Hey guys, have you heard the news? Things get LEAKED on the INTERNET! Yeah, I never saw that one coming either, but apparently the latest victim is Gears of War 2, having been hacked and distributed on torrent sites two weeks before release.
GamesIndustry.biz notes that on one site, 600 people were seeding the 6.76GB file for 6000 eager leeches -- a mere fifteen hours after upload.
This happens to every major retail game and frankly, it's rather ridiculous and more than a little low. The odd bit of piracy is something that never makes me blink, but the wholesale ripping off of a game has never sat well with me.
Frankly, I don't blame Epic for being less than keen on putting Gears 2 on the PC.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
clearly it's not done much to stop piracy.
Which has WHAT to do with the 360 version getting pirated?
They didn't even blame piracy for not doing a PC version, but that it didn't sell well and wasn't well recieved, critically, because the new Epic sucks shit and are lazy worthless fucks that can't even be bothered to replace the Xbox control references in the menus. An extra level in a shitty port does not do anything to make it less of a shitty port.
I checked last night and there were a total of over 10,000 people seeding or leeching GoW2 across four torrents that I checked the stats on. Fucking LOL, console piracy.
maybe they didn't think a CRACK FIEND is a credible source?
Yeah, more missions, better framerates and higher resolution totally makes a shittier version.
It is, what it is, what it is Afro!
People will always steal and I don't think that will change too much. The only newer games that I have downloaded are ones that don't provide demos, like Portal. I downloaded it, played it and then went out and bought Orange Box the next week as I loved the game. Then you get games like Crysis, I never tried the demo and asked for it for X-mas....and now I don't really care for it too much.
Uhh, the 360 version got pirated, just as with Fallout 3. I don't see how this reflects badly on the PC at all. In fact, I think it demonstrates that the PC-developer fetish for blaming piracy misses the ubiquity of the practice.
What's next, developers won't release games for any system because they might get pirated?
COMING SOON FOR TIGER HANDHELD: GEARS OF WAR 3!
Tell that to my buddies in highschool with their 100 CD Case Spindles of copied PC and PSX games.
I grewup using emulators, copying psx games that I rented from the local video store, downloading music and anime, and this was back in 2000.
The problem I have with this sites attitude toward pirating, is how freak'n self-righteous you guys sound.
One minute you guys are celebrating the translation of Mother 3 and promoting the illegal activity of downloading a game you can easily buy from an import shop. Yeah its in japanese, but that doesn't give you the legal right to download an illegal copy and then modifying it with a translation patch (which is also illegal).
Yet, then you post about how freak'n bad pirating is, and how much of a douche bag people are for pirating Gears of War 2.
I"m sorry, but you can't have it both ways.
Either shut the fuck up about pirating all together, or stop promoting emulation. I just don't get you people sometimes. Its ok to pirate Mother 3 (you guys fucking asked everyone to celebrate about this), but not ok to pirate Gears of War 2. Yes I know Gears of War 2 is available in english, while Mother 3 is not, but that doesn't give you the right to create a modified copy of the game, that is still an act of piracy.
Piracy is Piracy, that is it. It is illegal, no matter how you look at it. If you are too cheap/ignorant/morally imbalanced to purchase a game, then don't play game...
Nick Chester posted the article about Mother 3's translation.
Jim Sterling posted this article about pirating GoW2.
It has nothing to do with Destructoid's attitude toward pirating. Those are two different editors with two different opinions.
And Destructoid doesn't censor their editors for having differing opinions.
Maybe they should keep it to the c-blogs or something.
Probably not.
Big deal.
...for something that was leaked yesterday afternoon?
just stating fact? actually you're making a guess.
i don't see you referencing any stats on piracy here, mainly because they don't exist and if they did, they would be in no way credible. there really is no way to measure the extent of piracy on any format.
they are going to burn the files to disk and play them in their modified xboxes.
The files are for playing on a modified console, not for emulators
so what you're saying is that yes it was a guess, and no you don't have any source to verify it? i said there was no way to track the number of pirated games, and there isn't.
What this means, you idiots, is that if the console version had this amount of pirates, the PC version would have been quadruple and seen little to no sales at all.
Yes, we all know that GOW for the PC was a horrible port with game-breaking glitches such as your savegames mysteriously dissappearing and frequent crashes to the desktop (If you could even run the game without an instant crash!) but still, we all know that piracy on the PC is on a much higher level than on any console.
Also, Byrc has been proven wrong on most of his statements in other newsposts, we still have no idea why is he so bitter towards Mother 3 being translated :)
If a game is in Japanese, I won't buy it. They really aren't losing a sale at all, it's their idiocy to not bring the game this side, probably because of "questionable" content such as transvestites and what not.
Also, are you people really too dense to understand Jim's PC comment? In other words, if the console version has already leaked and is being pirated, one can only imagine how much more quickly and prolifically the PC version would be torrented. Many more people torrent PC games than console ones.
Satsumomo: As long as we don't have numbers that back that assertion it's only a guess.
Secondly, to play this requires effort. It requires a modded Xbox, disc burning, whatever else it is these people do to get their copies working on their consoles. That's if they're not made to work on the PC anyway (which is something I would assume -- and only assume -- is popular, since the 360 and PC aren't exactly worlds apart.) If people are willing to go through the effort needed to make a 360 hack work, then you have to assume that a lot more people would pirate the game if it was as easy as downloading to your PC hard drive and leaving it there.
Yes, this is all assumption on my part, but that's the point -- with the amount of shit going on with PC users and piracy, you can't blame Epic for making those same assumptions.
I can count on one hand the amount of 360 games I have seen on torrent sites this year.
Buy the game, it'll be worth the 60 bucks.
"I can count on one hand the amount of 360 games I have seen on torrent sites this year."
the following 360 games were illegally released onto the internet in the LAST WEEK alone:
Midnight Club Los Angeles
Dead Space
Gears Of War 2
MotoGP 08
Saints Row 2
Fable 2
Golden Axe Beast Rider
Blitz The League II
FIFA Soccer 09
Pro Evolution Soccer 2009
I never said there weren't exceptions. Generally though, I'm sure the statistics would prove me right in saying that there are more PC pirates online than console pirates. That said, that might shine a negative light on the PC market, if people are pirating the console version of Fallout 3 over the PC version. Casual pirates like me don't even know how to make a usable 360 disc.
You cannot run 360 games on the PC. The 360 has three processor cores from a brand and model that is not available on PC (IBM does not make consumer PC processors, only specialized chips for premade electronics) and a unique graphics chip. Games would need to be manually ported using the source code in order to make them play on PC.
Playing pirate games on a 360 is dead simple, especially compared to last gen, and can be done without even breaking your console's warranty sticker. It's almost as easy as pirating on the DS at this point.
Your assumptions are dead wrong. They're easily proven wrong with a couple minute's research, too. Shame.
@byrc oh fuck off. If you actually care about downloading a rom of an out of date Japanese game from the last generation so you can use a fan-made english translation your sense of morality is WAY more fucked than anybody else here. You need to get your priorities in check. Most people would've bought it had it been ported and released new in the US, but it wasn't, and importing it makes nobody profits but importers... whom Nintendo and the other console makers and publishers despise, attack, and attempt to thwart and shut down at every chance.
That's a pretty thin argument. The PC is a terrible platform to develop on because... Xbox 360 games get pirated easily? Sure, it would get pirated on the PC, but this just goes to show you that it would get pirated on the 360 too.
I don't think it takes a lot more knowledge or effort to pirate Xbox 360 games than PC games. Every system is going to have its thieves.
