Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Don't tell me you're surprised; we could all see this coming from miles away, right? Plus, if Blizzard announced something like another World of WarCraft expansion in friggin' Korea (being the StarCraft capitol of the world and all), I imagine they'd have a small-scale riot on their hands.

IGN's Charles Onyett is liveblogging the event in Seoul as we speak, providing the world with lots of sexy, sexy information about the much-anticipated sequel, but no images or videos just yet. Undoubtedly, we'll be seeing some high-resolution official media at Blizzard's official Web site in a short while -- 'til then, keep your eyes glued to Destructoid for more information.

Update: Dig the CGI trailer!

Update 2: Electric Boogaloo:  IGN's got some crazy awesome screenshots, which you can check out here. Also, for more information, check out Blizzard's official press release after the jump.

SEOUL, South Korea – May 19, 2007 – Blizzard Entertainment® today unveiled StarCraft® II, the sequel to its award-winning real-time strategy game StarCraft, at the 2007 Blizzard Worldwide Invitational event in Seoul, South Korea. The announcement took place inside the Olympic Gymnastics Arena, in front of thousands of attendees, who received a presentation that included a StarCraft II cinematic trailer and a gameplay demonstration by the development team.

Designed to be the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game, StarCraft II will feature the return of the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg races, overhauled and re-imagined with Blizzard's signature approach to game balance. Each race will be further distinguished from the others, with several new units and new gameplay mechanics, as well as new abilities for some of the classic StarCraft units that will be making a reappearance in the game. StarCraft II will also feature a custom 3D-graphics engine with realistic physics and the ability to render several large, highly detailed units and massive armies on-screen simultaneously.

"With StarCraft II, we'll be able to do everything we wanted to do with the original StarCraft and more," stated Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We recognize that expectations are high following the long-running popularity of the original game, but we plan to meet those expectations and deliver an engaging, action-packed, competitive experience that StarCraft players and strategy gamers worldwide will enjoy."

StarCraft II will include a unique single-player campaign, as well as fast-paced online play through an upgraded version of Blizzard's renowned online gaming service, Battle.net ®. In addition, the game will come with a powerful, full-featured map editor that will put the same tools used by Blizzard's designers into the hands of players.

Blizzard is developing StarCraft II for simultaneous release on the Windows® and Macintosh® PC platforms. Further information about the game, including details on the single-player, multiplayer, and map-editor features, as well as system requirements, pricing, and availability, will be announced in the months ahead. To learn more about StarCraft II, please visit the official website at www.starcraft2.com.

Blizzard is laughing at the faces of others who need in-game advertising to pay their games; they don't need that kind of money.

They have gone beyond that with the credit cards thing...

I guess I guess I should start putting money away for a new computer that will be able to handle the game when it comes out...

I think the graphical style is top-notch and appropriate. It takes the look from WarcraftIII and Starcraft, blends them, adds some sheen, gives the units some frickin' weight, and finishes up with some awesome sauce.

Not following the brown, gritty, and realistic love-train was a good choice for Blizz too, esp. since Korea already loves the shit outta the original Starcraft. Wow I can call it the original now... we're in the future!

This game is already rocking my world. I am going to have it's babies multiple times.

If I were in prison, I would happily be it's bitch. Hell, I'll be it's bitch outside of prison.

And Blizzard will probably be dumb enough to put unnecessary "features" in it. Remember how you could only select 12 units at a time in the first time, unlike almost EVERY OTHER RTS? Maybe this time it'll be 8.

Seriously, whoever it is in that company who thinks that's a good idea needs to be fired...

What the hell people? (To those who seem to want heroes)

Warcraft III style heroes would RUIN StarCraft's formula completely! The biggest difference between StarCraft and Warcraft is that StarCraft has much less focus on micro-management, and more on macro-management. As I see it, this is the only reason they bother mentioning the fact that the game will be able to have large numbers of units in game and on screen at one time. Sure some units have some abilities and things, but they tend to be abilities that affect crowds.

Maybe heroes like they were in Starcraft single player would work, as they would probably just be slightly souped up versions of other units, but beyond that, I see no need to have heroes in StarCraft multiplayer.

It looks like they are trying to stick very closely to the original game, but are just adding some new units and making necessary modifications to the old ones that result from these additions.

Heres a nice video of the gameplay with better quality

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_mEDcBDPF0

In all fairness I loved the CGI so much more than the actual gameplay, I wish they hadnt cancelled ghost. Oh well, I know some guys that would give an arm and a leg to play this. Is like xmas for them.

Back to halo 3 beta.

No Heroes please. If you want to put a hero that must survive in a campaign mission, that's fine, but summoning heros in the standard skirmish would draw away from building a balanced force. With Heroes, you're just building an entourage to die for your hero while he does all the heavy lifting. Fcuk that.

Yaaaa, another graphiclly inferior game with a kick@ss CGI/FMV intro. Sadly, ppl blindly follow Blizzard like ppl blindly follow Apple...it's almost as if these 2 companies could never do wrong.

Sorry but you dont get it (neither do I actually) SC just like WC is not about super ultra next gen graphics is about deep, really deep gameplay and (surpringsily enough) a pretty much good engaging history that keeps you wanting to know more.

I couldnt sit all the way through WC3 (I lack RTS skills) but I have to admit the history is pretty interesting.

Besides it may not use the latest in CGI graph, but the art and models are top notch.

-> Hexen: Point me to a bad blizzard game or just shut the hell up.

The decision to get this game is a no-brainer. Just have to replay the first again before it's released. I'm remaining neutral on the graphics until I see them in action.

Im all for the idea of Heroes and other new features. I believe Blizzard is smart enough to include a "Tournament" mode that will go back to the original style of gameplay that Koreans have become so entrenched in. Everyone wins.

Dear god please don't let there be hero units like wc3. It realy wasn't an rts more of an rpg with rts elements.

The hero units destroyed WC3 as a fun game for me, and if they are in SC2 they will repeat the trend, unless done much differently.

For all those complaining about hero units and how they "ruined" WC3...

Didn't Starcraft 1 also have hero units?

You know, like Kerrigan (Terran and Zerg versions), Jim Raynor, Zeratul, etc.

I don't remember those "ruining" the Starcraft experience that much. Granted, it wasn't to quite the same degree as in WC3 (which I thought was fine, personally), but they were still there.

Granted, too, those were only in single player, but I don't see how hero units would kill multiplayer.

(On the other hand, I don't play multiplayer games much at all, ever, so I'm probably out of touch.)

Oh yeah is not an MMO, crap someone really pulled my leg with that one. Oh well at least I didnt bet.

I was wrong with the MMO thing, I still cant believe it, although Im not sure making an RTS instead of an MMO in these days is such a hot idea, but I dont know if theres someone who can pull it off is blizzard.

Btw, would you be able to save your stats online? maybe conquer territories? that would be interesting.
