Capcom worried about anti-videogame 'smear campaigns' photo

It's been fairly obvious that a number of media outlets, including our old friends FOX News and The Daily Mail, have something of a vendetta against violent videogames. For example, the Mail can't claim impartiality when it once ran the headline, "BAN THIS SICK FILTH." While most people view these reports as harmless stupidity, Capcom is more concerned, believing that these smear campaigns could affect business.

"Some of our popular software titles have provocative graphics and text, such as violent and grotesque scenes," Capcom told investors while outlining business concerns for 2010. "Accordingly, in the event of violent incidents and other criminal cases involving juveniles, we may be subject to a smear campaign by some sections of the mass media which often point out the correlation between crime and games.

"Therefore, there is a risk that it may result in having an adverse effect on our business performance, corporate value and narrowed distribution channel under instructions by the relevant authorities."

I'm actually very glad that Capcom is taking such problems seriously. Publishers have a terrible habit of simply ignoring media attacks, when some of the stuff printed about videogames borders on the libelous. It's about time publishers bit back at the lazy journalistic scum who try and link games to violent crime because it's easier than blaming the criminals themselves.

I don't see them facing anything, nothing in this blog denotes any action. This sounds just like every other finical end of the year meeting, it's all speculation, that's their job to project the future fiscal cycle.

The only thing this means at all, is that video games are progressing to a higher level of Mature labeled games.

Wow, someone went to PR school.

But seriously, Capcom doesn't need to worry about shit. The only people that would take a smear campaign against Capcom (or a company like Capcom, I'm looking at you Rockstar!) are those bastards that hate video games already. I could never see anyone that actually plays video games regularly "coming to their senses" one morning after seeing an advert that cries about the evils of video game violence.

How exactly would they take this shit seriously? By wearing forlorn or concerned looks on their faces? Or by changing the games to cause people to giggle instead of scream, and to become piles of yams when blown apart?

I don't see this as a problem. Video games will be under fire from the media forever, and the only people who are actually concerned about it are the ones that don't play videogames. Those that do play them ignore this crap, and enjoy the games for what they are, games.

And seriously, shut up about FOX News already. Plenty of other news outlets that bash gaming and society in general far more.

If you take zombie videogames' violence seriously, then you have serious problems.

I'm just tired of people ragging on gaming and these antivideogames campaigns don't make people think any better of videogames. Also fox news is a joke.

With some of the shit that gets printed about videogames, there are enough grounds for libel suits. Things like the FOX News Mass Effect debacle, where the network was basically allowed to tell blatant lies on live television, should not be happening. Not only do they happen, but the game industry just sits back and lets it.

They don't so much as release a statement. At the very least, Capcom seems like it's interested in addressing the sheer volume of bullshit that goes on. I, for one, am glad to see someone grow a set.

Video game companies love controversy, heck No Russian was featured in the very first teaser trailer for MW2. Controversy = publicity = more sales, if you're slow to respond and clarify and let the controversy get bigger its to your benefit.

And on the rare chance that there is an oppurtunity to bite back it's some moron doing the talking.

Remember the Fox News MW2 thing? While it never caught steam that panel was teeth grinding to watch.

But ya know this shit happens all the time. I don't think it warrants some big nerd raeg rally. They attack film and music too. And literature when the literature is popular enough.

I've said it once and I'll say it again: When you retaliate you feed the beast.

@jim

From the statement they put out, doesn't it seem more like they are scared of the reaction than are preparing to defend themselves? Actually, this statement seems more like Capcom would try to "tone-down" their games because they are afraid of the adverse reaction than prepare to deal with the storm that is approaching. Not to say that they will do that, obviously because it would take a lot of time and money, but it seems more like that is what they are advocating to me...

The fact that news media is sensationalizing game controversey is a sign of how totally terrible we have it in the US(NPR doesn't count). I think it stems from the fact that a certain Administration in the 80's decided to burn the Fairness Doctrine from the 40's. Because of this, News can show and tell whatever they want, whether it's one-sided, irrelevant, or near-slanderous(*cough* Fox News *cough*)

@Jim I think your confused their not releasing a statement at all. This is direct at investors, no one else. Not to the main stream gamer, not to news outlets, no one who would other wise actually care. This only informs investors that future investment returns could be lower. Technically they are using, media as a crutch in case of lower than expected revenues. Which is pretty low because there's very little effect technically, look at COD:MW2 for example.

