being trolled photo
Valve on Half-Life 3 rumors: You're being trolled
by Jim Sterling

Ever since obsessed fans pulled apart a video of Wheatley at the Spike Videogame Awards, rumors concerning Half-Life 3 have run rampant. While the community is expecting an imminent announcement, Valve writer Chet Faliszek has arrived to crush your dreams -- none of the rumors are true, and you're all being trolled.

"You are being trolled. There is no ARG," he said. "Wheatley’s speech was set in Portal 2 fiction -- that is all. There has been no directive from Gabe to leak anything. That is all false. I just want to say this so there is no confusion. This is the community trolling the community nothing more. While it is nice to see people excited about anything HL, I hate seeing people be trolled like this."

Fans reckon that Valve has been up to its "alternate reality game" shenanigans with fans, dropping subtle clues in the lead up to a Half-Life 3 reveal. It would appear, however, that the fans are doing what Victorians did when the War of the Worlds radio play was broadcast -- swearing they can smell the Martian smoke that doesn't exist and whipping themselves into hysteria.

Or ... is that what Valve wants us to think? WE MUST CONTINUE TO SPECULATE!
