Capcom plans to 'develop new titles primarily in Japan' photo

After outsourcing a number of new titles to overseas developers, Japan-based Capcom is thinking about keeping it closer to home in the future.

In a recent financial conference call, company reps pointed to the Bionic Commando (developed by the now defunct Sweden-based GRIN) as a demonstration of the "difficulty of outsourcing" new title development. While Capcom realizes it can't flesh out its portfolio without overseas help, it does plan to change how these developers are used.

"We plan to develop new titles primarily in Japan," Capcom says. "Overseas companies may be used mostly to develop titles for existing game series with well-established characters and universal themes. Overseas companies will also handle certain parts and/or lineups of such games."

Canadian developer Blue Castle Games is currently at work on the sequel to 2006's Dead Rising, developed by a Japanese Capcom production studio. Capcom's newest IP, Dark Void, was developed by Airtight Games which calls the Seattle-area home.

Or simply be sure the game they publish doesn't suck.

So far Dead Rising 2 & Dark Void look good!!!
BTW Bionic Commando wasn't ALL that bad...

I wonder what's up with paranoid Capcom?
Trying to save face and redeem their franchises?
Maybe back to the swine flu scare / no show in the summer of 2009?

I hope they succeed. I really want to play games made from Japan that aren't JRPGs (Sorry, I'm not swayed by them like some people here are). Dead Rising and Lost Planet were steps in the right direction. If they keep taking that route, then I'm on board for anything they might pump out. Still though, Dark Void is one of my most anticipated games of 2010, and Dead Rising 2 looks great. Outsourcing isn't all bad.

I suppose Bionic Commando can be a case in point. Yeah it didn't suck, but it was far surpassed by the older remake.

@WarZombie

Not trying to be nit-picking or anything, but Capcom is probably one of the most universal Japanese publishers.

Outsourcing is what gave Donkey Kong and Metroid their resurgence, so I hope this isn't a permanent move. Also, pre-existing IPs help to provide steady income, but now I don't think we can look to Capcom for the Next Big Thing.

The PC version of Bionic Commando was one of my favourite games of the year.

I read this as, "CAPCOM to develop new Titties primarily in Japan."

I think they just want to keep hold of their properties. I loved Bionic Commando though well good.
Dark Void is only being published by capcom it's not really their property as some people on here seem to think.

@Rich Turner:

If it means anything, "Dark Void" (along with "Spyborgs") is a trademark of Capcom Entertainment, a subsidiary of Capcom USA. So I'm not so sure about that last statement, but I could be wrong.
