Castlevania: Lords of Shadow demo hits Xbox Live photo

A demo for Castlevania Lords of Shadow has landed on Xbox Live Marketplace for Gold subscribers today; the demo weighs in at a whopping 2 GB.

Lords of Shadow is Konami's "re-imagining" of the Castlevania series as a third-person, action-adventure title in the vein of titles like God of War, along with a hint of Shadow of the Colossus. The title was developed by MercurySteam, who had previously worked on Clive Barker's Jericho, along with Kojima Productions.

It's out this week for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. We'll have our review up as soon as Jim can finish the copy he's planning on buying tomorrow, when the game is released.

I guess Dtoid isn't cool enough to warrant a review copy?

Yeah, the demo was already on euro PSN (which is weirdly much much faster than US PSN for downloads). It's a great demo. Very fluid action, nice weight to actions, autotargeting on the knives so you can't waste them, and big enemies actually do damage. And there's sexy Patrick Stewart voice.

I saw that IGN.com gave Castlevania a 7/10 but then again they also gave Hydrophobia an 8/10 so I think I'll be waiting to hear Jim's impression before I make a decision.

Only consistant thing I've heard about the game is that it borrows too much from other games while doing practically nothing that makes identifiable as a Castlevania game.

In other words: Called it.

Just played the demo. Very nice but am I the only one who felt a little repulsed by how wet that horse looked? The damn thing looked like it had no skin.

@the silent protoganist, what game doesn't do that? Last time I checked every game is a game already made. Secondly the only not so good reviews given were because they were 2d castlevania fanboys and cannot accept a 3d one. Castlevania in 2d is still pretty much a hack and slash isn't it?

Downloaded the demo from the European PSN. Wasn't impressed with it. It's basically God of War, but with wolves. Maybe it's just because I'm not a 3D beat 'em up fan.

@lokhe + ShoguNage

I have a strange feeling this game is secretly about horses. Horses of the Russian and flayed variety.

@SayWord - Anyone can be too literal about something, reducing something clearly defined to something comparable to everything else.

In other words, you're the guy Mercury Stream is hoping to sell this game to, because for you anything could pass for Castlevania. They're not selling it to me, who sees a GoW/SotC/RE mash-up with "Castlevania" slapped on the box.

At least when Castlevania was borrowing from Metroid, it was still maintaining some degree of identity. It was kinda like having a Chevelle or A Perfect Circle album around when Tool was making anything new. It filled a needed niche that other bands weren't filling.

Games like Lords or Shadow are dime-a-dozen these days. In fact, they should have just called it "Lords of Shadow."

@ShogunNage

The gameplay is tight my friend, tight like the sinews if a freshly flayed horse. I enjoyed it (the gameplay, not the horse) quite a lot.

The game, so far, is an absorbing gothic effort from MercurySteam, Kojima Productions and, of course, Konami. Once you level up Belmont and learn new combat cross moves the game really begins to soar. This 3D Castlevania may be heavily influenced by other games, but it's never dull or distracting.
Also, the score is epic.

Patrick Stewart 10/10 GOTY.
But seriously, the demo surprised me in a good way. I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did.
