It's just not frightening anymore.
Ever notice how many shitty movies release each year in comparison to AAA blockbusters? It's because studios simply cannot afford to release nothing but blockbusters, so they have to produce popcorn sellers to maintain funding for the really good stuff.
It's the same thing in the video game industry... only reversed. AAA games make a real profit allowing companies leeway to experiment. The problem is Eastern developers don't experiment a whole lot anymore. They stick to tradition and franchises. While niche games may be some of the most interesting games out there, they simply don't move enough units to keep a mega publisher like Capcom afloat, so they don't bother trying anymore.
Whether you agree or not, money doesn't lie.
More on topic, fuck Capcom. I can't stomach RE anymore, there's just too much over the top anime bullshit going on. Resident Evil is dead, long live Dead Space.
Nope. Not at all.
"He conceded that Resident Evil doesn't need to be a straight action game, and the goal is to have games that retain the series' identity"
Activision: Sell you the same game 5 years in a row with minor changes at $60 each.
Ubisoft: PC gamers are thieves so to protect our sales we hurt the customers by giving drm that makes the product inferior to what you can get for free by pirating.
Capcom: No MegaMan Legends 3, Resident Evil will never return to it's roots, we're gonna make fighting games and tons of DLC and then we're gonna release the same game with a couple new things and call it "Super-" whatever you just bought so that you might go and buy it again.
EA: Origin spyware, try to defeat Activision by copying them or "stealing" CoD's audience even in genre's that aren't shooters.
It overall seems like too much looking at charts and graphs and saying "This sells nowadays" or "We need to make the most money by cutting out this". Gone are the days of artistic freedom in the industry, as evident here.
I could have sworn Resident Evil identified itself as a survival horror series. You can only push the action so far before you lose that, and RE5 was already one step over the line.
Are you shitting me?
"believes Resident Evil 6 needs to be more of an action game to perform satisfactorily at retail."
Translation: We want to make money like Cock of Doody did.
I used to buy Resident Evil for survival horror.
I hope they realize they've alienated a part of their fan base by changing what once was good and golden.
I think that's the point, that Capcom want a part of the Call of Duty action crowd pie, theres a lot more gold to be made with the itchy trigger finger crowd!
Newsflash: NO game has Call of Duty's sales numbers. Don't chase after the market that already is tapped; cater your game to the market eager to buy something in the genre they love and adore.
Hell, Wii Sports sold more than Resident Evil games in the past. Should we turned the franchise into a family-friendly party game?
No, Dead Space is the very definition of action-horror. There is nothing survival about it. After a few upgrades Isaac is basically a walking tank. It's a very good game, but action-horror nonetheless.
RE4 best walked the line between action and survival, and that should be tone Capcom is aiming for, not father in the direction of RE5 and Dead Space. RE deserves its own identity. It shouldn't be another "me too" action game with zombies.
i mean they have the name "Resident Evil" and "Biohazard" im sure people will recognize that through brand name, and went they do surprise everyone, the interest will suddenly sky rocketed and it might encourage other developers to purse this genre.
oh well at least i have my Deadly Premonition :P
No, I didn't say I'd rather, i said it depends. Controls are subjective to the game. I liked re4 and dead space just fine.
Stop getting all butthurt that I don't like your game for legitimate reasons. It happens dude.
You know what gets those numbers? CALL OF DUTY, its in the minds of gamers, its built in a way that it appeals to as many people as humanly possible, Capcom stuff will NEVER sell that many copies.
"I really do hate to see survival horror become niche, because it's one of my favorite genres."
I really do get what your dishing out man, but it was already niche before it fell into being a hard sell.
@Article
I want to say "bullshit" because I'm a lifelong fan of the old ways but I'm sure they're right about this one. Honestly though I'm still failing to see why the games couldn't be as action oriented as they are without letting up on the suspense. All the holes are there, all you need to do is plug stuff into them.
Just take a look at how the gaming industry has behaved the last couple of years and you will see an obvious trend. And I am talking about the industry as a whole.
Just to note a few key words: Motion control, 3D, MMO, Free-to-play, Casual market
Just think about these topics and look up/think about how the industry has reacted to them in the last 5 years.
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
"A 'survival horror' Resident Evil doesn't seem like it'd be able to sell those kind of numbers"
He should get a job in bank or something.
Jesus, I've gone off-topic.
That said, just because Capcom has steered away from pure horror in their main titles doesn't mean they couldn't have tried to make a few smaller scale RE titles that were more horror-orientated and aimed for that niche of pure horror fans. They've avoided that mostly because they seem more interested in selling as much as possible of a game as opposed to targeting niche demographics, and that's about corporate strategy more than product viability.
