Captain Obvious: God of War IV will happen photo

What’s left for Kratos after God of War III? It looks like the spirited man who spits in the faces of gods and titans will resume his role as the spirited man who spits in the faces of gods and titans.

In a not-so-recent interview with Gamervision, Sony Santa Monica director of project development John Hight revealed that the God of War series is set to continue after God of War III is released.

"This is not the end of God of War,” Hight said during the video interview. “This is definitely the end of the trilogy, but we're going to continue to do God of War games.

“We're going to be very careful about what we do. We're the keepers of the franchise and we don't want to see it ruined or polluted."

I assume that Kratos will resume his role in the next God of War, but it’s possible that another protagonist could step into the picture -- and that’s not a bad thing if you chew on it real nice and slow. I’m all about controlling Kratos’ mini-game bastard child in an epic adventure to find his father. Or, a gryffon flight sim. That'd be rad.

Kratos's brother is bound to appear sooner or later.

Not surprised, depending on how God of War 3 turns out it would be interesting to see how the series pans out. I heard his brother may be the new character for the games after 3. If the gryffon flight sim is anything like the Pegasus part of God of War 2, I'm all for it.

A new character would be pretty cool. I don't think they can continue with the same story after 3 since all points out the all the mayor gods of Olympus will be dead by then.

I can just see Kratos being whored out just like Mario. Soon we'll see a Kratos Kart. And Kratos and Zeus at the Olympic games.

I wouldn't mind more God of War games. I just hope they roll with a different mythos after the end of Kratos' triology.

I just realized that it would actually make sense if Kratos and Zeus were at the OLYMPIC games, on Mount Olympus. Make that game Sony! and their better be sex mini-games. I would so buy that, and it can use the wiimote, I mean "arc".

That makes sense.

I am so afraid this is what will happen to Mass Effect. Let it die Bioware/EA. The value will actually increase. Trust me.

One of the reasons I moved on Nintendo is I was sick of buying the same Mario/Zelda/Metroid EVERY DAMN TIME.

Sony and Microsoft had the benefit of no legacy the couple gens. But Kratos and Master Chief are turning into the Mario and Sonic of the new generation. I couldn't think of anything more boring. Trilogy and out is a good run for a franchise then maybe skip a gen or two and do a revival.

So GOW3 is where we get the ending we earned in GOW2 right? Heh GoW=God of War but also Gears of War, but the message is relevant for BOTH :( we need better sequel endings!

@Nic128: Kruigi?

If this keeps up, Kratos is going to have to start working through other pantheons. The Aesir & the Vanir. The Tuatha De Danann. The Seven Lucky Gods. The aspects of Brahman. They could go on and on.

Personally, I'm not worried until they a) just rehash the Greek pantheon with their Roman names or b) the demo for God Of War Umpteen finds you fighting a flying spaghetti monster and foreshadows an eventual showdown with JR "Bob" Dobbs.

@Chronic Logic:

Seriously... I think it's time for them to think about stopping the franchise there. God of War is a formidable action game series, but in no way they have the Miyamoto-ness required to spin original sequels one after the other. Players will get progressively more uninterested, this isn't Mario or Zelda.

@ Dolson

The characters would include Kratos, the Norse gods, and 15 different well-endowed Hookers.

God of War 4 will surely be called "God of War - Not so Modern Warfare", breaking the chain of sequels and resulting in commenter backlash when referred to as #4 in the series. Chaos and confusion ensues.

Well Kratos isn't exactly the most benevolent of all heroes, so I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a game where a new protagonist takes Kratos down.

@molath: I think Kratos v/s Mohammed would certainly net them more free press/death threats.

I think what he means is when a trilogy hits that third game it should die and I agree.

Even though technically this is the fourth game you know what I mean.

@Xzyliac: They're wrapping up Kratos's story arc but that doesn't mean there aren't more stories to tell within the GoW universe. As long as we don't see Modern God of Warfare XXVII then I don't see a problem.

I think he means the first three games form a trilogy based on Greek mythology, and that God Of War IV will go after Egyptian gods or something, likely with a new protagonist.

Didn't a secret ending in the first game hint at some kind of continuation of the story with a modern twist? You know, with the chopper finding the remains of a titan or whatever???

@Ignominus
Then what's the point of calling it a trilogy?

The way I see it it's more valuabe, more of a treasure, when you stick to traditional trilogy means. It has a beginning and a end. I know more can be done in the universe but I guess what I'm saying is don't call it God of War and don't use Kratos.

I'm sick of trilogies with a million sequels.
Kennydee's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/19/2010 11:33

@Xeyliac
If more can be done with universe and use a well established name for the monies, so what? I'm fairly sure Kratos who essentially IS the God of War anyway you want to look at it (considering his taking up the role is what brought on another 2 massive games) and the fact he's looking to bring down Olympus which would have a huge impact on any future games, the name is still quite relevant.

You know, considering he (presumably) killed all the GODS. And if the secret ending showing the chopper and titan is anything to go by, it's a big deal even in a fictional modern day setting.

Yeah. I dunno. I'm not an anti-sequel guy normally but...I dunno. This trilogy + a million squel business is bothersome. Just don't call it a trilogy. End one arc, move on to another, but don't call it a trilogy. It gives the impression of an ending. Or maybe that's me.

So wait, kratos is probably going to kill his dad and all the other gods in GoW3, what the hell is left to do after that? After gow3 they should start a new series with a similar style of gameplay but in a different setting with a different style.

Oh wait.. money, I forgot.

Kalmah's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/19/2010 12:39

What I think he means by trilogy is one consecutive story. The GoW Trilogy is basically the story of Kratos's rise and downfall and revenge towards the Gods of Mount Olympus. By the trilogy being over, he might be referring to the fact that Kratos's adventure towards the God's revenge will be over and they will start with a fresh new storyline and possibly character. Still doesn't make EXACT sense, but that's what I'm understanding. "A new chapter unfolds" kind of thing.

God of War: ODST anyone?

Theres is still one chapter that has not been told about Kratos' life. His brothers revenge! I dont think they can squeeze that into GOW3 but it would make for a great plot line in GOW4.
