Capcom isn't going to abandon the UMD format just yet photo

Although Capcom is putting out fighting game Fate/Unlimited Codes as a digital download through the PlayStation Portable Store, rather than the typical release on UMD, the company is not abandoning the disc format ... yet.

"We certainly do not intend to stop supporting UMD," a spokesperson for Capcom Europe explained to MCV. "Certainly for us PSP is very important -- more so with Monster Hunter coming -- than maybe any other publisher."

With Patapon 2 and now Fate/Unlimited Codes being tested as digital downloads on the PSP, it certainly appears as if more and more companies are preparing for the transition to the oft-rumored UMD-less PSP Go!, doesn't it? As far as I'm concerned, the less gaming crap I have to carry with me on trips, the better.

I will stop gaming before I take any part in the DRM-infested hell that is download-only games.

Download only for $5 games is fine; I have no desire to not physically own my AAA titles.

I'm clashed with this one. I really am not a fan of online distribution, and I really would rather have a physical copy of whatever game I own.

However, I really dislike the UMD format. I'm careful with my games, so damage and breaking isn't really a factor. I just think that the format is not very effective, and the discs are pretty butt ugly.

I like physical media. It's physical.

I'm in the middle. I think DLC has a place now, especially with demos on consoles now a solid foundation, but I think that the industry shooting for this DLC only model is very shortsighted. I'd rather see the two co-exist. Ignore the needs of the customers at your peril. I do think demos need to be more accessible to hand helds though.

Try a title on as a DLC demo first, generate interest and see what happens, then print hard copies perhaps. If you want to battle piracy, meet your customers half way and reason with those who would pirate (like the devs of Zeno Clash recently did), give good free swag (art books, models etc, even if you have to send away for them) and we'll buy.

Another reason I don't dig this DLC angle is that, I'll no longer be able to buy/play import games like I do with GBA/DS/PSP games. Too much control for the man, will spoil the real underground fun of games. I understand them wanting to a stop piracy, but they are going about it the wrong way.

Capcom, if you guys get Capcom Classic Vol. 3 out, I'll so buy it. Bring the CPS2/3 love to my PSP. Get on it.

I'm completely on board with online distribution. Especially if it will slow down the piracy that is currently strangling the system. Plus it means less games I have to carry with me. I'll probably even rebuy many of the games I already own when they offer the digital version just to save battery life and travel space. I can't wait until they switch over, for me it is an all around win situation.

Will downloaded games be any cheaper? Since they're saving the cost of printing, shipping, and not having titles on the used game market.....and we get no 'not' be a collector with a physical copy and have our games have no resale value.

Loco Roco 2 was $20 and was UMD....shouldn't Patapon 2 be $18 or something?

A toss-up.

I prefer owning the physical discs. It proves I own the software.

I also enjoy running said paid games off of memory stick for quick access, fast loading, less baggage/juggling, more battery life, etc.

Perhaps devs should more frequently implement temp storage on the memory card instead?

Who doesn't love having a physical copy of the game? You get a cool box, instruction manual, and a shiny CD. Also, collector's edition are physical as well, and people love them.

@silvain

You don't technically own downloaded games either, they're licensed to you, non-refundable, and non-transferable in nearly all cases.

And if you think they'll be $5 for a license instead of the same high price as a physical copy, but with few if any prices drops, well...
