Captain Obvious: Study of studies says video games don't cause violence photo

Considering violent behavior has been around since the day we crawled out of the primordial goo, the notion that video games caused or led to an increase in violent behavior often made those of us with a drop of common sense roll our eyes at the silly thought. Now, thanks to science, it appears as if studies on violence and video games are flawed. Meaning, Jackie T is the attention whore we always thought he was ... well, according to this one evil scientist at least. From GamePolitics:

“Results from the current meta-analysis found that there were about 25 recent studies on violent video game effects, with conflicting results. Overall results of the study found that although violent videogames appear to increase people’s aggressive thoughts thety do not appear to increase aggressive behavior.”

In other words, no sh*t. The final nail in J.T.'s coffin:

“Also it was found that studies that employed less standardized measures of aggression produced higher effects than better standardized measures of aggression.  In other words, better measures of aggression are associated with lower effects."

... “there is little evidence from the current body of literature that playing violent videogames is either causally or correlationally associated with increases in aggressive behavior.”

“Despite the relatively young and sparse nature of the research on violent video game effects, some researchers have claimed that the evidence is conclusive. Yet a close read of the literature reveals that many of the studies used to support this link provide only questionable or inconsistent evidence.”

No, video games cause lots of violence. I'm personally responsible for killing over 250,000 zombies in Willamette, several thousand Locusts, countless Goombas, several dozen hookers, hell, I've even killed my best friend several dozen times over because of video games.

It's tragic times we live in and we have people like JT to thank for leading the crusade against video game violence, legalizing baby eating, getting Auschwitz re-opened as a day care center for underprivileged youths, and de-criminalizing forced anal sex with southern US lawyers. Thank you sir.

"Also examined was a phenomenon called 'publication bias' which means that scientific journals are more likely to publish studies that support a particular hypothesis than those that reject it." <snip> "Publication bias appeared to be a significant issue for studies of aggressive behavior"

Man, if the only stuff we see every says "there's no Causality, but there's a minimal chance of relation", imagine what all the unpublished results must be. I want to see a 'study' that shows playing excessively violent video games leads to a less violent behavior. Personally, I wouldn't be terribly surprised. There's times that I would've stabbed someone in the eye in real live, but instead slaughtered hoards of aliens/terrorists/hookers/civilians/etc. I know it's about as much of a stretch as JTs claims, but it'd still be nice to see the complete opposite of JT.

Of course videogames don't cause violence, they cause premarital sex.

Studies show that conducting studies will lead to more studies of a moronic, obvious nature.

Yecch.

@ Teamjesus:

He'll go with the studies that support his beliefs and ignore this one, the same as he's always done. There's been previous studies in the past that came to this same conclusion, and he pretended those didn't exist either.

Now the next step is to get these studies out to the general public, Congress, and guys like Jack Thompson so we can end the "Video-games create murderers" bullshit.

Obviously science is conspiring with Take Two and the Florida Bar Association against Jacko.

Violent video games increase hot pocket consumption, and also tend to bring out the tendency to piss into nearby empty bottles so you don't have to leave the screen when you might get PK'ed.

Technically they can. People fight over it, get frustrated by it, etc. Heck, just look at how people tend to argue about it over the internet. Some tease others over personal preferences too. It's not something unique to videogamers mind (not even ALL videogamers), but all said and done, there you go.

Hahah, yeah well we had our laughs, but heres the horrible truth.

The government supports ass wipes as Jackie and non actual issues (such as illegal immigrant a la Simpsons) because they need to cover HUGE problems we have at hand . Such as..

Oil going seriously scarce, Bush trying to invade Iran for Oil and making bullshit excuses on the run, poverty, unemployment drug sales going sky high in the already lost drug on wars the probably interesting issue the sun itself could kill us in ten years if UV and Global warming continues it's merry way. And Bush and Exxon says "we need to consume oil" so we keep our wallets ample and happy. just to mention some.

But hey kids! whats America #1 problem right now? thats right! videogames!

Peace.

In case you are wondering what they are going to do about this.

1.-they will get another "study" by Dr. Nick Riviera proving "games are bad MMkay?"

2.-They will get public figures (such as the pope) to say "games are bad MMkay?"

3.-They will get money from impresionable and/or religious parents by raising funds for their "cause"

4.Some sleazy game industry PR guys will provide money and fire for the logs to burn on, since controversy equals more (emo teen) sales! (Im looking right at you Rockstar PR you think we havent noticed?)

Repeat, cleanse, rinse until some other media type capable of warping our youth fragile little minds shows (Cerebral cinema!) and the process starts all over again.

And so on and so on.

The Late Pope John Paul II has actually said in the past that pokemon was OK. This was during the big craze when everyone was claiming pokemon to be a tool of evil and that it promoted devil worshiping and all kinds of other religious threats. In the end he ruled that pokemon was just a harmless children's fad. So it wouldn't suprise me if the Pope were to get caught up in the similar argument over videogames again.
