Carcassonne on XBLA this Wednesday photo

Carcassonne is the second board game to be turned into an Xbox Live Arcade title. As always, it'll be available this Wednesday for, you guessed it, 800 Microsoft Points. If you're one of those guys that enjoys Carcassonne in real life, you'll be pleased to know that its virtual counterpart will include the "Rivers II" expansion set and both online and offline multiplayer. For everyone else: this game supports the Live Vision camera, so I think you know what to expect.

More specifically, Carcassonne features the following:

•Special AI settings to challenge any skill level
Challenge your friends – Up to five players can play over Xbox LIVE or up to four players can play on the same Xbox 360
Interact with new and old friends alike over Xbox LIVE while you play "Carcassonne" with the Xbox LIVE Vision camera
Helpful step-by-step tutorial to teach you the game in minutes
Skill-based matchmaking for ranked games
The complete "Carcassonne" includes 72 tiles and all rule sets
"Carcassonne" includes the "Rivers II" expansion set - 12 additional tiles
Earn up to 200 Gamerscore and 12 Achievements

I was never able to get into Catan due to the fact that I have the attention span of a -- oh sh*t, a giant wasp just landed on my desk -- wait a second, what was I saying again? Ah yes, my attention span problem. If I'm lucky, I might be able to force myself to get through the tutorials and learn how to play Carcassonne.

How about you guys? Are you into this kind of game, or would you rather have something else come out this week?

Never played this particular board game...but it looks fun. I was going to buy Catan this week as well. Too bad they don't have a two pack or something :)

I remember the good ole days of boardgaming though (Axis & Allies, HeroQuest, Dark Tower, Talisman)... here's to hoping they bring many more of these to XBLA.

I was going to pick up Catan but living with my fiance means that local multiplayer greatly increases my chances of being able to play the vidja games so it seems that Carcassone wins this round.

Carcassonne is much faster paced and simpler to learn than Catan. I'll buy this.

Never played this. but I thought Catan was fun

Just one Question. Do I need to interact with my opponents in order to win?

If so I think I'll pass, nothing sucked more in Catan than walking into a game and playing three guys who immediately put a bullseye on your back. DO NOT WANT!

I played Carcassone once (the regular board game), and it's a pretty fun strategy game. The interaction with other players is _mostly_ passive, though it is possible to fight with them occasionally. It's kind of like a dynamic game of Risk, except you are spending most of your time building the map to your advantage instead of fighting.

Love it! It's going to be better than Catan online at least. Dealing with some people online is a real pain.

Carc is fairly non-interactive compared to Catan. You're not actively bidding or trading, and each turn involves one player exclusively (there aren't "phases" that involve the opponents in the turn).

You're strategizing, but there's not as much you can do to manipulate the other player into making bad choices, unlike Catan. However, there are definitely clever ways to 'break' other players development efforts in your favor.

That said, there's a *huge* luck factor in Carcassonne, unlike Catan where the dice only factor into production. The luck here factors into the entire nature of your turn & what you can do.

It's much much lighter than Catan, and I think it'll be more popular. And yeah, here's hoping for Puerto Rico, which will be the polar opposite and rather difficult for new players, although more engaging for everyone who plays.
