I appear to be the only person here who enjoyed Avatar. I didn't enjoy it as much as say... District 9 or Sherlock Holmes. Hell, I think I enjoyed the Princess and the Frog more, though I hardly thought it was bad.

Uh, actually Jim, that's not what he said. He was referring to people trashing the art direction or setting. That's not the same as James Cameron slagging off on ANYONE who didn't like the movie for WHATEVER reason. Just because you didn't like the movie and got to write a review about it (and your review was terrible on its own merits) doesn't mean that your flying off the handle about spunk and baby squirrels is any more valid than those same Halo fanboys he was talking about.
Funny, I dislike both Halo and Avatar.

I just saw the movie this past weekend and Halo never crossed my mind once. If you twist something around enough, then yeah you can make it look like anything else. That's what I think is happening if these "so-called fanboys saying it looks like Halo" are actually around.

Considering how much I hate Halo and its frothing at the mouth fanboys, Ill agree with James by default.

People can criticize Avatar as much as they want, but criticizing it because it "looks like Halo lol" is not justifiable.

Loving the authors who tried to make a joke that didn't work because it was based on misunderstanding and equating Halo fanboys = anyone who didn't like Avatar = himself, then hitting the comments section to attempt a weak backtrack.
If he hadn't made Aliens and the good Terminators, I think I'd have formed an angry mob to hunt him down and punch him in the balls.
So after reading the interwebs it seems a lot of people are calling it a Halo rip-off based off of the first batch of trailers.

Really successful, creative people who generate amazing cultural media phenomenons are bound to be bashed from all sides for making off handed comments about their work, and how their work has been influenced and influences other artists. Cameron made the space marine part of pop culture, anyone who denies it is petty or ignorant or both.
It was like Halo in that it had pretty colours, space marines and a big fight with those funny helecopter things that look like they have fans on top. In every other regard, it was not anything like Halo.
Was it such a problem for the movie to contain these three tenuous links to a videogame? Did some person somewhere throw their arms in the air when they saw those helecopter things and shout "Halo did that, therefore this is crap" because Pokemon came first and everyone knew that Digimon was rubbish anyway.

Although, to call Avatar an original work spawned from a closed loop of genius is stupidly arrogant. The movie is just Dances With Wolves/Last Samurai/Whatever movie about an army guy going native combined with Fern Gully.

Avatar is a terrible movie and James Cameron should just shut up. I can't believe a director that is not even close to being any good one gets so much attention.
I don't go to the movies much these days, but right now its between Sherlock Holmes and Avatar.
Personally, there's only so many movies with heavy-handed analogies that I can take. I think on a concept level, District 9 probably does it better than Avatar. Because after seeing the preview to Avatar, it felt a lot more pretentious than the route District 9 took.
See, D9 took a classic trope and turned the tables on it. Usually its the aliens that come to Earth to enslave humanity. Instead, they basically had engine trouble, came here with their advanced technology to do repairs and we liked thier stuff so much wouldn't let them fix it and leave. It was Steven King's Carrie on a more national scale, only with aliens enslaved rather than an author held hostage by his #1 psychotic fan.
The analogy of racism/slavery is no different than than we saw elsewhere, but there were interesting spins on it. Avatar just tells the same old "white men are evil and greedy" analogy. As far as the environmentalist angle goes - also done to death. Ferngully, Final Fantasy VII. Been there, done that.
Then you take a hottie like Zoe Saldana, this beautiful and elegant woman and put her in the alien makeup. That's stupidity on the scale of making Jessica Alba the Invisible Woman.

Avatar was mediocre, but i'm on Cameron's boat with this one. Halo fans accusing ANYTHING of aping the ideas of others is laughable. The art design for the humans in Halo is taken nearly verbatim from Aliens, so Halo fans taking shots at the man who basically invented space marines is fucking retarded.
