Capcom's stocks get a boost from the Wii photo

Capcom's stocks just hit a five-year high on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and it looks like this has something to do with wiggle wands and Raccoon City.

It seems that Capcom (and its stock holders) are banking on the success of upcoming Capcom titles developed for the Nintendo Wii. Bloomberg says that Capcom stock rose 6.3 percent to 2,855 yen, its highest close since Sept. 26th, 2002. Shares have climbed 14 percent over the past two days and 33 percent this year.

Capcom expects sales to increase 11 percent this year as they've doubled the number of Wii games to six, which includes titles like We Love Golf and Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles.

There's a lot riding on the Resident Evil name, but Resident Evil 4 Wii edition sales numbers show that RE is a good fit for Nintendo's console. This game was among the top 10 titles sold in Japan and the U.S. in June.

Resident Evil's Wii edition has continued to sell well,'' said Jay Defibaugh, an analyst at Credit Suisse Group in Tokyo who rates Capcom shares "outperform.''

Also, thoughts: Cowzilla's C-blog has an interesting take on Capcom's Nintendo love and how it has finally paid off from the Gamecube days.

How many people are going to have to point out that developing for the Wii is akin Scrooge McDuck inviting you to his money bin and saying 'take it, take whatever you want!' before we actually start getting some proper games for it. I hope that the companies who have failed during the launch period and are still failing to realise that the Wii is pure gold fire whoever is responsible for making those sort of decisions.

RE4 on the Wii is fantastic. I'm burnt out by the current Wii library, but Leon Kennedy's excusion on the little white box is a shining beacon of light amongst mediocrity.

@comradetrotskii:

My gut says that most of the major publishers probably assume that the only games that really sell on Nintendo systems are Nintendo games, thus they are reluctant to create a 'big budget' game as it'll never go onto sell more than 400k units.

Look at the sales figures. It's a pretty true statement. :-/

iNFERNO: I totally agree with that assessment. Nintendo's brilliance at making games has also been one of its biggest weakness' simply because the third parties know they can't compete on the same level. But what exactly have they been competing with for the last year? Zelda, Metroid and Paper Mario? Three games? I haven't bought a game for Wii since Resident Evil 4. I am fucking desperate for a big title (please note I'm in Europe and as such do not yet have SPM or MP3). Ubisoft capitalised massively by actually releasing (fairly shite) games. The Wii is now clearly the dominant platform this gen and the sales of Zelda, MP3 and REWii show that there is still a significant 'hardcore' (god I hate that term) buying the system. Publishers need to take note.

Resident Evil + Nintendo = pure win.

We saw it with Resident Evil 4 (TWICE! I mean... c'mon!), and we'll see it with any other they develop for it. If I had a Wii, I'd sure as hell have a nice RE collection starting.

While we're here is there any substance to the rumours regarding the other Resi games being remade[i.e. ported with waggle 'n' shit] to the Wii. i'll take me some Code Veronica if you don't mind.

@Comradetrotskii: Great points. And I believe that Red Steel did pretty well (More than 500k, I believe) and I think that the EA titles will also do fairly well also. I'm just saying - I think that is most 3rd parties reasoning.

I am really ok with not getting RE5 on the Wii, as long as we get another new RE4 like game on the Wii in it's place.

RE5 for the Wii, 360, and PS3 = one game.

RE5 for the 360 and PS3 + RE2 remake o(r some other RE4 like game) for the Wii= TWO games.

Which would you prefer we get in the next year?

I'd rather see a built-from-the-ground-up original RE game that isn't a port of RE5. It's going to look like shit compared to the 360 and PS3 versions, so why not just make a new game built on a suped-up version of the RE4 engine. And a real survival horror game, not a rail shooter.
