Captian Obvious: Dragon Quest IV is big in Japan photo

Japan has always had mad love for their Doragon Kuesuto games, so it should be no surprise to anyone that the newly released DS remake of the 1990 Famicom title has sold out in some locations, and 597,000 copies have been sold this past week. I bet Square Enix is excited, as this is only the first of several remakes on the way.

Wired's Game|Life makes an excellent point about the likelihood of Square Enix titles coming to the Wii's Virtual Console. With well over half a million units sold of a DS remake in one week, why bother with the Virtual Console? They can just retool the oldies and make a lot more money.

Hit the jump to see the top ten list of Japanese game sales for last week.

Why should they bother with the Virtual Console? Because some people would rather play the version with the nicer-looking 2D sprites than the version with the blocky N64-quality 3D polygons. If it doesn't happen this year, I'd hope that they eventually decide to toss them up on the service, even if it's not for a few more years.

I would buy all square games released on the VC.

Except for the original FFI and FFII.

I would KILL for FFVI and Chrono Trigger on the VC.

KILL.

Any takers? Nintendo? Square?

Captain Obvious: You misspelled Captain.

Who knew Japanese folks were so into soccer? OK, probably everyone but me, but still.

Speaking Chrono Trigger...I wonder why releasing Radical Dreamers to VC hasn't been thought of yet. Would be nice to get that whole Chrono Cross thing all sorted out (Not that confusing of a game but wayyyyyy to much plot twist and story in it).

But to get back on topic...dragon quest rules?
