Castle Crashers DLC: Play as The King and The Necromancer! Also, chainsaws photo

The Behemoth has been talking DLC for its highly popular XBLA game, Castle Crashers, explaining why there is no chainsaw in the game as expected, and promising that at least two new characters will become playable in the future:

Moving forward we can tell you that yes there will be a playable King and Necromancer. Yes, there is a chainsaw weapon, and no, they are not currently in the game.

As soon as we get more information from our friends over at Microsoft we’ll share that with you.

According to The Behemoth, this content was expected to be in the game thanks to various developers and media outlets being able to view Castle Crashers on Microsoft's internal network when it was being tested. Not knowing that what they were viewing was proposed DLC, they expected it to be in the game. Our own Reverend Anthony was quite upset at not being able to play as The King, while I was really hoping for some Necromancer action, so it looks like we'll both be getting what we want, with a chainsaw bonus to boot.

While the idea of playing as The Necromancer makes me happy, I do dislike the idea that this stuff existed long before launch and was being held back just to hawk it to us at a later date. That's one of the few things I despise about DLC lately. I don't know if I'd pay extra cash just for some new characters and a weapon, either. However, if The Behemoth wants to talk about extra campaigns and levels, then I am all ears.

If only the characters as DLC, i won't buy.
Extra levels.. hell yeah!

Read this on someone's blog earlier and not including these characters is inexcusable considering they were tested at the same time as the game, which (as you totally pointed out in your review :P) include lots of reskins that share the same magic.

I'll be holding out unless there are new campaigns released. Seems pretty stupid to tell people "yeah this was ready but we decided to keep hold of it so we could charge extra".

If it's under 200 points I'll pick them up.

If the Necromancer's magic was spawning skeleton minions against enemies, that would be great.

@ Timmeh:

I'm pretty sure plenty of companies Develop DLC alongside a game, and here's the little secret as to why: It's to make sure that DLC will work with it in the first place.

Pretty big secret, huh?

It's a lot easier for a developer to produce a DLC pack alongside a game to make sure that things run smoothly and seamlessly with the game itself. It's not rocket science, it's not some black majick, and it's certainly not a shady business tactic in order to bleed the consumer dry, so quit trying to act like it is. You're making it sound like they left out a crucial part of the game itself, like the final boss battle or something. It's not like the Behemoth finished the game two weeks after it was announced and worked on nothing but DLC for three years in order to get all of your monies.

Take Downloadable content as it is: little bite-sized extras that you can pay for to get. Playing as the king or the necromancer has zero effect on the plot of the game.

Characters only = NO!
Characters as part of an expansion = YES!

Simple equation.

@ Vitamin Awesome

Umm, the point is that if they're developing and testing the DLC at the same time as the full game, THEY COULD'VE PUT IT IN THE GODDAMNED GAME TO BEGIN WITH.

Can't they just make Dad and Me for Xbox Live instead of more DLC?

I don't have a problem with them charging for these little extras, and I'll probably pick them up if the price is reasonable.

Castle Crashers is a complete game that's stuffed with a crazy amount of content "out of the box". If the developers can make a little extra on the back end and extend the life of the game with additional content I'm happy to support them.

Jim if you get a chance to speak to the developers, call DLC "A cocksucker move."

I don't really feel bad about the DLC thing. As long as this DLC isn't already buried in the code for the current game, and buying it will only "unlock" the DLC, then I don't mind. As long as the initial product is full and robust enough, they can make spades of DLC prior to release and I won't mind. Castle Crashers is definitely a full game, as is. Anything extra would just be amazing.

I feel like I got more than enough game for my $15, and I'll be happy to fork over a buck or two more for some DLC characters/weapons. Although new levels and campaigns would be epic.

Guys, I'm pretty sure they're not just going to offer two characters and a weapon as their only DLC. I imagine there'll be a new quest or game mode, or something that makes it more worthwhile.

@ gore_on_the_floor

Of course they could have put it in the game, but so could every other developer that does this. Maybe the king and necromancer are part of a larger character pack, and some of the extra characters aren't finished. Maybe they are indeed working on a new quest, or an "OMFGWTFBBQ" mode where all the enemies have over 9000 HP. Who knows at this point?

As Mxy said, I feel like I got my money's worth with what this game has to offer, and I'm not about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

I'm fine with things how they are. I too think it's bunk that the stuff was part of the finished product but Microsoft decided to just hang on to it to grab more money from us.

I think it's likely we'll probably get an additional animal orb or two out of the DLC as well... there's a few empty spots in the ark for them to go.

So, not only do you have to pay $15 for a game that you don't get to own, but the damn game isn't even complete? All the more reason for me to hate downloadable games and DLC.

have they fixed the network issues yet?

the game is great, but whenever i play with friends online the game disconnects at the same points every time (right near the end of a level), and as such i haven't played it for months, nor have i finished it.

Hey Smang, yup the network issues are fixed. My two cents here....I wish this included new levels, well, at least I hope there are plans to do that. I'm going to get this DLC regardless. After playing through this game over the weekend I came to really appreciate this team (Behemoth} as game makers. CC is a great game, I'm glad I waited and avoided the network issues, that would have tainted my opinion. But I enjoyed this game so much I want to support this team as much as possible in hopes of new levels (that would make my year) or a sequel .... sweet
