The games industry has had a rough year, and few publishers would know that better than Capcom. To help combat this, the company hopes to increase the output of titles in popular franchises, such as Resident Evil.
According to a report from Nikkei, Capcom is aiming to achieve a release rate of three to four titles yearly in its biggest IPs. This would be an increase of 30% over their current model. In order to reduce the development time on titles to achieve this goal, the Japanese publisher will continue its practice of outsourcing development to European and North American firms.
More games can be a good thing, but isn't that part of the problem we already have? Gamers have a lot of choice, far more than they ever have before, but the iterative nature of exploiting high-profile franchises has the effect of making product seem homogenized. I'm not sure if the solution should be foisting more product on wallets that are already feeling the pinch of a tough economy and already have games releasing at a rate faster than they can buy them.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I've been waiting for more shantae, zak and wiki, and killer 7!!!
*crickets*
It's so hard going back and forth between sites that all use different types of text code...
At least I'm looking forward to Mikami and Suda 51's new horror game.
I just don't know how the video game industry is in danger of catastrophic failure every single year, no matter what they do. With more annual sequels, DLC and GOTY re-releases, it just seems like they're making more money than ever before. It's hard for me to even trust what they say.
To be fair, they took their time on RE5 and it sucked though. Maybe they can get better quality out of rushing.
The real problem is similar to activision's milk a genre, close a studio, profit. Capcom has always tried to please it's customers and fans alike.
Once we see less samiliar FPSs on consoles, more breathtaking gameplay then maybe the game world will be back to normal.
Not Resident Evil 5, 6,7 and 8 all in one year.
But hey while they're at it maybe they could at least touch this PSP title thats supposed to come out this year but has no information released... at all.
Now they're basically saying that they're going to try the same strategy, only decrease the amount of time they can work on it, and let them use their best IPs. It could easily backfire and weaken the prestige of the IP, much like what happened with Silent Hill.
but hopefully something that follows the style of RE4 more with the over the shoulder camera but with alternate story lines for a selection of characters.

@Oishidesu Leon may not have someone stealing his ammo, but in his last console game he did have an annoying girl to get in the way and make the game more challenging overall, which isn't bad at all, im just saying: Ashley was good at getting in the way/killed/taken.
GET OUT OF MY OPPOSITE WORLD.
BC and RE5 were horrible for me and SF4 was brilliant.
Remake of Outbreak+smal subscription fee=win
why lower the overall quality of games in series:\
I really hate how this has become more and more of a factory, trying to churn out as much as possible so that they make a profit.
Capcom needs to make money FAST, Bionic Commando bombed, Dark Void bombed and Lost PLanet 2 bombed...
There was supposed leak of Resident Evil 4 HD Artwork for PS360s...
A long while back. *Fingers Crossed*
That means we can look forward to Resident Evil: Deadly Silence 2, another Wii on-rails "Chronicles" game, Outbreak File 3 and Resident Evil 5: Kinect Edition, all within the same year.
I want my Resident Evil 6 sooner than 2014.
And yes, a HD remake of RE4 would be a huge win!
And ya know, you CAN do well with a new IP. You just have to promote it properly... and well, make it not suck. See Dark Void, Rocketmen: Axis of Evil, SpyBorgs and - to a lesser extent - Zack & Wiki (Lesser extent because it was actually a good game, it just had no promotion) on how to do it wrong.
Thought they have been releasing a lot of fighting games recently. Not that its bad btw.
Seriously. I've always wanted to play through that game! Elza Walker.
