Captain Obvious: World at War Wii will not have online co-op photo

In a sudden turn of events that have shocked the games industry, Treyarch has confirmed that Call of Duty: World at War for the Wii will not have an online cooperative mode. Recently, WiiHD had a chance to speak with a Treyarch representative about the matter. The reason for the exclusion of the larger mode is massively surprising. Apparently, the Wii cannot sustain the World at War engine with that many people on-screen at the same time. This is what Treyarch had to officially say:

We are proud to bring what we believe will be the best-looking Wii game this fall to the community, but that comes with technical trade-offs. The difference between competitive MP and co-op is non-trivial. Think of a size of an MP level, then compare that to an SP level. Then consider all the AI code, level scripting, and endless other content in a SP / co-op environment that is just too much for the Wii to sustain with our engine.
This is incredibly unfortunate news that I’m sure most Wii owners were not aware of. The Wii, and its vast technological prowess, cannot handle online cooperative play. At the very least, World at War owners won’t have to worry about collecting friend codes anymore.

Not exactly as if I was planning on the Wii version anyway.

Didn't a couple games like Halo 2, Doom 3 and Chaos Theory on the original Xbox have online Co-op? If so, then damn, the Wii is even weaker than the 2001 Xbox. That would be just sad.

The Wii has online?

I don't know why people are complaining about the lack of co-op for... the wii version was always going to be gimped.

Teyarch should build a from the ground up engine for the Wii ersion, not try to shoehorn the Call of Duty 4 engine onto it.

Wii is the market leader after all.

Im calling bs on this since there are a few games on the wii with online co-op.

it will have online 1 on 1 wont it? if so I think the lack of a co-op mode probably has somthing to do with the small matter of no voice chat, I mean to co-operate surely you would need to be able to speak with your partner?

Killatia:

The Wii has 0 games that feature online co-op. This is Treyarchs official statement, why would it be "bs"?

Medal of Honor Heroes 2 Wii and it's 32 player friend-codeless online mode called Treyarch, they think you're not trying hard enough.

[random negative nintendo comment because I'm upset that I sat in a line for 18 hours for a system that's only purpose is too look good stationed between my PS3 and 360]

That's such bullshit. They're just lazy cunts.

Not that I was going to buy this version anyway, but it's definitely possible, regardless of what they say.

Unless you guys are actual developers working on this version of the game, your opinion that they are 'lazy cunts' is completely invalid.

What part of 'too much for the wii to sustain with our engine' do you not understand? They could gimp it more, but wouldnt you rather have a good single player game, than an average co-op game you can get bored with with your friends?

@Mxyzptlk - thats kill each other multiplayer, not co-op. Its a heck of a lot easier to implement.

@lubczyk - I dont think any of those games had online co-op. I agree that an engine built from the ground up would be better... but i doubt Activision would let them do it, it would take a lot longer.

Would you even really want to play online co-op without voice chat? Would you really?

It looks average as fuck already, it doesn't need to be on the Wii, or gimped at all to accomplish that. And I've never trusted a single thing that has come from anyone at Activision.

If they say it can't happen, it sure as hell can.

Why all the hate for my waggle wonder. You know what they should port to the Wii? EVE online. That's all I can think about with all the ads on this site.

Seriously though everyone who owns the Wii is just waiting for Wii Sports Resort so they can do 1 to 1 foam sword battles yes?

Sharpless at 08/09/2008 11:24
The only people who will buy the Wii version are the people who only own a Wii. And if you only own a Wii, chances are that you won't really care about this.

Also, Foe, try not to act so butthurt.

I agree with sharpless. If you have another system to get this game on, you shouldn't be buying shooters for the wii.

@ ajaxender: And I'd be willing to bet they could do it if they really wanted to. There's plenty of ways around it. There's an offline 2 player co-op mode, so the idea that they can't make that work online smells of the same bullshit EA shoveled out when they released a lazy PS2 port for Rock Band. As a developer, Treyarch has majorly gone downhill in the last few years.

@Foe
I'm sorry, but you've got to be butthurt. You do understand the purpose of ads, right? This is an independent gaming blog, i.e. not funded by some big corporation. Bills have to get paid somehow. And then "my waggle wonder"? Don't be a fanboy, man. What's Nintendo ever done for you? The Wii, like the 360 and PS3, has its faults. Expect people to point them out. There's nothing wrong with that.

@Quest
If you want to lodge a legitimate complaint against Destructoid, be my guest. And I'd defend you too, if someone took shots at you for something you didn't do wrong. And I also wouldn't cast too many stones, friend, as you seem to spend equally as much time insulting "your little fav website." If we're spending so much of our time on a site that we clearly don't like, maybe it's time we reassessed our priorities in life, don'tcha think, hun? Mmkay? Mmkay.

Don't read everything you read on the internet people.

The author of this article apparently didn't do his research before spouting off like he did. The supposed "statement" from Treyarch was actually an excerpt from an email response by Treyarchs community manager JD to a fans letter regarding the Wii only supporting 2 player co-op instead of four.

Read the entire letter here:

Just because some shmo on Destructoid said it, doesn't make it true.
