We here at Destructoid are really looking forward to Super Street Fighter II Turbo Remix HD to come out. So much so, that we interviewed Rey Jimenez about the game. TWICE!
In the latest little piece of juicy news, Capcom unveiled the HD make overs for the diabolical M. Bison (or Vega, Balrog, whatever the hell you want to call him) and the super sexy Cammy. I should note that the Bison image is still a work in progress, but is looking great nonetheless. PSYCHO CRUSHER!!!
Capcom talked a little about how the online aspect of the game is coming along yesterday too. Rey also mentioned how he was this close to releasing some screenshots of the game today finally, but PR blocked him.
All in all, this has to be my favorite update yet. Why? Because I'm in love with Cammy. I don't care if Cammy could easily Xena Onatopp me, I'd still try to have sex with her.
[Thanks to teknomusik for the tip!]

On Bison.
Rule 1: Don't bother learning how to actually draw, y'know, anatomy, shape, form, sense of space and composition, colour palette. Forget it. Instead just draw loads of lines over everything, teenage boys will think it looks cool.
Rule 2: Try your hardest to pick colours that do not compliment each other, the brighter and garish the colours the better.
Rule 3: Drawing women is easy, just draw men with tits, and of course beause it's the 90's, all tits must be huge and silicon in appearance.
Rule 4: Base your style on a copy of a copy of a bad copy, that way your art will be third generation cloned crap. A bit like how the Matrix was a copy of a fake interpretation of loads of things much better, Jet Li and Ghost In The Shell can quite easily end up as Keanu Reeves and flying robot squids. This is a good thing and people will love it before they figure out it's utter crap, but by this time you will be rich. Yay.
Rule 5: Sit back and watch like minded blind fools admire your work and make you rich, if all goes well you could turn out like Rob Leifield. Don't worry, it never fails, lot's of lines, lots of muscles on muscles and lots of garish colours always does the trick, people love it, they never seem to catch on.
That's an awful lot of words for someone who misses the point of HD Remix entirely.
Your post is so beautifully ironic, you are telling me I'm missing the point? That would be comedy genius if you weren't so tragically serious.
Mising the point of crap artists who can't draw, yet are being let loose on Capcom characters designed by some of the best artists in videogame design or any other visual medium? I think not. There is no other point. Crap is crap, end of.
Unless crap is alright if it's crap done with a different point, it's meant to be crap right? Or it must be ironic like your post. Perhaps it's mant to be ironic that the amazing Capcom artists are allowing a bunch of amputated moles to reinterpret their designs.
So it's like "It could be good but we decided to make it crap, and for those who think it's crap, you're missing the point." Yeah, that works.
Reminds me of Mari from Project A-Ko.
Your 'laughing out loud' at what exactly? Do I really need to explain the concept of crap = crap. You're clutching at straws if you think these early builds are suddenly going to evolve into something worthy of the Capcom name. You are also doing the classic backtracking technique of trying to make excuses. "The reason they look like shit is because they deliberatley wanted it to look like shit." Even though the original proportions looked absolutley nothing like this, which proves to me that you can't use your eyes.
So Capcom decided "Hey guys forget about the SF Alpha artists, forget about SF3 artists, I'm sure our fans really want to see some Rob Liefield fanboys create abortions which look like bad fan art." You are deluded. Good luck trying to defend bad art, so far you've suggested that it's deliberately retarded because the origibal was retarded, even though it wasn't. Good luck.
Capcom obviously aren't interested in this side project, or taking it seriously at all, Let's see them hire some Rob Liefield fanboys to design RE5, I don't think so, they actually care about that game.
You. Because you are cracking me up.
"Do I really need to explain the concept of crap = crap. You're clutching at straws if you think these early builds are suddenly going to evolve into something worthy of the Capcom name."
I think you are looking at the original, highly exaggerated and out of proportion ST sprites through rose colored glasses.
"You are also doing the classic backtracking technique of trying to make excuses. "The reason they look like shit is because they deliberatley[sic] wanted it to look like shit."
I never said that and I assure you, I am not backtracking. This is not a remake -- it is a graphical update. This means that the hit-boxes and frames of animation stay intact. So, they need to keep the proportions in tact. Otherwise, it would throw the player completely off.
"Even though the original proportions looked absolutley[sic] nothing like this, which proves to me that you can't use your eyes."
You are really giving the ST sprites too much credit. SF2 Cammy has, and perhaps always will be, disturbingly out of proportion. As for the rest of the new "sprites," they make clear that they are early builds and even displayed a fixed version of Ken. This is well known. This is new territory they are treading and they adjust and fix as they go along.
"So Capcom decided "Hey guys forget about the SF Alpha artists, forget about SF3 artists, I'm sure our fans really want to see some Rob Liefield fanboys create abortions which look like bad fan art." You are deluded. Good luck trying to defend bad art, so far you've suggested that it's deliberately retarded because the origibal[sic] was retarded, even though it wasn't. Good luck."
This is where you kind of go off the deep end. I don't know what versions of SFA or SF3 you were playing, but the characters always had non-existent muscles, goofy upper-body-to-lower-body ratios and silly color palettes. This strikes me as pretty much typical Street Fighter.
You're confused between someone having an opinion and someone trolling. Next time some crap artists butcher some of my favourite character designs and an article about it happens to come up, I'll just STFU because I don't want to piss off people like you.
I don't know what people were thinking of when they added a comments section. By your own fuzzy logic you should STFU if you don't like what I've got to say, if you don't like it then don't comment. Troll.
I think Cammy looks OK, but I think her original look was better. Maybe I just remember her looking better, but she really didn't. Bison looks pretty kick-ass, but it's hard not to when you're on fire and in a torpedo pose.
Riser Glen is right. And I don't feel like justifying that opinion because I'm lazy.
I don't know where to begin, you are so confused and wrong that there is absolutley nothing I can say to make any difference, you clearly don't understand what qualifies as good design, and why something is pleasing to the eye.
Obviously no character designs are in proprtion to reality, that goes without saying and that's not the point, anyone who knows anything about art & design will know that's such an obvious point and not the one I was making.
Like I said, these visulas are a copy of a copy, they are an abstarction of something that was already abstracted, a style for style's sake. They haven't designed or drawn anything, they've clumsily put together a bastardised style and assumed that's all it takes. Capcom artists develped a style through observation and study of the real world. You could have characters with huge heads on tiny limbs if you want, the point is these sprites are bad drawings, they are not done well because the artists responsible can't actually draw or design. They are basically flawed regardless of style.
Every time I attack this crap artwork I get attitude from people who don't like what I'm saying, well I don't give a fuck, because I'm on the sie of good artwork here, I'm defending and representing quality work created by capable artists, and if people don't like it, I couldn't give a fuck, anyone defending this pile of crap is of no interest to me.
Go on any art/illustration forum and 99% of the people there will instantly recognise these visuals as utter shit. I hate it when people who have no experienec or background in professional design, assume they know what they are talking about. It's embarassing.
Well, you've come this far with your eyes shut, so there is nothing I can say to open them.
I can't be calm about this topic, bad art is like a kick in the balls to me. I think anyone who works in the visual medium and passionatley cares about it, can only get pissed off with crap being released, especially when there are many talented artists out there, who could do a great job for a fraction of the cost.
It's like a hand drawn animator not getting pissed off when they see yet another horrific CG animation with talking animals. If you love a medium, you care about it in ways that hurt you hard when you see it being abused.
What always amazes me is that people actually try and defend this crap. Like I'm the bad guy here, people should be pissed off with these eye rapings, not me.
Are there any decent artists here to back me up? I feel like the guy from The Invaders here.
this is just a test to see if zardoz flips out and troll stomps anyone who posts in here.
I can't compensate for people's tastes, some will like it, some won't. But everyone will see that is from an artist who can actually use their eyes and draw. She will have a waist, her knees will be in the right places, her proportions will be exagerated in the right areas, her muscles will be that of a female, her face won't look like a bulldog chewing a wasp.
Then, we can put this to bed.
Who do I send the drawing to?
Enlighten me, Morpheus. Enlighten me with your (misspelled) words and your appeals to authority. Morpheus, Free me from the Matrix of objectivity.
Sounds good. Here are the rules:
They have to match the original proportions of SF2 Cammy and match one of her stances, because these are the rules that Udon have to operate under. It shouldn't be a problem for the Master of All Things Art.
I'm focused on the crapness of these drawings not a personal battle, I've already said I'll put my money where my mouth is, I will send in my interpretation of Cammy.
Like I said, people will like and dislike it, but beyond objectivity, there is a correct way of drawing. When I get some spare time, I promise I will send in my work and you will see what I'm talking about.

