Captain Obvious: Online players like to say 'gay' a lot photo

In another example of shocking news related to studies, a recent gaming survey on the homophobia that permeates the video game landscape says that a majority of online players use the words "that's so gay" or another form of "gay bashing" in their time spent shooting people in the face. From Next-Gen:

88% of respondents said they had heard the phrase “that’s so gay” while 84% said they had heard ‘gay’ used in a derogatory fashion. Over 50% said they felt that games portray gay people in a stereotypical way, while 42% believe gays are under-represented in games. 15% said the industry creates a culture where gay employees “feel like they must stay in the closet”. 52% believed that the gaming community is hostile to gay and lesbian gamers. Only 9% said they “never” encounter anti-gay sentiments from online gamers.

Did we really need a study to tell us something like this? Halo is notorious for this kind of behavior and anyone who's played video games online in the past decade certainly hears this kind of talk for just about every minute of play.

What do you expect to happen when you gather a bunch of socially-inept boys behind the safety of a keyboard and make them feel like a man for 15 minutes because they have a virtual rifle in their hands? It's not to say we condone this sort of idiocy, but for the most part it's just mindless babble from youngin's that just don't know any better. Or really, it's just the way of talking for most young boys who use the phrases "that's gay" or "your gay" because they're not smart enough to come up with original insults.

What's your take on the issues that plague online gaming when it comes to hate speech or potential hate speech? Should we just pass it off as normal male immaturity or is it a huge problem that deserves more attention?

Gay use to mean happy before homosexuals "took it." So maybe people are saying "that's so happy!"
Someone had to say it...

For a lot of people it has just become part of their vocabulary. It isn't like they are bashing gay people, it is just a term they use to reference "lame" or what have you. Just like fuck has replaced "gosh darn." If people really think they are bashing gays then they are mistaken. This article is so gay... :)

this reminds me of a story that came up in 1995 by the cabot dairy farmers of the north east.

they claimed that gamers where using the term 'cheesy' or even 'cheese' to qualify a gamer as one who ends matches with cheap or unblockable attacks.

as we all know, cheese sales suffered through the late 90's due to this term, as many people would see cheese in the aisles and think of trying to block fireballs.

well the courts ruled that this style of gameplay was indeed cheesy, and the dairy farmers have to live with the fact that this term now has two meanings.

just like when someone hords the energy sword in halo2. thats just gay.

I don't have a 360, but when I played on Live on the original XBOX it was pretty bad when I played football and basketball. I think it's just immaturity. Kids repeat shit that they hear, but I imagine that some of it is serious hate. How do you curtail it? Parents play games with your kids or at least be nearby when they game. Tough, but aside from actually teaching them morality, is there another choice?

Complete BS. People love finding new ways to be offended. It just sets up for another law suit so some dumb f*ck doesn't have to work any more. I hear/read it very little in my MMORPGs(except for Guild Wars, children abound there it seems).

I don't find the terms and phrases used to be all that derogatory towards gays since its mainly immature guys that haven't grown out of their teen years. Plus any gay person that takes offense to those types of people using those terms should go back to GAY 101, where you learn that your better than everyone else and to judge everyone!

Plus I wonder how many anti-retard statements people have heard while playing games.

As a man aspiring to be an English teacher with various A's handed to me by the British exam board for English language, I would say I'm no stranger to using the word "gay". But, as with all words, it's moved beyond 'homosexual' as it once did move beyond 'happy' and now just means 'crap'.

Utilising the typical "I have lots of black friends" defence, I can also confirm that homosexuals use the term "gay" to mean something bad too. Oh the irony!

I have friends who are homosexuals and they say that crap all the time too. I guess it's universal. For fun though, when I was babysitting my teenage cousins, when they mentioned that something was "gay" I told them I'd bring one of my friends over and they could disseminate what's gay and what's not.

Calling a teenager's bluff on homophobia, FTW!

What some people should realize is that many people still consider homosexuality to be entirely unnatural, and therefor it is ok to use stereotypical, derogatory words. You really have to imagine how people actually are these days. My dad, and right-wing ultra-conservative, says that if gay people are allowed to get married, then in the future bestiality and sex with children will be legitimized. I think that's outrageous, because sex between two adults is considered sex by consent, whereas sex with children and animals would obviously be forcible. I guess my dad just thinks that the world is largely "evil". :)

I don't find it offensive mostly because I know it doesn't come from a place of hate. That being said, I don't appreciate it and suscribe to the rule, "if you don't know me personally, don't even go there" even if it's a joke. In regards to the study, it may have not been necessary for hardcore gamers but I think the general population is oblivious to it and if you ever make any claim regarding race, religion, creed and orientation, you better have some data to back it up.

I don't think it's the actual use of the word 'gay' that's offensive (most homosexuals refer to themselves as 'gay' anyway), but that 'gay' itself is an insult. That doesn't create an atmosphere of acceptance for anyone who is gay, because the word is being thrown around as a general purpose insult and could mean anything from 'stupid' to 'cheap' to 'whiny' or whatever else. Just replace 'gay' with any racial slur that may or may not be embraced by the community it targets and you may start to understand why calling every little disagreeable action in a game 'gay' is problematic not because of the word itself but because of the negativity surrounding it.

