Carry Snake in your trousers: Metal Gear Solid confirmed for iPhone photo

Metal Gear Solid for the iPhone has been confirmed. It's called Metal Gear Solid Touch and will be based on the characters and story from Metal Gear Solid 4. There will be eight levels included in the release, with more levels to be added later on. Controls will be based on the touch screen (duh), and players will be able to unlock images and wallpapers with points earned from the game. Metal Gear Solid Touch will be out worldwide in the Spring of 2009.

Konami has also announced three other major franchises coming to the iPhone:

  • Frogger: It's Frogger.
  • Dance Dance Revolution S Lite: It's a game designed for people's feet, but now for your thumbs.
  • Silent Hill: The Escape: Port of a year-old cell phone game.

All three of these games will be out worldwide by the end of December. Some screens have been released on all the games, which you can check out in the gallery above. There's no word yet on pricing, but keep an eye out on Touch.Konami for that and other details on all of these games.

iPhone owners, are you excited for any of these games? Metal Gear Solid Touch looks really impressive. Hopefully it won't have any four-hour cut-scenes, as that would totally kill the unit's battery life.

The simplest answer is usually the correct one. Looks like the green font was somebody's mischievous idea to start flame wars.

This news would be great and all, but I don't own an iPhone and I'm not about to change service providers for any of these games.

Couldn't they just stick with, ya know, gaming consoles?

I find it funny :

A lot non PS3 users saw the "Rorschach-type test" and concluded it was MGS4 for the 360.

Wow, check out the silent hill game for cellphones. Doesn't get more shameful than that.

Unless its ported to the Wii, which is probably more funny than sad.

ouch, some of those silent hill screens were nasty, don't have an iphone and have no intention of ever getting one. dont know about you but why the fuck would I get a phone to play games on? yeah we all have silly free games on our phones but seriously I would never spend a penny on a game for a phone thats just lame.

hello konami anybody there? we use consoles and PCs for gaming get with it or join the rest of the lame developers who will be loosing money next yr.

because the power symbol is green on all appliances? Plus, people shouldn't want a water down MGS on the 360.

Like I said last night, disappointing.

Everyone is just making excuses for not playing this game. You don't have to change service providers just to play this game. You can always just pickup an iPod touch, it's a great music player AND it has Metal Gear Solid!

I mean the font in MGS conversation is green, so that makes sense, but yea the flame war thing is also most likely true.

Okami for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Confirmed.

Since when was Frogger a major Franchise? Flash Frogger is bigger than Frogger...

I think the green icon teaser was Konami's way of peeing on the 360. MGS4 could eventually make its way to the 360 [um..rrright], but at the expense of having to change disks once or twice due to size constraints.

I'm not understanding the iPhone choice. At least Squenix decided to port FF Agito to the PSP after realizing that its original plan to stick it on mobile phones wasn't such a great idea.

Memory hogging, download only titles on portable systems is not such a hot idea. Your average iPhone owner isn't going to want to sacrifice their precious hard drive space for vidya gahmes.

Oh, and Frogger is a major franchise. All those Frogger games on the DS sold buckets.

@Jonathan: Really? I never knew...

Anyways, yeah, watch MGS: Touch sell more than MGS4.

Just watch. Konami's "Hardcore" days are over.

How is a single web page with an image "so much marketin"? The gaming community took it and went wild with predictions.

Ugh, fuck ipods. We need more Zune games. I mean, comeon, Obama has Zune, I think that warrants some attention from developers like Konami, so they can start developing Zune games and directly market them to Obama, thus improving relations with the US. Yeah, I dunno wtf I'm talking about either.
Corak's Avatar - Comment posted on 12/17/2008 10:25

As others have said this will most likely work on the iPod Touch as well, not just the iPhone, so don't get your panties in a wad over switching carriers to play the game. I still can't imagine getting a phone or iPod just to play this game though.

Also infinite obscurity, Obama's reps put an end to his having a Zune thing, he doesn't, just in case you were being serious in your post. It depends on the price as to wether I'm picking this up or not, but more importantly how it PLAYS. I'll wait till I read about it and how it controlls before I think about getting it.

WOW, this is kinda funny. Konami knows how to screw with peoples minds. Its never wise to suspect the obvious when dealing with these equation things. Especially ones given by an elusive company like Konami and Kojima productions.

yup. if you had even played mgs4 you would know and see the ipod and macs in the game. if you see the documentary blue-ray you would know and see that mgs4 was made using a mac. Kojima and staff praise the apple products. i knew what it meant. also metal gear indica announced because pot is green too. so are leaves and grass. and boogers. and baby shit. and the 360.

First, let me just say ahahahahahaha, choke on that 360 fanboys! Now that that's out of the way, I don't see it as unreasonable that MGS4 be released on 360. There's already an install time between every Act in MGS4, disc swapping would actually take less time time per Act than the install does. I don't see why they couldn't just make it one disc per Act.
pd771's Avatar - Comment posted on 12/17/2008 12:40

@John Johnson

There are 3 reasons that's not feasible. One is the MGS4 was made to utilize the PS3 the best they could. With its unique hardware, it would take lots of time and money to port, time better spent on making a new cross platform MGS. Two is Microsoft charges extra for allowing developers to put games on 3 or more discs, and companies do not want to pay the fees. Third, Kojima loves PS3, and Apple.

Oh! So this is A Next Metal Gear? Even though I'm not in on it, I'm glad to see mobile gaming's finally starting to be taken seriously here. And all it took was our hipster youth's favorite brand name cranking something else out for the hell of it!

Holmes - A couple of hundreds of megs on a 16GB device is not exactly demanding. =). And i kinda agree at first that Download only games are not superhot, however, the apple DRM lets you have the game on unlimited devices, so if more people on your family/friends have an iphone/touch they don't have to pay again for the games...

Aw... Man..

I'm not a 360 fanboy or anything, I'd just really like to be able to see the resolution to the MGS plotline without shelling out $400 for a PS3.

I guess the iPod tie-in within MGS4 does make this kind of logical (not really, but, y'know) but still... Damn it.

How is this "whoring out the franchise" exactly?
They've made a new game for a hand held device rather then the same game on another home console.
