Capcom profits down, Street Fighter X Tekken sales lagged
The latest fiscal report from Capcom has a few pleasant surprises, but also has its share of rough spots. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City moved around 1.7 million units worldwide. That bodes well for the more action-oriented Resident Evil 6 set to release later this year. Monster Hunter 3G had an even more impressive showing, moving 1.6 million units in Japan alone. Not bad for a handheld adaptation of a 2 year old Wii game with a highly questionable marketing campaign.
Still, overall profits for the company were down 13.8%, perhaps in part due to the sales of Street Fighter X Tekken. With 1.4 million discs shipped, the game is currently 600,000 units shy of Capcom's projected goal of 2 million in sales. Pretty disappointing for a crossover between the two most popular fighting game franchises on the planet. Speaking of crossovers, it doesn't look like Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 has sold its first million yet. That's got to be discouraging.
I think Street Fighter X Tekken and Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 are great games, but they were both PR nightmares in their own ways. I really hope this teaches Capcom to not give certain consoles a free head start on 5-17 DLC characters, to stop with this on-disc DLC propostion, and to never again release a huge, retail-based update to a game that's less than a year old. Having great games will only do so much for you when the consumer ends up feeling burned every time they buy one.
