By now you should already have a good idea of what to expect from the upcoming Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network title Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. It's Super Street Fighter II Turbo in glorious high-definition, with completely reworked art designed by Udon Entertainment.
At CAPTVIATE, I had a chance to sit down and go head-to-head with the game's producer, Rey Jimenez, and there were no surprises. The game is gorgeous as expected, and as it uses the game's original code, so plays and feels just like you remember it. All of the redrawn stages were present, and all of the game's characters were selectable, although we were limited to choosing four -- Ken, Ryu, Akuma, and Dee Jay.
So why couldn't we select the other 13 characters? Quite simply, they're not done yet. As Jimenez pointed out to us, "They're playable, but not pretty." This was confirmed by another journalist who told me he snuck a peek, and said choosing Zangief mirrored Michael Jackson's "Black and White" video where the game morphed between the classic art and the new art on the fly.
I'm sure we had all hoped the game would have been done by now (it seems like it was announced ages ago), but the team is making progress. Jimenez tells me that they're shooting for an August release; a beta of the game featuring a playable Ken and Ryu will ship with the XBLA version of Capcom's Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3.
Can't WAIT to play this.
This is just asking to be shooped:
Agreed. The combination of Tatsunoko vs Capcom and HD Remix has really overshadowed the excitement I once had for SF4.
@Trevor McGee
As far as I know they *are* updating the animations but they also have the option of playing it with the old animation (with classic or updated graphics) for purists.
I remember reading it in an interview or one of David Sirlin's blog posts but I can't find it now.
Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike is easily the best Street Fighter to date and from the looks of things, we'll have to wait til SF5 until there's another serious contender.
So go ahead, blow your money on an old fighter with updated graphics. Honestly, this may SOUND appealing, but how often are you really going to play it? I mean, I like playing old games occasionally, but if I ever bust out Tekken 3 or Soul Blade, it's only for the novelty and the fun's over in an hour.
Speak for yourself. This game is on my MUST BUY list. I've already invested in an arcade stick when i bought VF5. I'll be getting more play time out of it than I would many games which I've spent $60 on. 1 word, online.
Also, it's not just the same game w/ new graphics. If you'd been paying attention to it's development you'd know the gameplay mechanics have been tweaked heavily. & the fact that it's DL means future revisions can be patched onto it. Unlike the old days where the arcades would be the only place to play the new revisions.
Between Street Fighter 4, SSF2T HD Remix, Resident Evil 5, Bionic Commando, Bionic Commando Rearmed, 1942: Joint Strike, & Commando 3; Capcom's going to hold a nice chunk of my game library this year.
