Castlevania movie on hold due to the Writer's Guild strike photo

The writer's strike that is plaguing everything in the entertainment industry (excluding videogames) has now struck the Castlevania movie. Variety is reporting that Rogue Pictures had to halt production because the script needed additional work. Since they can't get anyone to work on the $40 million project, they have had to put the movie on hold indefinitely. The film's production was set to start in April in South Africa..

For some reason, I have always been oddly optimistic when it comes to videogame movies. I really don't want to pass judgment until I see it. It's hard not to just assume that the film will be fail anyway because of the track history of videogame movies. Not to mention that Paul Anderson has failed at videogame movies already.

Anyone sad that the Castlevania movies is is on hold until further notice? Or do you just not care at all?

I'm mixed on this one.. I really would love to see a Castlevania movie. Unfortunately I'm not really apt to believe this will be a GOOD Castlevania movie. I'm afraid I might feel like my childhood got raped once again.

How do you make a good Castlevania movie? The games are so ridiculously cheesy with their characters and dialogue in the first place.

Hollywood strike....sheeeesh. If you wanted more money, you shouldn't have signed the contract, bunch of selfish liars.

Anyway, so long as it doesn't turn out like Van Helsing or something.

Bullshit, I'll write it. I don't believe in guild's anyways. If they don't want me then let Iga write it. I'd just reshoot Rondo of Blood scene for scene, mixed in with a little bit of Bible Black. Maybe a little Beowulf inspired plot twist. Hot vampiress seduces and is impregnated by a Belmont. His heir has to go on to kill the new Dracula just to find out that it is *gasp* his brother.

Ugh, both Alien vs. Predator and Resident Evil were mediocre at best and horrendous at worst. You'd be better off boasting that the actors snort a half-pound of blow before every shoot than proudly exclaiming Anderson's directing "talent." I'd like to see a competent Castlevania movie come out of Hollywood.

As far as I'm concerned, it can stay on hold indefinitely.

@Noah,
You're right, they did sign a contract. And now that contract has run out. They are on strike so they can get a better, more fair contract this time around.

I don't think they had internet streaming, DVD sales and iTunes Stores back when the WGA signed their first contract.

I completely forgot this movie was being made since little bits of info would ever show up.

by the way, wasn't there a Devil May Cry movie confirmed YEARS ago?

Here's my script treatment, absolutely free of charge:

HERO walks right, whips some SKELETONS. HERO tries to jump onto moving floating platform, but collides mid-air with a MEDUSA HEAD and falls off camera to his doom. Repeat.

I'm a big fan of the Castlevania series, but all signs point to this movie eating it. I has changed hands more frequently than a joint on a school yard, everybody that is or has been involved with it has a history of trainwrecks... Lock this one inside of a castle and close it into an eclipse or some junk.

OTOH, I am still looking forward to the animated Castlevania feature written by Warren (Fucking) Ellis. No idea when it comes out though.

Each time someone mentions Writer's Guild Strike, I imagine a bunch of whiny MMO players not want to participate in a Guild raid due to unfair loot distribution. HAHAHAHAHA...well it was funny in my head. I just hope this strike wont make them go back to that screenplay with the goat beastiality.

"From the director of Resident Evil and Alien vs. Predator."

I don't know if this necessarily means anything good or bad. I'm not a picky, pompous, self absorbed ass hat when it comes to watching movies. I was entertained by Transformers and the first two Resident Evil films. I also loved Tokyo Drift.

FYI, Warren Ellis, who's mostly famous for writing comic books (Transmetropolitan, Planetary, Nextwave, Ultimate Galactus, Black Summer, Doktor Sleepless) and the not-graphic novel Crooked Little Vein, has written a script for a straight-to-DVD Castlevania animated feature.

Workblog here. Beware, contains mention of fucking goats.

I want the Castlevania movie to rock, but it probably won't. I thought Van Helsing was cool, but not great; Castlevania will probably, sadly, be even less so. If the movie takes itself seriously by making the mood dark, the characters bad-ass, and the dialogue serious, then Castlevania could be a breakthrough in video game movies... but, that probably won't happen.

I don't want a Castlevania movie at all. Castlevania's story has never been more than a basic, threadbare reason for the hero to explore a castle. The only castlevanias I LIKE anyway are the ones removed from the main series- the Metroid-style castlevanias staring people who aren't belmonts.

reserving judgement until I see a trailer, but my hopes aren't too high. And what's with the cheap Inner Bevel treatment on the title? They stopped using that on websites back in the mid 90's when everyone got over the novelty of photoshop filters.

Screw this stupid strike. They're holding the entire industry to ransom. And what the heck, is there some kind of clause that only American aka WGA writers can write? No one else is allowed to? What a load of bs. Mind you, could be the best thing ever considering how much this film would likely have sucked.

I don't think there anything stopping them from hiring writers outside the guild, after all i think most of the writing for like animated films is done by people outside the guild (though a few are done by the guild and it's one of the issues for the strike)... the question however, for new projects is can they find decent writers who are not part of the guild and for old projects can they find writers that can work with the previous writers' work? the problem for the industry is that most of the good writers are part of the guild, and the fact that a writer plays a major role in how good a film comes out; so it's generally not a good idea to hire just outside the guild

Writers join the guilds and unions and such for a reason, to make sure they get a good pay for their work, and they may also help in finding jobs for you... the downside to trying to work on your own is that you may not realize when your getting shafted and under payed for your work, as in you might make twice as much if you worked at the guilds prices... so for good writers, it's generally a very good idea to join some kind of guild

Of all the "Anderson" directors out there, this movie got stuck with the worst. Let's hope there's a director's strike, an actor's strike, a nuclear strike to W.S's mansion, before he soils the image of this beloved franchise.

I think Paul W.S. Anderson* is writing it, and the directing duties go to Sylvain White, director of Stomp The Yard. So you know that's a dynamite pair right there.

It's not gonna be any good, but since it's Castlevania, I'm curious about it. I've almost given a thought to catching Hitman since Roger Ebert gave it a 3 Star review (while also bashing games in said review).

Anyhoo, picture this with me....The ideal Castlevania movie production would have license to use music from the games. "Abandoned Castle" and "Garibaldi Temple" from Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, "Lost Paintings" and "The Tragic Prince" from Symphony of the Night, and of course a rendition of "Bloody Tears" in there. Now imagine exorbitant production values, for a big ole gothic castle set, a big bright moon and lots, lots of action set to the game music! How bad ass would that be?!

Don't care. It would need to be directed by somebody other than Paul W.S. Anderson (or Uwe Boll) for me to care slightly, and really I don't think Castlevania would work as a film. I mean, it could be good as a generic vampire movie, but there is no way they can contain the awesomeness that is Castlevania in a movie.

Someone told me about the script. This is the best thing to come out of the writers' strike. Trust me. None of the monsters, no whip, and a whole bunch of vampire fetish nonsense. Sounds to me like PwsA wanted to make himself an arbitrary vampire movie and is hoping (like his arbitrary zombie series "resident evil") that game fans will go see it.

Fool me three times, shame on you. Fool me four, shame on me.

That would be it.

I honestly don't see this as a plague either, I'm truely, honestly, dare I say praying that these greedy fucks aren't re-hired and scabs take over. Fresh-blood = good.

I haven't seen a good episode of anything on TV since like 1995, remakes and movies based on comic books and CGI animation is garbage. Truthfully I thought they had already been on strike since 1990.
So what they're plaguing remains to be a mystery.

This movie needs to be canceled outright. I love the Castlevania series, but there is not anything there worth making into a movie. Let video games stay as video games.
