See that? That's Abel from Street Fighter IV. Or it was, anyway. This week's update to the Super Street Fighter IV dev blog gives us, among other things, a look at what the Frenchman could have been if the team had stuck with the original concept.
Battle Planner Taisaku Okada says that Abel was intended to convey the idea that the weak could defeat the strong, and was thusly conceived as "A small Judo character, who could be mistaken for a girl."
I dunno about "mistaken," that just looks like a girl to me. Either way, even a trap or reverse-trap character would still have been more interesting than the Abel we actually ended up with. I still think Abel is one of the most boring characters in all of videogames, let alone the Street Fighter universe. Which version do you prefer?

Three awful characters and one decent one (C. Viper) that doesn't even make up for it.
Do people complain that Ryu's outift is too boring? Of course not, because it suits him as a fighter. So why should Abel be any different?
Maybe the concept of judo eludes you.
"Amnesia".. Really Capcom?
But then I realized that when you get used to playing him he's easily one of the most fun characters in the game, due to the constant use of his mixups and mindgames and his impressive to look at combos. Particularly the Abel vs Abel matchup is SUPER fun if both players have a general understanding of how to use him and utilize his rolls and BnB combos/mixups.
Similar to the way Sakura turned out, most of her game is also in the mindgames and mixups. Somebody who really knows how to use Sakura can really mess your shit up. Crouch fierce to EX shunpukyaku, jump in the air and hit them with like light kick or something, which resets them and makes them land standing on their feet. It makes it so once you both hit the ground (if you did it right) it's 100% ambiguous which side Sakura landed on, leaving the opponent in a 50/50 situation on which direction to block, to expect to tech a throw, etc. And if they guess wrong then its crouching jab, crouch fierce, ex shunpu allll over again and that will probably lead to stun.. etc etc etc. These mixup character styles have always been in the Street Fighter series. I mean look at Urien, Yun, and particularly Balrog in Super Turbo.
In the end I do like the way Abel turned out, and I hope they expand on his relationship with Charlie and Guile.
Though I hope to high hell that Charlie doesn't make it in/waste a spot in SSF4.
Girl Abel is pretty cute tho.
even if she is a boy.
no homo.
No. There will be NO exchanging anyone for Juri! Not on my watch.
That's Ryu. TYVM.
My rage was more directed at terrible characters in 4, namely Rufus. I understand the concept of judo.
Pay attention to your storylines, kids. Ryu is awesome. Always has been. As for his design, think about his origins. All the characters in the first Street Fighter (no, not SFII) were boring, it's not poor Ryu's fault. He's THE original character, he's allowed to have a boring outfit.
RAB, stop giving away my secrets.
This is pretty cool though.
of course I don't really like the design of any of the new characters so that could also sway my opinion. I'm sure much like SF3, I'll learn to love the design but right now I think all 4 look awful with abel looking the best just because of his conservative design.
That said, bring on Makoto.
Abel needs more defending that he gets. Along with El Fuerte (minus that chef bullshit) they're the only half decent designs in SFIV. With a little more work they could have been part of II and not had anyone bat an eye. But we get people who want SNK to turn into SF because they think it's "boring". "Boring" apparently creates characters who stand the test of time. I'd like V to be "boring".
P.S. "Boring" means inspired design that has a respect for actual fighters (like II and the better I,EX, and III characters).
That said, I would have liked the character model. Abel is cool, but so is this character. Probably would have a somewhat different play-style at the very least due to collision detection.
Oddly, though, I find Ken to be awesome. Can someone explain that for me, please?
SF always need more girl since everyone's Ryu Clones.
@NihonTiger90
Ken wears red and has does an extra roll on his back throw. *explained*
Still makes me wonder if the Abel we have now is actually a chick, cause that image had me fooled.
