The Behemoth has been talking DLC for its highly popular XBLA game, Castle Crashers, explaining why there is no chainsaw in the game as expected, and promising that at least two new characters will become playable in the future:
Moving forward we can tell you that yes there will be a playable King and Necromancer. Yes, there is a chainsaw weapon, and no, they are not currently in the game.
As soon as we get more information from our friends over at Microsoft we’ll share that with you.
According to The Behemoth, this content was expected to be in the game thanks to various developers and media outlets being able to view Castle Crashers on Microsoft's internal network when it was being tested. Not knowing that what they were viewing was proposed DLC, they expected it to be in the game. Our own Reverend Anthony was quite upset at not being able to play as The King, while I was really hoping for some Necromancer action, so it looks like we'll both be getting what we want, with a chainsaw bonus to boot.
While the idea of playing as The Necromancer makes me happy, I do dislike the idea that this stuff existed long before launch and was being held back just to hawk it to us at a later date. That's one of the few things I despise about DLC lately. I don't know if I'd pay extra cash just for some new characters and a weapon, either. However, if The Behemoth wants to talk about extra campaigns and levels, then I am all ears.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Extra levels.. hell yeah!
I'll be holding out unless there are new campaigns released. Seems pretty stupid to tell people "yeah this was ready but we decided to keep hold of it so we could charge extra".
I'm pretty sure plenty of companies Develop DLC alongside a game, and here's the little secret as to why: It's to make sure that DLC will work with it in the first place.
Pretty big secret, huh?
It's a lot easier for a developer to produce a DLC pack alongside a game to make sure that things run smoothly and seamlessly with the game itself. It's not rocket science, it's not some black majick, and it's certainly not a shady business tactic in order to bleed the consumer dry, so quit trying to act like it is. You're making it sound like they left out a crucial part of the game itself, like the final boss battle or something. It's not like the Behemoth finished the game two weeks after it was announced and worked on nothing but DLC for three years in order to get all of your monies.
Take Downloadable content as it is: little bite-sized extras that you can pay for to get. Playing as the king or the necromancer has zero effect on the plot of the game.
Awwwww, that's soooo cute!
Characters as part of an expansion = YES!
Simple equation.
Umm, the point is that if they're developing and testing the DLC at the same time as the full game, THEY COULD'VE PUT IT IN THE GODDAMNED GAME TO BEGIN WITH.
Castle Crashers is a complete game that's stuffed with a crazy amount of content "out of the box". If the developers can make a little extra on the back end and extend the life of the game with additional content I'm happy to support them.
Of course they could have put it in the game, but so could every other developer that does this. Maybe the king and necromancer are part of a larger character pack, and some of the extra characters aren't finished. Maybe they are indeed working on a new quest, or an "OMFGWTFBBQ" mode where all the enemies have over 9000 HP. Who knows at this point?
As Mxy said, I feel like I got my money's worth with what this game has to offer, and I'm not about to look a gift horse in the mouth.
the game is great, but whenever i play with friends online the game disconnects at the same points every time (right near the end of a level), and as such i haven't played it for months, nor have i finished it.
