In yet another in a growing line of computer-generated feature-length films based on videogame franchises, Capcom has announced that they will be releasing Resident Evil: Damnation in 2012. A follow-up to Resident Evil: Degeneration, another animated feature, Damnation will not only be animated, but in 3D. Capcom is collaborating with Sony on the project.
Did anybody here see Degeneration? I have to admit to having been curious when word first got out about its existence, but it's so difficult for me to work up the enthusiasm to watch this sort of thing. That should hold doubly-true for a Resident Evil film, where the tone of the games has always occupied (unsuccessfully, in my view) an uncomfortable territory between camp and horror and refuses to decide which it's going to be.
And don't get me started on the "uncanny valley" crap I inevitably feel watching CG animation that attempts realistic human figures. No patience for that in this house, thank you very much.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
If there's no Ada Wong, then I don't care about whatever it is.
That leaves me with:
RE2
RE4
Darkside Chronicles
Don't care about the Redfield or Jill Valentime. Leon's OK, he's the only one with interesting adventures.
I do have a weakness for Milla Jovavich, though, so I might go see Afterlife anyway. I need a movie right now.
This gimmick does not work, looks shitty and I give a damn next to so many
people about it. About another CGI Resident Evil Movie? At least they kept the
story KINDA with the ORIGINAL series... unlike other movies, which have almost
NOTHING together with the RE series.
But I got careful with saying "if Capcom made it, it will be alright"... after the crap we call Resident Evil 5. Reboot it or let it die, Capcom!
Heres hoping their next try is more entertaining.
Second: Never heard of Degeneration.
And the Resident Evil movies are about watching Milla kicking ass.
Shimmering from bright sources or things that are in the foreground. Also the foreground hurts my eyes for some reason. like I'm going cross eyed. and even though it looks 3D it still looks like a pop out book, sorta like a viewmaster. And even with the depth of field,it still feels like it's in the screen. We have gotten away from things coming out at you and making you feel like you can grab stuff.
Watching Afterlife in the theaters was a nice treat but when the bullets fly at the screen I want to feel like I'm getting shot at, or when she points the gun at the screen I want to feel like the gun is sticking out of the screen. 3D nowadays don't do that anymore. Why cant we have both DoF and 3D that comes out of the screen. Did anyone see Captain EO? Or the Muppets 3D at Disney? That was excellent 3D.
Listen it's nothing fantastic, in fact it's a terrible film. It's nothing special, if you're a Resident Evil enthusiast or just a casual RE fan, I wouldn't get it, in fact the only reason I DO have it IS because I'm a big Resident Evil fan. Otherwise I wouldn't even have bothered owning it.
I'm not happy that it has to be in 3D though. I wish this fad would just fucking die already, it's expensive and doesn't add anything important to the movie anyways. :(
Afterlife I have no desire to see because of this. Degeneration, on the other hand was woeful in another way. Because Capcom feel the need to shorehorn established characters into them, there's no room for originality that would benefit film or the viewer. The plot was different location same day crap.
I've said it many times, RE would have worked great as an anime series, giving it the visecral feel of the games, and japanese CG techniques (beyond Square) just aren't up to the task of producing a good movie. While many criticise the Dead Space animated film, to sell alongside Dead Space, but IMO, it ticked all the boxes perfectly, even with the main character. It wasn't afraid to be violent, show blood, nasty death etc.
These CG films are watered down piles of crap. Degeneration is a good example of what happens when you stick too close to the games. It felt like bad fan fiction at times. Oh no ,....zombie...run!! And not even a decent boss battle to reward us all for watching.
The conclusion. RE Live action film needs to slowly die, because Paul Anderson is a cheap bad film maker (yippee! another role for wifey in RE5). The CG films need to go too, so that Capcom can sell us the more awesome Sengoku Basara series instead. And what about other potential anime tie ins. I'd love to see a God Hand, Phoenix Wright or Shadows of Rome anime series, instead of more RE crap with lame CG and no worthwhile story.
And what I still don't understand is how Capcom can be out of touch with what we'd like to see with these CG films. Think I'm gonn have to hit up CapcomUnity about this.
Beats the shit out of the live action films anyway.
Also, 3D. =/
Degeneration sparked a similar interest but did not demand my immediate attention, even as a profound R.E fan, which may create my entire point biased, But I have seen the film Degeneration a few times and consider it to be excellent, there is a range of scenes, including an outbreak, plot development and an intriguing ending. I think that resi 5 would have benefitted from some degeneration input but nevertheless it stands complete, and a follow up concerning Leon & Claire could be Capcom's best move
