Capcom prez says 'Moar game movies comin!' photo

While Resident Evil isn't my favorite game-turned-film (that honor goes to Silent Hill), I certainly enjoyed the first film enough to speak positively of it after seeing it. Not being obsessed with Resident Evil however, I'm sure many details that would have annoyed fans of the series flew over my head. Sadly, the tough chick tactic worked flawlessly on me -- I thought Milla was a badass and I wanted more of that.

Apparently, I wasn't alone on that, as the Resident Evil films did well enough in theaters to make Capcom decide they wanted more opportunities to squeeze money out of their fans. Capcom's president, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, has revealed that the company is chatting it up with Hollywood studios and recieved several offers at the recent Cannes Film Festival.

Tsujimoto also said "We want to do with games what Marvel did with comics" in reference to all the popular films based on Marvel characters.

We already know about Street Fighter and Onimusha, although the latter hasn't made it to production yet. Bloomberg Television, the source for the Tsujimoto quotes, directly mentions Devil May Cry, but Tsujimoto did not specify that a film based on that game would be made. My mind wanders directly to Mega Man. I hope I'm alone in that ... I'm not sure I ever want to see a real guy dressed in that little blue suit.

Ugh...megaman would be horrible. If anything give us final fight, with enough ass-kicking who gives a damn if it's faithful to the game

I'd love a Megaman movie if it were done right. That is to say, not cheesy.

I know they announced a DMC movie years ago but it blantly disappeared under the radar.

If they don't hurry up with trying to get Takashi's schedule open for a Onimusha movie, you'll have him being too old or something. Either way, I want a Onimusha movie NAOW.

Resident Evil...not so much. The first movie was the only [i]passable[/b] movie to me. 2 and 3 were pretty bad. I thought it was pretty obvious another RE movie was coming on how they ended it.

Megaman...make it a hot ass CG, change it to the Jap name Rockman, and we're good.

If a Mega Man movie was ever made, it should be dark and edgy since that's the cool thing to do in movies nowadays.

I liked Resident Evil 1 and half of Resident Evil 2. When thy brought out Nemesis, it went downhill. So I am all for a good Resident Evil film (good or campy), like Degeneration.

Oh, and they already made a Mega Man/Devil May Cry movie. They call it Casshern.

Wow, Dick McJustice though the Silent Hill movie was based on SH2? I don't remember James looking for his daughter in Silent Hill...

John Hurt is Dr. Wily... Miley Cyrus is Roll... Matthew Fox is Protoman... The Rock is Cutman... And Shia Lebeouf is MEGA MAN!

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to shoot myself in the face.

Colette, I was just wondering what the RE and SH movies did so well that you couldn't imagine a Bioshock movie doing as well or better.

No disrespect, just curious.

F Whipple, LoL at the thought of a Final Fight movie. That would be spectacular if it was just 90 minutes of fight scene to fight scene. I'm talking balls to the wall, in your face beat downs. Haha! I would line up at the doors to see that movie.

I think we're all missing a great Capcom franchise that could work good (or at least, better than most games) as a movie: Phoenix Wright.

Seriously, I think it could work. Although I suppose it might work better as an anime movie or something like that.

I can see monster hunter or dmc being good candidates. Maybe megaman, only if they use his jpn name rockman and stay true to the story, atmosphere and especially music. Who am I kidding, Hollywood would totally screw that up.
Hopefully they would not consider 1942 since we already have as much ww2 movies as the fps genre. Final Fight could be really entertaining if they made it something like this....

Even though the RE movies didn't follow the video game elements to a tee, I thoroughly enjoyed them, flaws/lack of logic and all. Milla is just a believable badass that I was able to overlook some of the terrible parts.

A definite yes! to a real life Mega Man movie. Vin Diesel as Mega Man.

Hell yeah. Zack and Wiki animated would be fun.

@Roody

Pheonix Wright as an old school Disney 2D epic would be full of win. Or live action even. That could work . . .

Didn't Final Fight's continue screen have the characters beaten and tied up with a bomb counting down? If they start the movie off with that, then flash back to the beginning with nothing but fight after fight then it would be awesome.

It's sad that we all love the same megaman, yet we haven't seen a new release in a format that any of us really enjoy (afaik). The collections don't count, those are just old games repackaged. I'm talking about a whole new megaman game that is as fun and challenging as the versions we had on nes and snes...

Colette, let me just say that I love what you do here. I mean that from the bottom of my heart. With that said, you and I need to have a nice, long chat about those Resident Evil movies. Sure, I'll give you the first RE movie. It was a good zombie flick. But once I saw NINO (Nemesis in Name Only) and his goofy looking rubber mask, I felt like I just got roundhouse kicked in the junk.

As for what Capcom game should be made into a movie, I have but two words: Viewtiful Joe.

Thirded!

In other news: How about movies based on games that don't have silly plots/background stories. (I'm one of the few who liked the RE movies despite finding the games lacking in almost every department...Yes, I know the movies were dumb. But they had Milla.) Suggestions for cool game-related movies: Mechwarrior/Battletech, Deus Ex, Grim Fandango...all starring Milla. I don't care how you do it. Just, you know, DO IT!

I'll echo a couple other commentors' thoughts: the first Resident Evil movie was okay, the other ones were pretty terrible, primarily because they took a very Michael Bay-style approach to it. "You know what this movie needs? Super-powers!" Then they probably proceeded to do whatever stupid, over-the-top scenes they thought of and plummet straight into mediocre action and terrible everything else.

"You know what would be awesome? If the one chick, like, totally snapped a zombie's neck by twisting it!"
"Yeah! And we could seriously have the other chick kill some monster by backflipping off of a motorcycle and shooting the gas tank!"
"Brainstorm: what if we gave the main character psychic powers!?!?"

And the scene where Nemesis remembers his humanity (or some other blather) and saves Alice was probably the most cliched and falsely sentimental thing they could have done with the movie.

Can we ALL please stop this nonsense and just agree together that ALL movies based off of games will ALWAYS be terrible?

Sure, let these guys ruin even more game franchises with their mega awesome adaptations in movie form.

Nobody will ever make a good movie based off of a game. NEVER.

They should do another anime movie like SFII: The Animated Movie. That would have the best chance of succeeding.
