The company that blocked out your teen years with Street Fighter II stamped their logo on a new Kenichi based anime fighting game, and expecations are already through the roof. The cell shaded characters dominate the screen, set in sandbox that combines a 3D set with a foreground of classic 2D technical-style fighting that a lot of us miss. Gaffers were quick to compare it to Rival Schools, which is a tough act to follow. It also has something in common with Dead or Alive. Is it cold in here?
The game features a dozen varied characters galvanized in stereotypical anime archetypes. For example, you have the super muscular bearded guy over 50, the young hotheaded guy of modest means, the anatomically generous and gravity defying heroine dressed like a total slut but nobody makes reference of it, and of course the one track bad guys that look like they've been shooting roids since birth. Check out the Japanese site for a sneak peek. We can only hope it delivers in the end, becomes available as a solid port, and inches them one step closer to Street Fighter 4. The fighter genre is dead -- if anyone can bring it back, it's Capcom. Guess we'll have to wait and see what Famitsu thinks for now. The game is slated for Spring 2007.
