Capcom's Keiji Inafune talks Mega Man, Dead Rising, and hamburgers photo

As a rule, I don't like to post links to hugely popular, hugely corporate sites like 1up. It's a great site and all, but I just don't think they need the extra exposure. I make exceptions for interviews like this one, where Keiji Inafune calls out the Dead Rising for being "incomplete" and its development team for doing "a decent job (at) making an American-style hamburger, but it still remained somewhat a Japanese-tasting hamburger". Not only is it validating to hear that I'm not the only one that thinks that Dead Rising is awesome but flawed-tasting, but there is also talk here of Dead Rising 2, Mega Man 10, Mega Man Legends 3, and the potential for a new Strider.

The only bad news to be found in the interview is that Keiji seems to have no interest in reviving any of the series that Clover Studios produced for Capcom, which means chances of a new God Hand, Viewtiful Joe, or Okami are slim. Maybe Capcom is just waiting for Platinum Studios (which used to be Clover Studios) to end their exclusive deal with Sega, with hopes that then they'll come back to Capcom to work on their old franchises. I know that's what I'm hoping for, because after playing as Joe in Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, I've never been more hungry for a viewtiful-tasting hamburger.

oh come ON Inafune! the guy has worked on Megaman for how long? how many times can you make a disappearing block puzzle before it starts to get old?!
I would rather see a new God Hand/Viewtiful Joe game than MM10 or MML3.
but Strider? oh damn, now that got me wet.

Wait you've played Tword versus Capcom?

Rumors I've heard was that the Dead Rising engine was intended for Mega Man Legends.

Great read, tasty info. Next-next gen Strider would kick my ass. Inafune is a gaming god.

Jonathan, I'm sorry to break it to you, but neither Viewtiful Joe or Okami lit up the sales charts, so I highly doubt Capcom will green light more games from those series. I can't vouch for God Hand, don't know if it was successful sales-wise, but the other two were definitely not.

It's a shame, but that's the cold, hard truth.

Although, it is worth noting that Capcom seems to have some sort of boner for Viewtiful Joe, as it did spawn a sequel and some other spin-offs. I guess we can always hope...

All these videogame based hamburger metaphors are making me hungry! Of all the videogame industry folk, Inafune is easily one of the most respectable. Too much spin and talk-arounds get tiresome after a while. (Take a hint Nintendo.)

Strider in 3D would be just like DMC, as far as I can tell. This is not a bad thing, but it's not a good thing either. We alreadyy have a DMC and a Ninja Gaiden. I don't see how they could make it unique and interesting but also 3D unless...

...HD 2D downloadable Strider CONFIRMED!!

A new Mega Man Legends would amazing. A new Okami, V. Joe, or God Hand would be even better!

Viewtiful Joe 3 on current-gen hardware... holy fucking shit that game would look absolutely gorgeous. Okami? my eyes would burn by it's beauty. What are you waiting for Platinum? DO IT!!!!

Nah, I don't want a new Mega Man game right now. Maybe in another 5 years maybe, but not soon...

That had entirely way too many burger metaphors for my liking, but I can see what he's saying. I still believe that, despite some flaws, Dead Rising on 360 was an excellent game coming from a Japanese developer, but I'm really interested to see how they collaborate with a Western developer. (Because, come on, directly commenting on those "rumors" in so much depth pretty much confirms it.) Capcom seems like one of the few Japanese developers who really "gets" current-gen game development in an international environment and is willing to take the steps necessary to learn from (currently farther advanced) Western developers. I just hope Dead Rising 2 won't lose a certain Japanese tone that I found to be a central theme of Dead Rising; that is, a distanced viewpoint and critique of American culture and stereotypes nestled beneath saving all those dumbass survivors and killing the psychopaths.

@ EDS

God Hand bombed pretty terribly, and even though it remains a cult favorite, getting a 4 from IGN probably really hurt its sales. (I still intend to try it sometime.)

IGN gave is a 3 actually and that was because they sucked at it and couldn't get past the first stage.

I won't hold my breath for a sequel even though I really want one.

If you couldn't tell from my avatar, the fact that Capcom seem interesting in reviving Strider makes me very happy.

Then I immediately became sad because my favorite video game character is not getting the third game he was suppose to get(the first two games said it would be a trilogy).

Anyone else surprised Capcom has half the staff of Namco Bandai or Square Enix? I always considered Capcom a giant. I mean.. Mega Man, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Street Fighter, Breath of Fire... not to mention Strider, the Clover games, Final Fight, etc...

I seriously think Capcom might be my favorite major video game company. Blizzard and Nintendo (as a software developer, not hardware!) are fantastic, but the former is too small and the latter does make enough hardcore games anymore. Square used to be a favorite, but I really don't care for many of their releases these days.

I would pay all my money for a new BoF and MML game. I, too, have played Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, and seeing Rock Volnutt in all his armored glory has made me jones for a new MML so hard it hurts.

And the fact that we got another Vs. game that has no BoF characters in it made me jones for a new one of those too.
