Capcom speaks on how Okami for Wii came to be photo

There has been much to-do about Okami's Wii incarnation, from excitement over its announcement to cynicism bordering on elderly crankiness in regards to the Wii version being more or less a port. Whatever your take, if you have any interest in the title whatsoever, this bit on Capcom's blog may be of interest for your Friday reading.

Here's a thoughtful snippet:

After seeing the repeated requests, we started thinking seriously about some of the factors that had gone into Okami’s prior performance (at least in the West, I can’t speak for Japan). One of the major ones (and certainly not the only one), as we saw it, was where Okami arrived in the PS2 lifecycle. Having done the analysis in the past of in which years new IP performs best (and worst), it’s not surprising that it’s not later in the hardware lifecycle, where the active consumers tend to be more price and brand sensitive. But here we were shipping a beautiful, but new and creative title on the PS2 in a year where the 360 had already been on the market for many months and the PS3 and Wii were about to launch. It’s unfortunate that beauty and creativity aren’t always rewarded by the market, but that’s the reality.

I hate thinking about Clover Studios going down right after a game like this, but the blogger has a point with his last sentence. At any rate, it's interesting to sneak a peek into the process of bringing the game to life on the console it seemed suited for anyway. I personally believe the title could be much more fulfilling to play on the Wii, so I'm looking forward to it, port or not.

If it comes out at a budget price like RE4 did then who cares if it's a port. I never played the PS2 version which still costs about $35. :)

Anyone have an release date on this yet or is it too far away? I didn't play this on PS2 so I'm really anxious to see what all the fuss is about.

Okami is a beautiful game and it will do wonders on the Wii. I'm sure of it.

I never played it in its original form, but what irks me is that Capcom does not want to add to the experience of Okami in terms of content. Another worrying thing is the controls. Sure, Okami Wii will have more waggle - but will that work? Will the Wii Remote + Nunchuck add to or diminish the gameplay?

I'm still looking forward to Okami, but I am definitely going to wait for reviews.

The Wii is actually nothing more than a plastic alternate to jacking off. Although fun at first it gets old with time. The games are as simplistic as the old Nintendo game councol. Everyones just flipping their lids cuz they can actually move their character/enviroment with their hands instead of their fingers. Quit supporting the Gooks making crap to sell to us Americans! God think about it! The games are stupid (played em') and theres really no more entertainment value then just playing with yourself :) food for thought

gheko, to be quite honest everything is made in another country. America is no longer a production country, but rather a service country. We don't make the stuff, we just know how to sell it. It also reminds me of a joke about American products.

A father figure is pissed off at the idea that other countries are making the products his wife and kids enjoy, so he declared this year to give gifts made in America, for Americans. So that he did. He gave his wife a bag of processed bovine feed, for his daughter he gave a pair of cement blocks and for his son, a box of Q-Tips.

Whatever, Gooks make awesome games. Americans make... Madden.

Actually... they don't. Isn't "Gook" typically reserved for Vietnamese people? If you're going to be a bigot, do it right or don't do it at all.

Never mind, just don't do it.

Just keep the controls good and tight, and I'll probably pick this up, having never purchased the PS2 version.

It was no accident that I typed, in response to nuclear gheko's post, "Thanks for the racism and the ignorance you just exhibited!"

Hey! I'm vietnamese! I'm offended! Acutally, not too much, sure Nuclear Gheko loses all credibility for the rest of his life, but I don't care too much since this is the internet.

For my sake, I hope he's being sarcastic.

Anyway, good article.

Nice to get a dose of Capcom's mighty brain on Wii Okami. I feel Capcom are still set to clean up on this one.

Gecko, get a grip. Do you complain where water comes from when it rains on you? Kind of pointless being anal about such things.

Wii is what it is. An industry changing piece of kit. Problem is many in the industry have gotten fat on the well laden industry table for yaers, and the change to get their brains and bodies back in action seesm to much for them. Many still doubt Nintendo's philosophy on the industry and yearn for that safe warm blanket again.

The blanket they hope to keep them warm again, is no doubt Sony's, but that's not working out too great so far, especially so when they see DS and Wii bringing in new and varied customers from no where. Were it not for the third space of 360, many of these developers would be on their knees and have no choice but Wii.

You can diss Wii and Nintendo til the cows come home in a happy meal, but its only them who are making a profit.
