Capcom wants you to design a Monster Hunter Tri weapon photo

Capcom has announced a contest over on Unity today to give you Monster Hunter fans a chance to design and/or name a weapon in the PAL version of their upcoming Wii title, Monster Hunter Tri.

If you whipped out your crayons just now, it should be noted that the contest is only open to Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The weapon must belong to one of the official categories, so keep that in mind if you're designing one. You can check out the full set of rules and list of categories here.

If you're not the artsy-fartsy type, you can still come up with a monicker for one of the currently nameless weapons in the game. You can choose one from each category and submit your entries here. Head over to Capcom-Unity Europe for more info.

If you need some inspiration, I would suggest a great and powerful sword called "Brad Nicholson's pecs."

One of the ranged weapons just needs to be a mega buster.

I made a weapons called "Naim's Penis", it's one of those giant FF7-ish swords, but even bigger, heavier and thicker; it does massive damage and it's the best weapon in the game.

What if "The Pecs of Brad Nicholson, Slayer of God" was actually a pair gauntlets which each had a pectoral. Tough as diamond, pretty much shatters your game-disc once you acquire it because the chains have come off the item on the disc. Yeah... if that happened, day 1 purchase.

From what I've seen of the gameplay, Monster Hunter Tri desperately needs faster, albeit probably weaker, weapons.

Everything I've seen about the game indicates that weaving in and out of boss attack patterns is completely impractical because your character is weilding Cloud's Buster Sword, with all the inertia and power of an 18 wheeler. I can't really say this game looks worth buying as is, so many faster weapons for the American release would be ideal.

Also, they should try to eliminate the load times. But that's for a different article.

A chained sword cannon fits the bill quite nicely. Imagine a harpoon launcher, but with a sword that's also tethered. I mean, this is coming from the series that has gunlances of all things. Why not a cannonsword? :D

@Doomsday Exactly, maybe something for team play. Something teammates could use to pin and hold the bigger beasts down for as long as they have stamina.

Original Concept... do not steal...

Ok, a Lightning Buster Cloud Sword that shoots bees, no hives of bees! Enough to give any monster that swallowed you a stomach ache!

Patent Pending etc.

@Hcapt: That's kinda the point of the Great Sword. It's slow, but you can combo with it forever granted you don't get hit. You can't run with the weapon drawn but you can roll and dodge attacks. You can also block with the weapon, something that not all the weapons can do. While you combo with the weapon, you are immune to the wind pressure that happens when a monster flaps its wings. The Great Sword trades off its immense power by being slow. That doesn't mean it's a bad weapon, only that you have to know how to use it.

Besides, there's plenty of faster and "weaker" weapons in 3. The Sword and Shield is a fast, combo-heavy weapon, and when used by someone who is good with it, can make killing monsters online with others extremely easy. The Slash Axe and Long Sword are also both very combo-intensive, fast-paced weapons. You can't block with those, however, that's the trade off.

Anyways, as for a weapon I'd design, well I can't cuz I don't live in Europe, but if I could, I'd make some Dual Sentinels. But, there's no Dual Swords in MH3, so...

Wyvern Blade "Ash". Always thought it'd be cool to have a dragon-element long sword made from Rathalos in the prior games.

@ Vanor - while that may be true, it is very rare to see a faster sword in gameplay videos. It seems like most of the emphasis was placed on slower weaponry.

Not really, Long Swords are very fast, combo intensive weapons that emphasize attacking rapidly to get the most out of it. Sword and Shield afford mobility, the ability to block, and the ability to use items with the weapon drawn (a quality no other weapon in the game shares). The weapon's speed affords it high elemental damage output, as well as excellent status ailment affliction (which is extremely useful online). Hammers are like precision-guided bombs. You have to plan your strikes ahead of time to get the most out of them, but they are extremely powerful when used well.

I've played this series since near its inception. It's definitely one of those types of games where watching someone else playing it, and then playing it for yourself are two entirely different things. Each weapon brings something unique to the table, and it's something that they done moreso with on 3 than they have on any of the prior titles. Each weapon contributes something unique that makes it useful. Just because you don't happen to see any videos of certain weapon types doesn't mean they aren't useful, or that there is emphasis on one weapon type over another. They're all balanced out.
