Capcom plans to increase release rate for Resident Evil photo

The games industry has had a rough year, and few publishers would know that better than Capcom. To help combat this, the company hopes to increase the output of titles in popular franchises, such as Resident Evil.

According to a report from Nikkei, Capcom is aiming to achieve a release rate of three to four titles yearly in its biggest IPs. This would be an increase of 30% over their current model. In order to reduce the development time on titles to achieve this goal, the Japanese publisher will continue its practice of outsourcing development to European and North American firms.

More games can be a good thing, but isn't that part of the problem we already have? Gamers have a lot of choice, far more than they ever have before, but the iterative nature of exploiting high-profile franchises has the effect of making product seem homogenized. I'm not sure if the solution should be foisting more product on wallets that are already feeling the pinch of a tough economy and already have games releasing at a rate faster than they can buy them.

How bout make one really good game instead of 3 shitty games? Also, don't make DLC unlock codes for content on the disc.

Excellent! The <i>just release more of this shit</i> strategy worked great for Guitar Hero!

BB Code fail. =(

It's so hard going back and forth between sites that all use different types of text code...

This is clearly going to fail. Resident Evil vs. Silent Hill, I'm calling it now. I just don't even understand the logic. "We have a few popular IPs now, so let's make sure to have untested new developers pump out titles 400% faster than before."

At least I'm looking forward to Mikami and Suda 51's new horror game.

I just don't know how the video game industry is in danger of catastrophic failure every single year, no matter what they do. With more annual sequels, DLC and GOTY re-releases, it just seems like they're making more money than ever before. It's hard for me to even trust what they say.

Hopefully Capcom will plan to increase the rate of zombies in the next Resident Evil game(s).

Yeah, lets focus on churning them out instead of quality...

To be fair, they took their time on RE5 and it sucked though. Maybe they can get better quality out of rushing.

That's actually a great idea since Resident Evil titles are always in great demand for another sequel.

The real problem is similar to activision's milk a genre, close a studio, profit. Capcom has always tried to please it's customers and fans alike.

Once we see less samiliar FPSs on consoles, more breathtaking gameplay then maybe the game world will be back to normal.

Btw, can I change my avatar from my PS3/Wii, or only on a PC/laptop? I don't like Mr. Destructoid calling me "Newb?" anymore :'(

Well... it'll be okay if they make some remakes of the three original games. Maybe a revisit to Gaiden since they're digging deep for money?

I'm sure they include DS, Wii, PS3, 360 games in there, perhaps a PSP game too. So that's like 1 title with multiple ports per year.

Not Resident Evil 5, 6,7 and 8 all in one year.

Yikes. This just screams quantity over quality. Hard times call eh?

But hey while they're at it maybe they could at least touch this PSP title thats supposed to come out this year but has no information released... at all.

Can't really fault them seeing as they only make money on fiscal years where they have their major franchises out. Compare the 2008 FY which saw both SFIV and RE5 and made ganbusters to the 2009 FY where they focused on new IPs and lost alot of money as a result.
Shinta 2's Avatar - Comment posted on 07/27/2010 04:24

@d3v: The only problem is that most of those new IPs were terrible because they shipped the projects off to other developers, like Dark Void, or Bionic Commando.

Now they're basically saying that they're going to try the same strategy, only decrease the amount of time they can work on it, and let them use their best IPs. It could easily backfire and weaken the prestige of the IP, much like what happened with Silent Hill.

What i'm hoping for is a Resident Evil Outbreak Files 3.
but hopefully something that follows the style of RE4 more with the over the shoulder camera but with alternate story lines for a selection of characters.
also
@Oishidesu Leon may not have someone stealing his ammo, but in his last console game he did have an annoying girl to get in the way and make the game more challenging overall, which isn't bad at all, im just saying: Ashley was good at getting in the way/killed/taken.

Whoever thought bionic commando was shit must be moking some pretty strong stuff, Bionic Commando was good, Resident Evil 5 was great, Street Fighter 4 was a dissapointment but the majority of Capcom's games are good. Why everyone thinks an increased rate of games will decrease quality I don't know, everyone is so cynical, I swear we are getting closer every day to the snobbery of the film industy.

I really hate how this has become more and more of a factory, trying to churn out as much as possible so that they make a profit.

More games and less diversity. Though if you're a fan of shooters you must be loving this generation. For me I was put off by Resi five, if they go back to the survival horror style then I'll buy them all.

They said they're aiming to release more titles a year, not necessarily decrease time it takes to make them (and "them" as in the main, numerical entries).

That means we can look forward to Resident Evil: Deadly Silence 2, another Wii on-rails "Chronicles" game, Outbreak File 3 and Resident Evil 5: Kinect Edition, all within the same year.

I want my Resident Evil 6 sooner than 2014.

I wouldn't mind HD remakes of RE 0-3 plus Code Veronica, but for gods sake fix the controls on the older games. I've tried to go back and play those on the Gamecube or Wii and I just give up after about five minutes of those clunky controls.

And yes, a HD remake of RE4 would be a huge win!

Oh Capcom... it's Better Games, not More Games. I've got more games than I can shake a stick at, but only 2 or 3 are actually worth my time and/or money.

And ya know, you CAN do well with a new IP. You just have to promote it properly... and well, make it not suck. See Dark Void, Rocketmen: Axis of Evil, SpyBorgs and - to a lesser extent - Zack & Wiki (Lesser extent because it was actually a good game, it just had no promotion) on how to do it wrong.

In a related story, Capcom also announced more patches to fix game breaking glitches and bugs caused by it's new rushed development cycle. Also, what Toneman said, that goes double for Wii releases Capcom.

This model already seems familiar to me with Resident Evil titles. First of all, they've been making several different versions of the same game with different Director's Cuts, versions with Wesker being in the game 5 minutes longer, and a port to every new system that comes out, etc. They've been milking the actual games, plus coming up with lesser quality spinoff games like Resident Evil Online (still a concept that should be refined), those retarded gun games, and so forth. This model is no different, other than Resident Evil's current story is worse than ever (Resident Evil 5 being the only version I didn't like the story and didn't bother finishing). I can't afford games right now anyway, so let them go ahead and be greedy. Maybe their next batch of games will end up in a landfill like Double Dragon 2 or E.T.

THAT MAKES SENSE INSTEAD OF REALSING 1 GAMES RELEASE 60 THE WORST PART OF IT IS THERE TO MANY GAMES BEING RELASED SPECIALLY HERE WHERE I LIVE WHERE COPIES USED TO RULE THE COUNTRY AND IT WAS LEGAL NOT ILLEGAL THE ONLY REASON PS3 HAS NO COPIES IS BECUASE OF DAMN BLUE RAY BUT ANYWAY. U HAVE GOT TO STOP REALASING SO MNAY GAMES EVERY YEAR IT GOES TO EVERY PUBLISHER ESPECIALLLLLLY ACTIVISION IT USE TO BE NORMAL WITH THE PS2 BECUASE THE GAMES WERE CHEAP EVEN THE ORIGINALS WERE CHEAPER BUT I DO LIKE BLUE RAY THE DISCS ARE BASICALLY UNBREAKABLE WHAT THEY NEED TO DO IS BRING THE PRICE WAY DOWN
