Carmack: Game hardware reaching 'physical limits' photo

It seems certain that this generation will be one of the longest we've ever seen. Platform holders are happy with their products, and game developers don't want their budgets even more bloated. id's John Carmack has added his own two cents, claiming in addition that hardware is hitting a wall, in terms of how much it can actually do.

"We talk about these absurd things like how many teraflops of processing and memory that are going into our game machines," explains Carmack. "It’s great and there’s going to be at least another generation like that, although interestingly we are coasting towards some fundamental physical limits on things. We’ve already hit the megahertz wall and eventually there’s going to be a power density wall from which you won’t get more processing out there ...

"As developers, we would really like to see this generation stretch as long as possible. We’d like to see it be quite a few more years before the next gen console comes out, but I suspect one will end up shipping something earlier rather than later."

Maybe if this generation lasts long enough, people will stop using the stupid term "next gen" to describe everything.

I honestly hope there are no more consoles.

You know what? I'm cool with this; I've got all the hardware I need, and the tech is powerful enough that we can make pretty much any damn thing we want. I wouldn't mind this generation lasting ten years, or even longer. Hell, look at the PS2- can you believe they're still selling NEW ones?

I still hear Game employees telling their customers which is the best of the "next-gen" consoles. It's amusing..

Still, I'm really happy with all ofthe current consoles we have, and hope they go on for a good long time to come. There's no forseeable advantage that new hardware could bring right now, so we can all live happy, not having to spend lots of money on new consoles.

Now, how long do you think it will be until Activision starts using the lack of money you spend on a new console as an excuse for their price hike?

This also applies to PC's. I'm just wondering when the Brick Wall will appear and slaps Moore's Law into the ground.

I see Mr. Carmack is doing the difficult research needed to verify the burning question, "Can humans OD on cliche's alone"?

He's obviously just saying that because he's lazy, and doesn't want to have to use more next-gen megahertz.

I'm tired of new consoles. They have evolved enough.

There are always going to be emerging technologies that will push the limits of what was thought to be a barrier. To say that what we have is "enough" is just plain stupid, I see room for improvement, I see tons of room for innovation. While todays consoles are powerful enough to realize alot of ideas, they still aren't powerful enough to render hair! Where is my virtual barbershop? J/k, but with different methods of programming we may need machines designed to perform tasks to accommodate the days when polygonal engines go the wayside. We must realize that the sea of technology is not stagnant, and it would be very sad if it was. I will enjoy the technology of today and I anxiously await what the technology of tomorrow will bring. Without any major ability to upgrade the internal hardware, new consoles are a must. Heck, todays consoles are still stuck with disc based media.. which will become archaic in due time (Bluray included.) Eventually On-Demand content and physical media drives that don't require spinning motors and can read/write as well as transfer data at RAM speeds will be the norm.

@Holyetheline

Are you serious? Evolved enough? That doesn't even make sense if you think about it.

The 'Next Generation' of consoles will be more along the lines of 'Refinement' rather than massive leaps, like going from NES to SNES to Gamecube / MasterSystem to MegaDrive to Dreamcast.

It stands to reason that its better to have an XBox360 that doesnt blow up and has more memory and a faster cpu/gpu than have a totally new system again. Same goes for PS3. Wii should just have an HD version (with requisite memory and cpu upgradeds to make it possible).

From what I can tell, PS3 and Xbox (and Wii, I suppose), given the right minds and storytelling, are capable of giving me soo much gaming goodness, that, like others, I'm in no real rush to see a new console...

...But, as PCs have already proved, graphics can and will be better than the stuff our current consoles can generate. Is that important? Not especially. Nice though.

I agree, its not Next Gen if its happening now... It would be next Gen if Sony came out and said "Hey guys! We have this console, Playstation: Evolved. Yeah the model is finished right now but we're not sending this out til 2016. So enjoy the PS3 for 7 more years."

What I do believe they should do is what Microsoft is doing to their Xbox. Update the software with new models that are coming out. I mean yeah the older systems wouldn't handle it well, but they're going to RROD anyways and that means they will be buying a 2nd or 7th system. So eventually it will just replace itself.

Clearly a man that builds spacecraft, invented many of the techniques used today in computer graphics and builds a new engine with new technological advancements for every game he makes, is one lazy mother-foer.

These newbies probably don't even know what Mr. Carmack has done. However, I clearly remember the days when Quake was the best thing in the world on my 90mhz amd-k6 w/ 16mb of ram or whatever it was... don't forget the $90 33.6kbps modem that allowed me to actually play multiplayer...

Ahh the good ole days of 400 ping with no client-side prediction, and it strangely was the best gaming I've ever had in my life.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what 5-7 years of R&D on the playstation 3 will showcase. when you look at the last generation of the playstation 1, and ps2, you see these beautiful games, absolutely brimming with really clever programming, especially when you compare it with the fodder that lines every console's launch titles. who'd of thought MGS would've been possible on a PSX when they first saw jumping flash or cyberia ? no one.

Developers should focus on more stylized graphics than on more realistic graphics. I feel that there's far too much emphasis on making things look realistic. I'd like to see more games with interesting graphical styles, namely Jet Grid/Set Radio and the like.

Yah know what? I still play my "old gen" PS2. I think game developers have to get over the whole photo-realistic graphics thing and get on with making games with solid gameplay and interesting stories.

That's right. Just look at God of War. It took five years in the PS3's lifecycle before it appeared.

The longer the better. Not having to worry about dropping 400$+ on a new system couple years is a nice thought.
