Captain Obvious: WiiSports burns fewer calories than real sports photo

In a tragic turn of events, the American Council on Exercise released the results of a 2008 study, which revealed that WiiSports burns fewer calories than actually playing the real sport equivalent. MTVMultiplayer found the results via the PDF that was released yesterday. The meat of the findings was in this passage:

Compared to golfing at a driving range (3.9 calories per minute), playing Wii Golf burned 0.8 calories less per minute. Actual bowling burns nearly twice as much (7.2 calories per minute) as Wii Bowling, while baseball burns 7.3 calories per minute and Wii Baseball burns 2.8 calories per minute less. Similarly, Wii Tennis burns 2.8 calories per minute less than the actual game (8.1 calories per minute). Finally, Wii Boxing burns about 3.0 calories per minute less than conventional sparring at 10.2 calories per minute.
Captain Obvious was so busy with the nature of these findings, that he forgot how to fly and ate some pavement. Captain Obvious will be fine after his accident, but you may not be if you consider WiiSports a part of your exercise regimen. I have to say, as a gym addict, nothing can possibly replace what free weights, elliptical machines, or treadmills can do for your body in terms of calorie burning. A point of interest from the study reveals that they made participants in the WiiSports part actively play the game. That means, no sitting on the couch and waggling.

I should do a study on the amount of burned calories when playing Alone in the Dark. I know I raised my fist 15000 times and jumped up and down a lot, that should count for something.

Whatever happened to DDR for exercise? Did everyone forget that? I guarantee DDR burns way more calories than any wiifit activity.

Next someone will confirm that Wii Fit isn't nearly as effective as using a gym or real exercise.

@brainderailment: I think WiiSports, WiiFit and DDR are all intended to be used more as "gateway drugs". My fiancee made me buy her DDR, used it for about three weeks, and now she's joined the YMCA and is doing actual cardio three days a week.

$50 well spent, IMO.

Good god, this was so obvious I'm surprised it even warranted posting in a Captain Obvious article.

Also, plyometric exercises >>>>> weight lifting/ellipticals/etc. for calorie burning.

Captain Obvious needs to speak to all the fanboys who claimed the Wii was going to start a fitness craze because of how much weight you could lose with it. Despite the fact that you can get a far more productive workout for free by simply doing some situps and pushups. As for those claiming that the balance board is good because of the yoga stuff, you could buy a work out DVD for a fraction of the price.

Balance board is better for you than just the yoga stuff, but it still doesn't beat doing traditional workouts.

I like how when it's something positive to gaming (gaming helps you lose weight) they go all the way to prove it's wrong and when they say something negative (zomg killing simulators) they go all the way to prove it's right.
