Castle Crashers crashing Xbox Live: The Behemoth working on fix

Castle Crashers crashing Xbox Live: The Behemoth working on fix photo
     Xbox Live Arcade

I'd love to be able to report that things are going swimmingly for Castle Crashers, but unfortunately I've had issues with the thing all day. So far I've managed one round of online co-op, and even then, it wasn't long before my character froze and I had to pull out. Since then, games won't connect, and even worse, my Xbox 360 has been (ironically) crashing when attempting to load an Xbox Live game.

Same goes for our very own Reverend Anthony, who has been having an awful time keeping a game going, and the Internet at large is also reporting problems. Apparently overseas connections have it the worst, too. It's safe to say that Castle Crashers has issues, son.

Not a very good start for a game that was sold on its online co-op potential. Fortunately, the game is still pretty fun on your own (although it makes archers unbearable) so you'll just have to muck through it is as best you can ... or find some real-life friends. Also, this is where you can make a snarky and cynical comment about the game costing 1200 MS Points. At least Braid's online co-op worked right.

[Update: The Behemoth is aware of the issue and claim to be fixing it, in their own cute way]

I just downloaded it, but I'm afraid to play it after hearing about this for fear of it destroying my system. I'll probably take my hard drive over to a friends tonight and try the offline co-op instead.

This makes me a little sad downloaded this morning and played the 1st level but no online I hope they get this fixed stat cause this game is the kind of game I think many have been waiting for( a good 4 player coop brawler). Do not want to see another Mr Driller Online that is not Online they may have fixed it I don't know cause no one is playing it online now.

The SSF2HD beta had some similar issues when it was first released. Here's hoping they get the freezing figured out.

Hmn. Glad I waited on this one then. Then again, I wasn't all that inclined to buy it. I didn't really dig Alien Homonid.

I don't have a 360 anymore, but a buddy of mine was swearing up and down about 360 connection errors when i was talking to him on the phone earlier - I bet this is what it was!

I will say that, if you're going to put "crash" in your title, you should make extra damn sure it doesn't cause problems. Bad news multiplies exponentially on the interweb when irony is attached.

I managed some good long co-op games this afternoon, but they all ended in us losing connection to the match. Still, it's doable. I just hope they get a patch out in the next few days.

@michiyoyoshiku
Then you're a fool. Start playing it offline so you can level up your characters, that way you won't get stuck in a match with a low-level knight.

Occasional problems. Works sometimes. Others it doesn't work at all. Most every game drops at some point.

Still a lonely guy can have a lot of fun playigng beat em up by himself.

Like just now. Waited to get four people together, got dropped.

Is this the type of thing that could hurt a review score?

The problem I’ve run into, is that the game won’t save my friggin progress. For some reason the 1st time I played it, Alien Homnid was unlocked as a playable character. So I started the game as him and leveled him up to 5. Then I stopped and came back to it an hour later and the game had erased that file and AH was no longer available.

So I started a new game with the green knight and leveled him up to 9, then stopped and sure enough, when I went to play the game again that progress was not saved as well. PATCH THIS NOW!!!!!

I hope they fix it soon. I managed to get a few games in earlier and a coupe just now before it bummed out and it is sooo much more fun playing with other people than going through solo.

It's pretty lame that a game that proudly displays "4 player adventure" on the title screen utterly and totally fails at online play. The game is excellent apart from a few oversights here and there (like getting stuck on the skill points screen if someone leaves).

I was going to play some local with a friend but he realised the football was on. foiled again!

@those who say it won't save

level progress is determined by what character you are playing as. So, double check that when to try to play the newest level you are using the char. you got there with.

I'm preety sure everyone knows that...

From what I heard, you have to play on the original 360 that you purchased the game on or else it's all screwy...

This is pretty serious - Castle Crashers had the potential to take away downloadable game of the year.

I wonder what possesses devs to release broken shit just to stick to a release date? Why wouldn't they just push it back a week or so and fix it? Surely the damaged reputation far outweighs some perceived advantage to releasing it on time?
TheStripe's Avatar
TheStripe at 08/27/2008 18:06
Maybe they didn't realize there was any shit broken until it hit the masses and tens of thousands of games hit the server over the course of a few hours. No one wants to release something broken. Perhaps you should write some software, bug check it, then release it to the masses and count the emails you get about broken shit before you point your finger.
Capn Birdseye's Avatar
Capn Birdseye at 08/27/2008 18:11
TheStripe - maybe, but you would think there would be some sort of QA in place to stop this from happening.

The tired old "Let's see you do it" defense is moronic, mate. I don't program games for a living, I work in finance. If I make a mistake, people don't sit around and blame the complexity of the work, they blame me.

It's called accountability. They are running a business, they should be held accountable for their mistakes, whatever the cause.

I hope this will be resolved soon, but I'll really be buying this game for the four player local capability. That's one thing I really miss from the past console generations: Multiplayer fun where you can retaliate for being killed or a dumb coop frak-up by hitting your friends with the controller. So far I could only hit my house-mate for being stupid in R6:V terrorist hunt, now there's going to be three people punching him in Castle Crashers.

I've noticed a bug that isn't a connection issue.

My Alien Hominid Character can't change weapons. He got the pitchfork, but after that that's all he can use, even when I'm in the weapon frog I can't go back to his default, or any other weapon for that matter.

"I wonder what possesses devs to release broken shit just to stick to a release date?"

Money.

"Why wouldn't they just push it back a week or so and fix it?"

Loss of money.

"Surely the damaged reputation far outweighs some perceived advantage to releasing it on time?"

Hardly...No one will remember this in a year (or less).

You have proof that it's broken code?

I see it more as a misallocation of server resources. The game works, just not the online portion. This is XBL. This is what we pay for.
