Capcom to get their own PSN storefront, other publishers to follow photo

In early November, Capcom expects their new digital storefront to launch on the PlayStation Network. This will be the first digital storefront on the PSN. After the success of Mega Man 9, Capcom is surely seeing the promise that digital distribution holds.

According to John Diamonon, product manager for Capcom's digital titles, Sony came to them with the idea. He states that Capcom is "supporting PlayStation Network like no other company."

Diamonon also revealed that other publishers will offer similar digital storefronts in the future, though no names were mentioned.

Christian Svensson, VP of business development and strategic planning for Capcom wants similar things for his company on Xbox Live, but feels that "they're not there yet."

"As far as Microsoft goes--how can I say this diplomatically--there are things I think they'd like to do to promote content in multiple ways, and I think they'll get there eventually... but they're not there yet."

For the gamer, brand-specific storefronts mean an easier way to find that company's titles. For the company, a store means greater visibility, which will probably equal greater sales. Hopefully, this will mean more digital titles. We all win then, right?

Diamonon Digi-volve to.... Diamondamononmon.

Yeah, but anyway, ps3 looking rather good lately. Maybe another price drop will convince me to pick one up.

Capcom has really been on a roll with digital content lately: first with Bionic Commando Re-armed, and then with Mega Man 9. If they continue on this path (which seems to very well be the case, judging from the Marvel vs. Capcom 2 rumor), they may very well take all of my money.

Branded ministores eh? I can't tell if this is cool or a usability nightmare waiting to happen

I don't usually look for a game based on it's brand, so this isn't going to draw my attention much. Good for Capcom though.

Could this be a lead in to Marvel vs Capcom 2?

@ Niero

I'm not sure how it will work out, but I can at least attest that navigating the Playstation Store is a hell of a lot easier/more visually appealing than Marketplace, so I'm glad Capcom decided to go with PSN before XBLA to try this. I'd say that, looking at the PS Store, if anybody could make something like this easily usable, it would be Sony.

That's great and all but where the hell is my SF2 HD? Summer 08 came and went, October is almost over.

I'm now seriously wondering if SF4 will release on consoles before the REMAKE of a game from the early 90's is released.

This will blow, I don't want to have to search by company, I'll still be searching weekly by newest content. On the plus side, it will be easier to boycott EA's bullshit DLC! (Burnout excluded :D )

awesome? capcoms been releasing quite a few high quality games via psn/xboxlive so i'm happy to see them getting their own storefront and i'm sur ei'll be downloading more from them in the future. This also brings a smile to my face when i hear them say that microsoft just isn't there yet kinda makes you remember that although psn is lagging behind xboxlive there are things which is does do better and i look forward to seeign it improve as a whole as time proceeds

As long as I can still search new releases I am fine with this! I'm not to worried about checking up on the Capcom page every week.

@Calkulon:

Who said you would HAVE to search by company? I'm sure the original PSN store is completely unchanged.

I am sure its much like the wii option in that one can browse according to publisher... they would never substitute one for the other...

as for this idea, i am totally for it because capcom have a strong reputation and an amazing understanding of what classic games are about. I do not need to go on about my obsession with bionic commando rearmed... and as pathetic as it sounds, this may get me to put megaman 9 on the shopping list... i can see i will be needing a larger hardrive....

@Tino:

Did you not see the words after that? About me still searching by latest content? Yeah I shouldn't have used the word 'have' but it's pretty clear I don't believe that'll be our only option in the future.

Something about this troubles me a little bit. Is this the direction Sony will be going in for future PSN storefront content? I have a fear that eventually the front page of the PSN store will be nothing but a list of huge popular publishers. This could make it a lot more difficult to find games from smaller, lesser known publishers who don't have their own front page section.

They do the same thing in the videostore. I was wondering how long it'd take for the same idea to permeate the games store. I think it's a good idea. I hope this encourages more content from more developers/publishers who want to put games online with no size restrictions.

So what happens to the lesser known indie developers? I'm assuming of course, that upstarts that don't have as robust a portfolio won't be getting their own storefront, which is a shame because those are the ones who need the spotlight the most.

This will totally rock if companies jump in and actually bring all their old school games for sale. I for one will purchase a bunch of old school games playable on the ps3. If they are categorized by company, that would make my search even easier.

Hey Sony you know what could be even easier for when you have massive loads of games, have a search bar on the psn, so we can type for the titles. Come on u know you can do it, you have Google on your side, use them!

This is awesome! I buy stuff off of PSN all the time. There are a lot of fun games. To hear about a big company like Capcom doing well because of good games makes me happy.

I hope to see other companies doing the same. Konami has a lot I'd like to see from them. Remake/rerelease a few classics to get some buzz going for the new games coming, get their own storefront up to advertise their other offerings. A lot of good things could come from this.

The more quality games at my fingertips, the better. That is, until we start seeing an overflow of craptastic board games and puzzlers, hehe.

I really dig PSN. And I think adding another way to search the content can only make it better. Good job Sony. And thanks for the great games, Capcom! You keep making them and I'll keep getting them - from your new little store, no less.

I think I got my PS3 at the right time. Cheap games, loads of new firmware features, and PSN store is criminally easy to buy from (compared to the Wii Shop)
