Captain Obvious: Project H.A.M.M.E.R officially cancelled photo

I don't care what anyone else says, but I was actually looking forward to Project H.A.M.M.E.R quite a bit. It looked like brainless, dumb, hamfisted violence and that's the kind of thing I sometimes want in a videogame. Sadly, however, it's not what Nintendo wants in its videogames anymore, and in the wake of such exciting titles as Let's Act Like Twats at the Carnival and Tenuous Mario Inclusion 176, it seems there just isn't room for one man and his hammer.

Famitsu has reported that there will be no mallet-based carnage for those of us who had the game on our radars, and have thrown it on the trashpile, which shouldn't be a surprise given the rumors and the delays. With games like Disaster: Day of Crisis and Sadness looking increasingly like vaporware with each passing, silent day, I wonder now if the Wii will ever seriously provide something completely fresh and original like Nintendo once promised. I gave up hope for the system as a serious games platform long ago, but it still gets me in my soul when I hear about the premature death of a potentially decent title

I don't know if a game that has my bad ass cyborg killing other bad ass cyborgs is something I'd consider fresh and original, waggle control or not. But I still was interested in checking this out. Oh well.

All I have to say is fuck that noise. More and more it seems like the big N is just forgetting about the people who read this blog, and live and breathe in the gaming community. It's super and all the way that they are making the big bucks off of Mom and Pop and Joe Blow, but where the fuck is my H.A.M.M.E.R????????????

Rockvillian, that's hilarious.

It looked crappy but it was a step in a less kid orientated direction.. now Nintendo's stand is becoming increasingly clear.

Jim, I agree with you 100%. This game and Metroid were my two favorite titles I tried at E3 2006. In my heart, I knew this cancellation was happening, but I pretended not to believe it.

C'mon. You smash robots with a hammer. What else do you need?

When I played it, it played like a really good arcade beat 'em up, like TMNT 2 or Captain America and the Avengers. The graphics were still the most impressive yet on the Wii. All sorts of permanent yet subtle environmental damage effects.

Rev. Anthony . . . are you sure casual games aren't hurting the gaming scene for those of us who truly love it? The developers stated they were diverting resources to focus on something more casual. And then it was cancelled.

I thought this game looked kinda like balls. I definitely wouldn't have boughten it. I hope they canceled the title because it was a bad idea, not to focus their effort on something else. They're making so much money right now I'm sure they could have finished it if they wanted to.

But Jim, calm down a minute, the game looked like shit, perhaps this was indeed the logical reason it got cancelled. Perhaps it has evolved into a completely new project. People hate the type of Wii games which rely on gimmicky controls demonstrating no step forward in terms of game interaction, yet this game looked like the prototype to all the gimmicky style waggle games which people like to bitch about right now.

It's very convenient that people are very positive about a Wii game that doesn't even exist. It's like "Told you so, it's just typical, the best game in the world is cancelled by Nintendo because they obviously don't want us to play good games".

The game looked like shit, it featured a crap nondescript muscle head character who goes round smashing up one slow forgettable enemy at a time with waggle movements replacing button bashing, it got cancelled because it was obviously shit, the way alarmists are using it as an example of "Nintendo raping the hardcore gamer" is pathetic.

If people want to make a case for Nintendo somehow delibertely destroying the bloodline of "real" gamers, then there has to be some credible consistency to that point. The fact that Nintendo has already released, and has known traditional games on the horizon instantly proves the old "Wii, destroyer of gaming's soul" argument, completely void. Boring guys, very boring.

If you've been with the big n for this whole time you know the hardest core game your going to see is either a metroid or zelda. Mario and smash have even jumped ship to the more casual side which is just what they want to do. Point of the matter if you bought a wii for anything other then casual games then your life is going to be full of disappointment.

I was hoping for this game, but I hadn't heard anything on it in so long, I kinda forgot about it. Does sound fun, what with the smashing and the robots and the hammers and all. Correction. Did sound fun.

Truly a shame. Granted, it beat out even Z&W for worst title ever, but as many have said, fun premise, addictive gameplay and good visuals ftw.

I wouldn't get all up in arms about Sadness and D:DoC, however. There were a ton of game that we didn't hear anything about for months on the DS that eventually came to life. Does anyone here remember that Final Fantasy III was announced with the unvieling of the original Nintendo DS? We didn't see a single piece of artwork for a year. Sadness is coming, I think we all just write it off as vaporware because Nibris jumped the gun and started making things public in its conceptual stages; usually, we don't even hear about games until they're well into development. Also, c'mon, Nintendo just bought Monolith Soft. I highly doubt they'd cancel that game. and we have seen bits and pieces on it!

You know, I'll make a bet. If either of these games get cancelled, I will eat my hat. Seriously, I'll grill it and eat it. I'll even make a blog about it.

Nibris stated th following about Sadness in its last interview with Cubed3:

Game is still development and has a big budget
The expected release date is Q4 2008 / 2009
Game will not use WiiConnect24 and there will be no sequel
Nibris hinted at the game being present at the E For All event held in
October. Hopefully, that new promised trailer will be shown.
Nibris will continue to support both Nintendo platforms.

Nibris apparently showed off its games at Leipzig, but in private behind closed doors. The developer also has partnered with FOG Studios which is some kind of successful management firm. FOG will represent Nibris at the Tokyo Game Show, but it's not known if anything game-related will be shown there.

Zardoz: It's a matter of opinion that the game looked like shit. I'm well aware that people claimed as such, but I disagree, and Tristero actually had hands-on time with it and his opinions are posted earlier in the thread. He liked it, if you missed his post.

Saying Nintendo "has some real games" is similar to Nintendo's claim that they're serious about online gaming. Sure, there are a few token examples, but nothing that indicates any serious kind of movement. We have, what -- Metroid, Smash Bros. and Galaxy, all of which are old Nintendo failsafes anyway. H.A.M.M.E.R was, at least, a brand new IP.

We'll see what happens with Disaster: Day of Crisis.

I freaking love Metroid, but it's getting kind of annoying how all the games I'm looking forward to deal with mascots that I'm already overly familiar with.
