Can't find a Wii? Get used to it photo

According to our favorite PR person, Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo's Wii shortage will last a tad longer than what we've been told and promised by other Ninty execs in the past. From Kaplan via Next Gen:

“There is a lot going on behind the scenes in terms of working on what we are producing and the numbers continue to rise but the product is so very popular that we may see a supply / demand situation last for some time.”

“We are at absolute maximum production and doing everything we can. The number of units that we have been able to produce has far exceeded our hardware production in the past and the production levels of a lot of our competitors but demand continues to be really high. People are being really diligent about working with retailers to locate one but we are cognisent of the fact that a lot of fans are not able to get their hands on one yet. We are asking them to be patient and to know that we are working on this as fast as we can.”

Is this really a huge issue? Will Nintendo suffer by not being able to take full advantage of the Wii's sudden popularity? What I mean is, because the Wii is so hot now, doesn't mean it will be later, meaning that by the time production catches up with demand, could it be too late for Nintendo?

Seeing that video game publishers are scrambling to release games for the damn system, it should have a decent sized library by the end of the year.

If South Park has taught us anything, the whole "You want this? Well you can't have it." strategy seems to work pretty effectively.

I stopped looking for the fucking thing, especially after I tried and was- to put it mildly- *disappointed* by the controls for Tiger Woods at a friends' apt. Honestly, it's a $250 machine that plays Wii Bowling, Tennis, and Zelda, and those games were out five months ago.

Who wants to go to my amusement park? Great. You can't go in... Especially Kyle...

Classic.

How is constant sellouts a leading indication of imminent failure? I think everyone would like to have moved this many xbox 360's and PS3's in this short of a time frame.

Back in 2001, by this time, I already had a PS2 by walking into a store and buying it off the shelf. That's the 115 million unit selling PS2. No one can do that so far for the Wii.

Summa, does it just bother you that the non-hardcore are reaching out to play video games and that like a lot of people, graphics aren't the deal breaker on a game system?

Is that the whole thing? That someone's mom and uncle louie from baltimore want one too?

I still can't get my hands on one either. I doubt this will hurt Nintendo much in the long term though. By the time supply catches up to demand, there'll be some great titles to sustain the momentum.

Theres a shortage of Wii's and Nintendo cant fill the demand , could this shortage hurt Nintendo on the long run?

Is a news note, and not necesarily Wii bashing.

Also, I don't care that much, I hate my Wii and Im not happy of the Virtual Console,Im not a fanboy of Nintendo (with a Link tat on my arm, hah!), Im just tired of seeing bullshit Wii statistics everyday on the site.

SO.. I will give a Wii away if someone can fly to LA and kick Summa in the nuts.

Seriously.

Summa kick yourself in the nuts and I'll think about it. Im talking blue balls baby. Yeowch.

Dorock: Please do not kidd yourself, theres no publishers other than Nintendo and EA "scrambling" to release game for the Wii. The Wii (despite popular belief) is still not that "HOT" in the eyes of publishers. Maybe when they sell 10 million and beat the 360 (and still they would be a long way from the ps2) but right now is "meh"

The DS on the other hand, oh crap! even Tecmo is "scrambling" to release a game on that one.

Not to re-enforce the "kiddie" image, but I work with the wee ones and not a day goes by that a parent or child (sometimes the older kids ask, sometimes) ask me how they can get a Wii, but even some of the other teachers are looking. Just judging by the kid interest and the price...

The Wii is probably going to take the PS2's position as the center of the console universe. Fad? Eh. Maybe. But probably by the time the "Fad" ends it'll be the number 1 new console, have a huge line-up of interesting games and probably a price cut.

I do think that there needs to be improvement, but first-wave games are always kinda bleh. (Mind you there are more than a few games that I really like) I'd be shocked if this Xmas there's not a solid lineup of really good games for the Wii, coming from both Nintendo and a wide variety of 3rd part publishers.

I dont think it's an issue that Nintendo will fail because of short supply, with a 6 million in 5 months. How is this news? And why would you publish it? Wait, Summa made it so we know why.

Azrael : That's fine, it just makes me sick to see shit like this 2 days in a row from the same editor. Also , Nintendo never was in trouble and was "un-fun" until Gamecube came out.

Everyone(relative term, just deal with the term for now) wants a Wii
Everyone looks for the Wii
Obviously not everyone can GET the Wii.
People complain about a shortage becomes everyone is looking for it at the same time. Some get it, some don't.

The demand is still high for this new system. Most people want it so they are going to try and get it. I just don't get why this is such a hard topic to understand. A Company can only make SO much of something at a time. Think of it as a cupcake tray. You can only make so many cupcake trays at a time, then you have to wait for a new batch when the first group is gone. Imagine trying to feed 500 people ONE cupcake each but only with a 12 cupcake tray. How long would that take?

sorry.

I love my XBOX more than my Nintendo, and PS3 combined. So don't pull that fanboy shit on me. I love games and it's sad when bad PR is announced for shit you like, but when bullshit is published for so long on a gaming news site you've come to trust and love, one tends to get PISSED.

If I want a bias opinion I'll go watch more idiotic Youtube vids of PS3 and 360 people.

