Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Almost an 8-bit remake photo

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is looking really good. The new game has no ties to previous Castlevania games, but as producer Dave Cox told us, Lords of Shadow began life as a remake of the original 8-bit Castlevania:

The original concept was to remake the original classic 8-bit game in 3D. That was our original pitch, funny enough, with Simon Belmont and everything. We soon realized as we were doing the prototype that actually that’s probably not a good idea. It’s already been done before with Super Castlevania IV anyway. So we thought let’s do something really original, really new.

And that's exactly what we're getting now with Lords of Shadow. Dave says this is a "love letter" to Castlevania fans and we definitely got that sense from last night's presentation. Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to a hands-on at this year's E3.

I guess there's no point in remaking the best remake of all time.

Yay. More remakes.

You would think remaking the original in 3D is worse than something new in 3D, knowing this series' painful transition into it.

I'm excited about a new castlevania game, but at the same time, if it's a love letter then:

1. Why isn't Michiru Yamane scoring it?
2. Why doesn't it have Alucard or any ties to previous games?
3. WHERE IS CASTLEVANIAAAAA?

Not just Super Castlevania IV, but also Vampire Killer (MSX), Haunted Castle (arcade), Castlevania (Sharp X68000), and Castlevania Chronicles (PS1) are all remakes/retellings of the original Castlevania game. They all share the same name, Akumajou Dracula, in Japan; it is the name of the series over there, but there are no numbers or subtitles tossed into the names of those releases. They often feature widely different stages, but there are usually plenty of similarities to the first Castlevania and the story - Simon Belmont must defeat Dracula - is always near-identical. (I think he has to save his bride in Haunted Castle.) Furthermore, they toss in references to certain stages in later games, such as one underground area in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow that is near-identical to Castlevania's first stage (and features a remix of the "Vampire Killer" song).

So I find it amusing that now they think it's a bad idea to remake Castlevania, after doing it so many times in the past.

Side note: I cheated a bit in that list, seeing as Castlevania Chronicles is an update to the Castlevania on Sharp X68000 in order to give it a wider release and balance the difficulty.

@avalon51

"is a love letter to the classic Castlevania games we grew up with"

^^ That's not Symphony of the Night for a lot of us. This covers your first two points. Now assuming it gets the B-movie horror vibe in with it's bosses and enemies, and has a CASTLE in it, then I assume we can discount your last one.

Wait a minute, I swear I remember hearing that this game started its life as a completely different franchise, then Hideo Kojima got involved and suggested making it a Castlevania title.Did I dream that?

I wouldn't mind that, I can't beat the original Castlevania it's too hard. I always get to stage 3, get to the last door before the boss and get killed in the long hallway. This means I loose my whip upgrades and am fucked because you need the long whip to kill the dinosaur skull tower things.

BalloonFighter: That sounds similar to what I seem to remember hearing.

Perhaps it was always meant to be a Castlevania game, but didn't always carry the moniker. Or it was originally planned to be separate franchise, then they were like "hey this start would be cool as a remake of castlevania LOLZ" and then they were like "OSH*T guys this sux" and made a new game.

Or it's all a lie. The game isn't even being made.

Would a remake of a remake be a remake? Hmmm.
Anyway, I'm super excited for this!
In Kojima I trust.

I actually enjoyed Curse of Darkness, maybe because I didn't try to compare it to the 2D games in the franchise and viewed it as a separate product that happened to be Castlevania-themed. I'm keeping the same viewpoint regarding Lords of Shadow (especially since it didn't start out as a Castlevania game) and hopefully the game will be fun and well-crafted.

So wait wait wait.

Lords of Shadow not only gets back to the roots of Castelvania (that being an Japanese interpretation of a European legend--by all accounts pretty awesome until SotN), but it also gets back to the core tenants of the original trilogy's design philosophy? I know I held out hope with the voice cast and assets I've seen, but now that I'm getting the vibe LoS will be the first true Castlevania game since Super Castlevania IV.

Day one purchase for me.

@Mr. Opinionated: I'm sorry, UNTIL SotN? Yeah, those first three on da NES? SotN murders them in their sleep with its farts alone.

Super Castlevania IV was the last really good Castlevania game. Symphony of the Night tried to be Metroid, and it didn't work. The castle wasn't fun to explore, the leveling system was dire, the menus were bad, and it all felt really hollow.

I could also nitpick on the character designs, but everything boils down to taste, doesn't it?

So yeah, in my opinion, the Metroidvania genre just isn't fun. Or good. Or compelling. Or whatever word you want to use.

Well so far I like the voice acting, I don't know if I'll like until I see the freakin castle otherwise this should be called castlevania but just lords of shadow..

About time this concept is done justice.

I know castlevania fans are like ''OMG 2D SIDE SCROLLERS ARE AWESOME'' but that was in 1980. I tried symphony of the night on xbla after hearing how amazing it is...and it was LAME. Im sorry to be so brutally honest, but in 2010, it really doesn't cut it any more.

This looks like the game the series always had the potential to be, minus the lame japanese attempts at the dracula story, which never worked in the previous games.

A modern castlevania for a modern audience could be one of the best games this generation. Let's hope it turns out as good as it has looked so far.

come on..this sounds not good to me...and this symphony of the night game is also shit, for me it wasnt any good,i was shocked when i entered the castle and realised that there isnt a whip..and the LoS one...instead they should have done a oldschool 2d sidescrolling game with perfect drawn 2d sprites in HD..and of course all the classic music remixed..super castlevania4 was the best cv and will always be the best of the series.

They better impress, cause if they don't Kojima will rage out another MGS sequel.

I grew up with symphony of the night and the GBA castlevanias. It seems like storytelling and action are a priority with this game. While I appreciate a great story and crazy action, I hope they can bring the metroidvania feel to 3D without hurting the game.

Is this going to be a continuity reboot or not? Most game journalists/bloggers don't know seem to know the difference between a reboot and a new entry in an old franchise. It's really annoying.
