Carmack plays Wii but won't develop for it photo

Even though id co-founder John Carmac is currently playing Super Paper Mario with his son, he knows the technological boundary is far too vast to develop for the platform. In a recent interview with TomsGames, Carmac essentially closes the doors on the potential of Wii development by citing Tech 5’s brawn and the current market surrounding the Nintendo console.

Well, id Tech 5 will not work on the Wii…The Wii is one of those markets where Nintendo owns both the hardware and the software, but part of that is because they make such damn good products. So it's the toughest platform for third party developers. We don't have a software or content base ideally suited for it. So it doesn't really play to our strengths and we're pretty busy with other stuff right now…I don't think we'll be on the platform.
I think any Wii owner can easily see Carmack’s point. Rage certainly wouldn’t look or perform anywhere near well. Despite his comments, I would really like to see id attempt an original title on the Wii. I’m not calling for Wolfenstein (that’d be amazing) but it would be nice to see what id could have us waggling our controllers for.

He doesn't need to. Since he releases the source of all his engines after a while it's inevitable that someone will port each one over.

I played the WiiQuake a while ago, wasn't half bad, and still just as much fun as it always is :)

ID is awesome. I can see how he has a comfort zone and doesn't want to feel limited developing for Wii. The possibilities must feel endless, ya know?

I'm not too sure what to make of this. I kind of want people to stop playing it so safe, try and break down this "casual" feeling the Wii has.

I'm still excited for The Conduit. Isn't anyone else?

Definitely still excited for The Conduit over this way, Rosseh. And just get more so with each new vid clip and tidbit of info that IGN gets on it. The on the fly control change options looks great! :-)

I think Carmack could do amazing stuff with the limited Wii hardware, but I'm not surprised he couldn't be bothered. I set the Wii up a month ago, and it only got turned on tonight so the GF could play Wii Fit to check how much weight she'd lost.

There was some talk about Orcs&Elves for the Wii quite some time ago, after all they did a NDS version of the game. Which was a fun little Dungeon Crawler but certainly not great.

Reminds me that I have to check up on how Quake 2 DS by drunkencoders is shaping up...
Time... I need more time..

Good to know that at least one high-profile American game developer doesn't all-out hate the Wii.

sbshootme: I remember they said they would make a Wii Orcs & Elves if the DS version sold well, but apparently it didn't so...

I can't see all the soccer moms lining up play Rage or Doom.

id (needs) to make Wii graphics engine and toolset that pwns every other Wii engine out there, past/present/future, and call it...Wiid! Yes, pronounced weed. Hey, it's even in keeping with id tradition, one word names! Even if they don't develop for it, they need to make it and license it.