"I'm focused on the crapness[sic] of these drawings not a personal battle, I've already said I'll put my money where my mouth is, I will send in my interpretation of Cammy."
I think you are confused, sport.
I thought the whole point of art was that there was no one correct way to draw things, and that people are free to create as they see fit, whether you like it or not?
No you see, that's the big mistake you have made. This isn't about me, it's about the fucking art, I'm not for one moment saying I'm the master of anything, I'm saying that I, and many other artists have reached a level whereby we can 'see' when a visual is wrong. This is completely impersonal, yet as always people decide to make it their personal business when I criticise something which has nothing to do with them. I passionately care about good design, but it remains a professional connection and not a peronal one.
I don't have to abide by YOUR rules at all, I will draw Cammy and try and keep her in a traditional Capcom style.
I am not qualified to judge the art itself, but I believe he does know a thing or two about it. He may be a bit zealous in his expression, but I'll throw my support behind him. Quit being douchebags and insisting that this is, essentially, the best they could do with the sprites.
Cammy's face does look weird.
But you obviously care what I think about "the fucking art" and are going out of your way to prove that Udon is breaking the international "this is good capcom art, this is bad capcom art" treaty.
I'm not asking you to like it, I'm asking you to make like Christopher Reeve and get off your high-horse.
It's a wrong assumption many people have about art. There IS indeed a correct way to draw things.
You have personal taste which is neither right or wrong, you have styles of art which won't be everyone's cup of tea, and again, there is no right or wrong with someone's taste.
But before you have a style, you have to develop an understanding of the world around you and how it is visually formed, this vital groundwork is either right or wrong, you either understand form and perspective or you don't, you either understand the human anatomy ot you don't.
The point I'm making is that these guys haven't even done the groundwork, they have decided to focus on style before they understand the basics, and this is very wrong and it shows. Check out any abstract or highly stylised artist, they all first understood the world before they started abstracting it.
Look, if people don't know this then they obviously don't specialise i this field, so why are people telling me that I have the problem, when they themselves are casual observers?
A welcome warm glow of meeting me half way, thanks mate.

(Thanks, guys. This thread has been cracking me up all night.)
You haven't thought this through have you. First off I never said I was amazing and secondly you don't know anything about me so I could be a very high profile artist, I have done numerous work for companies, granted, I haven't done SF sprites, but hey, it's not everyday that western artists get to produce the visuals for a Japanese developer. Japanese developers are notoriously single minded, they employ Japanese artists. Which is why it's all the more shocking that an opportunity like this one is given to Udon.
I am in the process of starting up my own company, we will produce animation, graphic novels and then hopefully produce some inependent videogames.
You have probably seen my work and don't know it, then again you probably haven't. I like remaining anonymous in comment sections like this, because I don't want my personality runing any chance of people liking or knowing my work.