I think its kinda irrelevant what you think the word means, if it is meant like gay is meant so much of the time to mean (as said above) crap, then thats a homophobic comment, and just a racist comment, its not a good thing to.
Just because youre not offended by being called gay, people who are gay/bi/trans etc may possibly feel shitty or offended because of it. The problem is the fact the majority of people who play games dont realise the impact using shitty insults like that have on people, or let it slip past without caring. There is also the problem of ignorance, you mention transgender and most people go wtf or just take the piss, though, for 14 yr old boy, I guess without parents explaining stuff then its sadly excepted.

Yeah, the namecallers and kiddiez on the original XBL had me so hesitant to try out XBL on the 360, but when I had to re-ship one for a friend living overseas, I tried it out and was much please with how much more mature and well thought out the service seemed to be. Original XBL = My Space on Teh Internetz/360 XBL = Dating a high priced hooker who remembers your name each time, and knows your short list of safe-words.

That said, I did rattle off a few choice words yesterday when playing Crackdown. But it wasn't anything I'd say in front of my Mom.

I call BS. How do you know some of the regular shmoes walking down the street are or aren't gay. You're not allowed to say that there aren't enough gay character and turn around and say that gay characters are stereotypes. IT'S HOW YOU KNOW THEY'RE GAY.
As if all game characters are straight unless they single themselves out as gay. That's as idiotic as assuming all game characters are gay unless they specify that they are straight.

Fucking gay community shoots themelves in the foot with shit like this all the time. It spotlights their own inability to recognise that not all gay people look/act/-broadcast that they are- gay.

It's all a problem of where/how you were brought up. Back in the day, most dumb kids said "that's gay" to mean, as mentioned before, dumb or crap or whatever. As they got older it just became one of those things they say without thinking, like if you listen to the D-toid podcast and drink everytime someone says fuck. On the other hand, it's also become an insult to many of the morons on XBL and most games, especially FPS and sports games, because the asshats talking trash are very homophobic. You might say "that's gay" in a nonhateful context, but the person on the other end of the comment might take it personally. The opposite is also true. This is just the kinda thing where if kids find a new slang word to use before they hit puberty, we wouldn't have a problem.

All I know is that I used to say that coming out of high school, but after personally seeing it affect some of the people I knew (who would get visibly upset when I said it or when it was said in public), I learned how bad it can make gay people feel.

I have never said it since.

Kids begin using the term 'that's gay' before they even get to the stage beyond URGHHH. GIRLS ARE DISGUSTING!

The idea that two boys would kiss would blow their minds.

Gay is just a word that has seen a change in meaning. As someone said earlier, it did mean happy and colourful, then it was used primarily to describe homosexuals, but now it's mostly used for another purpose. When someone uses the word as an insult, the question of sexuality doesn't even come into it. There is not homophobic intent.

I must admit - even as a rounded grown-up with gay friends and family, I still describe things as gay, and I'd guess that most of us do from time to time.

Are these people REALLY paid to do this... >_> That's gay. lol I find it funny when my gay friends say "That's gay." To those who get offended by this I'm sorry but it's slang. Get over it. I'm bi and it doesn't offend me at all and I know many gay people who aren't offended by it. I think people need to realize it isn't really a thing that makes gay people look bad just a phrase. Unless of course the person uses it in that manner then I understand getting upset.
Grimgnar's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/26/2007 16:29

A good majority of the time, its not even said with any sexual-oriented meaning. Its not literally calling something homosexual. Its just calling them a word that they're likely to take offense to. Doesn't matter what the word is. If people took offense to "toe", thats what would be used. Gay just happens to be the easiest one to use lately, since if you drop an N-bomb, you're going to get crucified. Not that people don't still use that. Gay just seems to be more prevelant.

Racial/sexual slurs are something that would disappear if people stopped getting all butt hurt about them. The ignorant people who use them won't go away, but if you take away the words power by not taking offense, or just blatantly ignoring it, they'll have to find some other way to get to you.

Remember "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me"? Don't go around saying it, because you'll sound like a putz, but keep it in mind.

@ Kylegamgee re: "fucking gay community shoots themselves in foot"... I'm pretty sure the article didn't say it was a survey of gays & lesbians. So if 42% of people, regardless of their sexual orientation, say homos are underrepresented in games, then how is that the evil gay community shooting itself in the foot? it sounds like the results of a survey to me. And as far as the whole gay-as-insult thing goes, I realize that most of the time it's an innocuous put-down, but there is most definitely homophobia involved, whether it is acknowledged or not. If the word was Latino or Black instead of Gay then there wouldn't even be a question of whether it is a biased word.

@ Kex. Fuck you and your idiotic I'm bi so it's ok to use it rhetoric. The words we use control our minds, they control how we are able to analyze concepts and how we view the world and other people. Language can be used as a weapon, but it doesn't always have to be a sledgehammer. More often it's a chisel that slowly chips away at how a person or groups of people view themselves, or how they are seen by outsiders.
Grimgnar's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/26/2007 23:25

I think you have it backwards. The words we use are a reflection of our minds, not the other way around. We analyze concepts then put them into words. Concepts can exist without words, words cannot exist without concepts.

Language can be used as a weapon, but its not an unstoppable force. If you don't accept the words someone is speaking to you, they can't harm you.

Thats where the parent should step in. If not for a parent, who else is supposed to protect their kid from that kind of thing, and help explain it to them so they understand?

Kids are going to be exposed to unsavory elements in the world, and theres nothing you can do about that part of it. The parents job isn't to shield the kid from the real world, but to explain why stuff like bigotry isn't how things should be.