@RenagadePanda Those other news outlets are probably a subsidiary of Fox News or are sourcing Fox News as the primary research. You have to learn to read fine print. If you love the network, that's your serious issue. Hell they have hundreds of smaller news organizations. Fox News is owned by News Corp and runs newspapers/stations around the world.

Fox news exemplifies why the privatization of media outlets is problematic. They have to own up to nobody. They reflect the interests of whoever runs the company. Unlike public broadcasting, albeit less flashy, has to answer to the public. Not a perfect solution but a step in the right direction in properly informing the public.
Volomon's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/04/2010 16:50

@warturkey Exactly Fox News is owned by a 75 year old man, the news on the channel reflects his own thoughts and concerns. They will up his own political interests and down others. Once you inject private control over media, especially one that is suppose to be objective and unbiased, it's no longer a relevant news source.

Some news suffers from individual bias but once the management from top to bottom gets involved it's truly bias.

This is just business - you throw everything into your fiscal reports because if you don't, lawyers come back on you and say "hey - you knew this was a potential risk and you didn't inform investors, you defrauded them."

Yes, they should retaliate. They do this kind of crap for the ratings. They pursue the ratings for money. So, punch them in their pocketbook. If it is successful, and other companies see how easy it is, you will hear way less "ban this sick filth".

Free money for Capcom and others, while taking money from the slime that is Fox news via lawsuit? Yes, please.

Hey, just put this game contains scenes of graphic violence and coarse language warnings like with every horror game. People warned, problem solved. Glad we don't have fox news here. I've watched it online when something amusing happens and I've got to say, I'm amazed anyone can take it seriously, but different strokes and whatnot. I'm sure capcom doesn't have to worry, but if they hit back, more power to them.

baseball - no scenes of graphic violence at all, but actually causes horrifying acts of violence.

Is it obvious variables like competition, and dysfunctional emotional development, a culture that promotes wars to settle economic conflicts?

Or should we ban baseball.

PS,
PhDs have already studied this one and the verdict is in.

Sports is indoctrination for promoting war.
Competition often becomes criminal and violent.
It's not the game - it is the fact our little monkey minds handle fear and competition by becoming violent. Education and access to medical care is supposed to raise us out of this primitive social behavior.

Glad I could be of service putting this issue to rest FOR ALL TIME NEVER TO BE NEEDLESSLY PONDERED AS AN UNKNOWN EVER AGAIN.

Baseball isn't the only sport to incite violence.. look at football (no you nitwits, not American football, European football). Isn't there a riot every time someone either wins or loses and the crowd becomes upset?

Please, A gamer isn't going to riot because he died at the Tyrent fight in RE1 100 times. maybe smash a controller or yell at the screen... but nothing like the riots I've seen over sporting events.

I've never agreed with some people in the world's mentality (in general, no one here) who would look at bullies and liars and cheats and just choose to ignore them with the reasoning the people behaving that way either aren't worth the energy or they want attention so by not acknowledging them is the best way or they aren't worth the trouble, etc.

People who lie, cheat or in the case of the media and gaming manipulate and spread libel for shock ratings, they rely on the companies or people they lie about to just take it. The reason shitty people keep behaving that way is because no one stops them. That's a simple truth of all the bad behaving people out there.
If the day comes and Capcom steps up if they are lied about, good for them. Garbage like Fox will never stop because people sit around and call them garbage. You have to hit them where it hurts them, in this case with lawsuits to affect ratings and ad revenue.

Bioware and EA not fighting the whole Mass Effect thing and blatant lies was pathetic. That was a can't lose case. They don't bother, Fox gets the ratings and goes on to do whatever lie they want with the next guy.
Good job.

Actually, this text appears in a section of the financial report right next to "if the dead come back to life, we're hosed in royalty payments".

It's just a part of the report where they highlight highly improbable events that investors should be aware of anyway if they were following the media, and just in case they weren't.

It's like InvestorFAQs or something.