I feel as though the final question was a legitimate one. There is always some bias, but you just have to look through that.

Thing is I can't see the general public getting tired of looking for a Wii. Nintendo makes money on the hardware and don't care if they can't keep it in stock. They probably care very little if the system sells and the person doesn't buy any games for it.

That likely won't happen. The Wii's numbers are getting too good for publishers to ignore, and with that comes games. It's like the PS2 or DS. There are so many of them out there, we've seen games of all types/genres come out to please everyone. There's a lot of crap too, but more importantly, with a large user base good games will come out for the Wii and they will come from 1st (it is Nintendo after all) and 3rd party developers.

I can't believe there are people out there complaining about games coming to the Wii instead of the 360 and PS3. DJ Wheat I'm looking at you. Umbrella Chronicles has a home on the Wii cause they have the engine, they have an easily adaptable controller, and they have a large user base. It could be a shit game in the end, but for now it's a perfect example...

Snaileb, easy guy. I like Dtoid too, and the Wii bashing has become a little more in your face as of late. The way I see it. Summa will begin to eat his words. There will be good games, nay quality games. It will have a shorter shelf-life than the 360 and PS3 because soon developers and consumers will demand more, but that's when we'll see the WiiToo. I say like around 2010.5ish.

I say enjoy it. Paper Mario is awesome. Where's my Eternal Darkness: Reloaded?

I don't buy this. I can't understand how they're not able to output enough consoles to the market. Sure the thing is hot and yeah, it sells out, but Christ.

How do you explain certain BIG NAME specialty retailers getting six to twelve units over the course of three months? When I worked for EB/GameStop last holiday, our stores were only receiving Wii shipments of 3-6 units at a time ad this only happened two or three times ALL SEASON.

What the fuck?? Why can't I buy a Wii? (note: I've had one since launch) It's not simply because they're "hot," it's because retailers aren't getting any to sell. Still, there are plenty of reasons the Wii's popularity can/will taper off but I don't think supply is one of them. It's other "s" words that end in "ware" and "port."

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I wanted a wii. Pretty badly. Couldn't (and still can't) find one. And I am thanking the heavens for it.

I love Nintendo but have outgrown the blind fanboyism, and having the opportunity to try the console before buying has left me with a wait and see attitude. I eventually bought a DS and am loving it, so here's hoping the same goes for the Wii.

Honestly it depends on the upcoming games. A few of my friends are DYING to get a Wii but can't find one anywhere. They can't camp out on weekends, and we all work normal business hours during the week so it puts them SOL on snagging one.

Nintendo should be able to work round the clock processing new units, anything to make a dent at this point. Hell they might have been better off releasing this spring instead of Nov. if the drought is this bad.

Summa, you are still looking at this the wrong way. The Wii is not a fad, get used to the idea. I know it hurts your little brain, but the Wii is NOT going away.

A person like you is not interested in the Wii, but apparently there are millions of others that are. They have already sold something like 6 million Wiis, it took M$ almost a year to hit the 6 million mark on the 360. but i don't want to get into numbers.

The fact remains that the Wii is something that people want. There is a lot larger audience of people that want the Wii than do the 360 or PS3. Nintendo is going to continue manufacturing at their current rate. They could push it faster but then they would start getting disfunctional hardware.

You can hate the games on the Wii all you want, I think most of them suck, but the Wii itself is a big step forward in gaming.

I don't think that the shortage will cause the demand to decrease. If a person wants the system then they will get it when they can. I hope that nintendo can manufacture even more for the christmas season because that is the most important for them. I do think that the 360 will come on strong once Halo 3 and GTA IV are realeased. It will make me buy a 360 once I have some cash. I love my Wii. I play with my Wii all the time. Just wait until the stellar first party titles are released.

Nintendo is pretty much in a perfect situation right now. The Wii is selling faster than they can manufacture it and they haven't even released any of their big titles yet. Twilight Princess and Super Paper Mario were developed as Game Cube titles while Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Wario Ware are essentially tech demos. Even without their killer apps, the system is flying off the shelves. This means that Nintendo has extra time to develop games like Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The AAA titles are going to be even better than people were expecting because Nintendo didn't have to rush them to market in an attempt to keep the hardware moving. Nintendo's killer apps should be more than enough to keep the demand high through the end of this year.

I don't really see how they could somehow enter a horrible slump. The system is selling like hotcakes now with a pretty awful library, and when 3rd parties catch up and the system is more suitingly represented with a robust library, the sales will have no doubt slowed to a slightly less ridiculous rate, but will still be well in competition with its bigger, more powerful siblings.

I agree with what other people have said. They selling like mad almost a half year after being released, Without support from AAA titles, they are still dominating and are set on a crash course with MS for the highest number of consoles sold by the end of the year. In the next 3-4 months when the AAA titles come out is where i will disagree with you, i think that the console drought will get seriously ridiculous. Because the casual gamers and other demographics are loading up on wii's, once the AAA titles come out then the hardcore gamer will start to really want one.

@Azrael
Yes software producers are rushing to the wii. They see something selling like no tomorrow and that is where their money can be made. We see titles popping up left and right.
