With all this talk of an expected Microsoft Xbox 360 price drop, some might have been waiting to hear something from their competition. Of course, I don't think that any right-minded gamer would expect Nintendo to drop Wii prices, but maybe Sony?
Of course not! According to SmartMoney, Sony's Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda isn't having it.
"Our strategy is not to sell more quantity for PS3 but to concentrate on profitability," Oneda told investors at a Nomura Asia Equity forum in Singapore.
"Our plan is not to reduce the price."
And why should they? If you ask me, Sony is on the way up... finally. Destructoid community blogger superhobo has an interesting take:
Fair f*cks to them! They are absolutely right in taking this position, they have taken far too much of a loss already this generation, and I think that the apparent decision to focus on the more "hardcore" gamers that they already have will stand to them in the long run. While I can understand where Microsoft is coming from, and if they feel that they can still make a profit with the upcoming reduced price then fair play to them, I can't help but feel that Microsoft is grasping for straws here. This is all the more apparent when we consider the apparently upcoming Avatars and Motion Controller for 360. I mean come on MS, you're not going to beat Wii at it's own game: for once take a que from Sony and stick to what you do best.
If you ask me, I think that if Sony sticks to their guns and has a good E3, they'll be doing fine by this holiday season. What do you think?

i have both so i know what i'm talking about ... before some dumbass call me a fanboy
YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US.
Seriously though, I see no need for them to drop the price. Besides losing money on a machine every time they sell it, they'd have to explain to all the BD player manufacturers why they're undercutting them so bad with the PS3. The PS3, afterall, is one of the most capable BD players on the market.
Also, troll.
Also Also, newer 360s are better
Also Also Also, Oslo.
So it's only obvious, that Sony denies any rumors about price drops. Just like Microsoft is still denying the 360 price drop although there is proof all over the internet.
The pro might not actually be getting a formal price drop. The K-mart, Target and Gamestop ads are all really specific, with the former to specifying "20GB" and Gamestop going all the way by noting the SKU number.
I think it's more a confirmation of the rumored 60GB Pro, with the older systems priced to move. Whether or not the $299 tag sticks is another story.
And lastly if you applaud Sony's strategy then you are basically applauding a company happy ending in third place and that will NEVER bring back all the exclusives and developers they lost.
I honestly want Sony to do better cause I want Microsoft to do worst, they have too many good games on awful hardware but Sony needs to do something about the price.
In what world is this a fanboy statement?
Sony still has no strategy, no system sellers (MGS4 DOESN'T count), and no cool factor for those who don't want to shoot things in first person. Sony fanboys are wetting their pants for features that were standard for YEARS, like rumble, custom soundtracks, and XMB. Price is the least of Sony's problems.
Signed,
A PS3 owner whose system collects dust.
they really shot themselves in the foot with the ps3...caught between a rock and a hard place:
- they still don't have the software lineup or online service (yet) to justify the $100 price gap on the 360.
- most consumers can't see enough difference between Blu-ray and DVD to justify the switch -- which will be costly, unless you already have a 1080p projector or TV of at least 40'.
- the ps2, inexplicably, continues to sell. o_O
- and finally, it hasn't helped that Sony has appeared absolutely clueless and even incompetant in regards to strategy: initially wanted how much for it? changed SKU's how many times? said we didn't need 'rumble' in our controllers? said we'd "work longer to buy one" ??
the only thing Sony can do is stay the course, push the Blu-ray agenda hard, hope the AAA titles come and pray that 'Home' is a hit.
I'm sure Halo 3 sold a lot of 360's. I'm sure GTAIV moved a lot of PS3's, probably moreso than 360's. But MGS4 definitely didn't have that kind of buzz around it.
Hell, it wasn't even marketed as the last go for Kojima and Solid (Old) Snake. That would have given it a boost among those who played the earlier games, but not the more recent ones.
Sony needs to do three things by the end of the fiscal year, IMO. More exclusive, quality titles need to come out. Home needs to either be released or dropped; the last thing they need is to have the Duke Nukem Forever of apps in their name. And finally, drop game prices; dropping game prices to $50 will create more appeal to the system and increase attachment rate.
until then, let the fights for our money reign!
They are already selling the console at a pretty big loss, it would be pretty stupid of them to drop the price now. I don't see how agreeing with their decision automatically makes someone a "fanboy".
While M$ may be copying avatars and motion controls. Let's not forget the rumo
anyways lets not forget the rumoured motion remote controller for the PS3 so that they are actually trying to appeal the to casual/hardcore gamer.
1)Nobody asked for blueray and it was not necessary.
2)Nobody wanted a super computer, I much rather have a powerhouse graphics card and a good enough processor if it keeps the prices down
If you switch blueray for dvd drive or at least the option for a dvd based SKU ( lets face it games look as good or better on the 360 on DVDs ) and if they didn't waste so much on using that stupid cell processor instead of one of the many other proven technologies available at the time, they could have been at the $299 price range by now with little to no financial loss on each console.
Nobody asked for Blu-Ray? First of all i have been a long time fanboy of Sony but I also own a 360 which I use just as frequently. Blu-Ray not only adds the ability to play Hi-Def movies but it also makes the media to put games on larger. If you have models without Blu-Ray, how can you put games on that format? The Quality difference is also more about the developer. Of the exclusive games for each system that I seen the PS3 has sharper graphics, better tectures and better lighting and shadow.
Now, as to the hardware, a graphics card is great, but it doesn't determine alone how good your graphics can be. There are so many processor based operations that are required for this generations games to look and feel good. Physics, Lighting, Shadow, Water, AI-Routines, Partical Effects (for those that dont know that means explosions, fire, mist etc.) are all controlled by the processor. With the PS3's ability to run so many threads at once developers can put much more noticable deatail in the games. When comparing games that are on both systems though they tend to look the same because the 360 just cant handle the processor requirements so the games get dumbed down.
Anyway, I'm not trying to say which is better or worse (Although I prefer the PS3, the 360 has a tendancy to lag, freeze, and crash) and for the amount of hardware that is in the PS3 I dont see a way Sony could drop the price. Plus: looking forward to Resistance 2 and White Knight!
I see $399 for the PS3 as a failry reasonable price and if it's too much for you dont buy it, no one makes you buy anything. Value IS in the eye of the beer holder....
Me = happy camper.
On a side note:
Sony, why couldn't you have stuck with dvd goddamnit. If you did, I would be happily playing MGS4, while swapping disks every 10 or so hours.
Also, don't try to hail Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet as your flagship titles. I can get better shooters and better platformers on my 360 and Wii.
Give me JRPGs, 3rd person action games(such as God of War, SOTC, etc.), fighting games and every other genre not covered by every other system(I view the Wii and 360 as having a very narrow scope of games). Sony should realize that fans of these genres are a very large and unsatisfied market.
until the economy gets better, you won't ever see consoles move like the PS2 did in the 90's.
PS2 in the 90's ..... you don't know what your talking about O o
