I don't want to surprise anyone, but gaming companies make big announcements at E3. I know, sit down and stay cool. One gaming company that will evidently be doing this is Capcom who it is now rumored will be announcing a sequel to one of their major franchises. The big twist? It will be in the hands of a Western developer.
Capcom has already gone on record saying that it won't be trusting new IPs to Western developers after Bionic Commando failed to relaunch and Dark Void flopped, but they are evidently willing to trust one of their major franchises to them. This rumor comes from Garnett Lee's latest Weekend Confirmed podcast, in which he discussed Capcom's trust in Western devs by saying, ""Boy, their E3 bombshell puts that to test. I'm not going to spill it because I don't want to make anyone mad, but boy their E3 bombshell puts that to test."
The two franchises that pop into mind for me are Resident Evil, which lost its previous director and Devil May Cry. I'd say it is most likely the former, but I don't know how that will work out for the franchise as it might mean that it will head even more towards the action stylings of RE5, and that would be sad.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Now, back to Red Dead.
Also, someothersite said that it can't be DMC cause the team who would work on it are working on another project. So, there's that. RE6 = too soon.
GRIN and Bionic Commando are a perfect example of this. Bionic Commando Rearmed put GRIN on the map because they adhered perfectly to the Bionic Commando formula with only updates to graphics and sound (and I believe a few original levels). Bionic Commando (2009) buried GRIN due to being too much of a deviation from the source material (and for the record, I loved Bionic Commando (2009)).
Imagine if an inexperienced western developer was given the reigns of Megaman simply because they were so passionate about the original series in their pitch to Capcom. You'd be taking the huge risk of exploiting all of your core fans with the adjustments in gameplay that would undoubtedly manifest simply because a different culture worked on the game. You might gain new or different fans, but at the end of the day, I say that it's a safer bet to just let the people who started something finish it in order to not alienate the fans than it is to mess with the formula for success. And at the same time, it only makes sense to give chances of working on new IPs to up and coming developers to let them cut their teeth on something that, 5 years from now, won't be a black eye on an otherwise decent track record of a franchise.
Unlikely if it's a western dev, but I'm guessing it'll be DMC
You're in grave danger of making too much sense. That's why I'm thinking 2.5D remake of Demon's Crest.
Whatever it really is, though, if Capcom's current track record is any indication, the single player experience will be marred by worthless AI companions.
;)
Actually, I hope it's news of RE:6! Although I was one of the few here who really, really loved RE:5, I'd really, really like to see zombies in the next installment. Real, flesh-eating zombies, please. =)
E3! Can't wait!
it's probably re6.
Darkstalkers! For the love of God, Please Darkstalkers 4!
"It will be in the hands of a Western developer."
Not Darkstalkers! For the love of God, Please Not Darkstalkers!
also i think technically darkstalkers/vampire savior is up to 5 now.
Fans: "RE5 was too western and actioney!"
Capcome: "RE6 will now be developed by a western company. >:D"
Something like Megaman Legends 3 would be fiting of that title.
:(
Oh boy! I sure can't wait to see what capcom has in store! I hope it's something lik-
">Being developed by another 3rd rate western developer."
Fuck this shit, I'm going home.
