Capcom intentionally putting glitches in Mega Man 9 for nostalgic effect photo

This news is going to make you crazy retro gamers spunk up a treat, but Capcom has announced that it will be putting graphical glitches in Mega Man 9 to help you relive the glory days. Yes, deliberate (OPTIONAL) sprite flickers are yours to enjoy as the game pretends it cannot process all the information on the screen. Jesus, I bet some of you have erections right now after reading that, don't you? You retro gamers are weird.

"Yeah, there were some things, like you couldn’t have more than three enemies on the screen at once, so we had to make sure that that’s how it stayed in our game," explains Capcom’s Hironobu Takeshita. "In the part with the dragon with the flame, [there should be] flickering, and whatnot."

I personally find this whole thing slightly absurd, but I cannot fault Capcom's genius. The Mega Man 9 team are going to release a graphically prehistoric game, load it with intentional glitches on PURPOSE, and people are going to LOVE them for it. Capcom must be rolling on the floor and laughing until they throw up every time they see someone verbally fellating them for this.

It's genius, I tell you. Up next, Nokia to release old school mobile phones that are the size of housebricks. Retro fans scream "TAKE OUR MONEY!"

Now that's a little extreme - having an 8-bit game without slowdowns was one of the things I was looking forward to. Still, I can't wait for this game

Oh wow, I thought the gave was supposed to look crisp and run smoothly, with no flicker or slowdown. I don't mind flickering sprites on my NES games, but on XBLA or WiiWare I don't want to see that kind of shit anywhere near my DLC.

"Capcom's Hironobu Takeshita has told Gamasutra that players will have the option (literally, via the options menu) to introduce and adjust old-timey NES glitches like screen flicker."

Although I'm a retro fan through and through, I have always hated blinking sprites and slow downs. I'm sure it will be fine in Mega Male 9 though.

****ITS AN OPTION****

Aw come on man :(

Now there'll be people complaining about this . . . when they don't have to.

Takeshita noted that its going to be an option. *optional*

While I'll probably flip that on and love it for a few play through, seeing the game pull of its 8-bit sans flicker will probably be my method of choice.

***ITS AN OPTION****

But....that's why we have nice things now, to avoid flickers and such. Meh.

Jim, you should really note that it's an option in the game's menu and not required by any means. Personally, I won't use it, because as much as I love retro graphics, the flicker always annoyed the shit out of me.

So, you're saying it's an **OPTION**. That it's optional? Or, wait, maybe what you are truly saying is that the flickering sprites is optional?

Anyone getting the feeling that Capcom had an unreleased Megaman 9 gathering dust all these years until somebody had the great idea to release it as a "new" retro game? :-o

TAKE MY MONEY! But in all seriousness, I think its pretty cool. To everyone saying "glitches, in my XBLA?" I wonder...you are buying an 8-bit nostalgiafest and you complain about the style of the game? I think we take breaks on what to hate: Another megaman!?! 8-bit!?! Difficult!?! Glitches!?!

@ taterchimp

Don't forget that it's optional!

But yeah, you're on to something. However, I think the inconsistency is more down to how most people crave attention, and that the easiest way to get it on the 'net is to be a contrary douche-bag. Consistency isn't even a factor to people like that. They're out to rile people up, not have a serious discussion about the hobby.

Not everyone with a contrary opinion is like that, but then those who aren't usually don't act like dicks, so it's pretty easy to separate them from the attention seekers.

Home ports of danmaku shmups have been doing this for years (they call it "wait level" and allows whether large amounts of on-screen objects causes lag or not) but it's good that the new retro games have this level of authenticity.

Video games are all so technically advanced now, what with bloom and what not.
I mean even the re-done retro games have some wizardry behind them and they even need to use wizardry to make glitches now.
Yey for improving technologies

But thanks for making the glitches optional.
I'll probably do a few levels with on, just to relive the old days
