Calling all Dreamcast junkies: Soul Calibur to hit Live Arcade in HD photo

Even though the Dreamcast couldn't sustain profit in the marketplace, it featured some of the best videogames ever produced and remains as one of the greatest consoles to date. Comparisons have been made between the Dreamcast and the Xbox 360 before, and rightfully so.

Many of our favorites (more recently, Ikaruga) have been ported to the 360 in one form or another, with the latest being the first Soul Calibur. It may sound too good to be true, but according to a press briefing by Namco Bandai, it isn't.

Soul Calibur on Xbox Live Arcade will be presented in all its original glory, and then some. Not only will we get every mode from the Dreamcast version, there will also be online leaderboards and get this -- the entire game will be in high-definition.

Because the excitement of this news has no doubt caused you to soil yourself, I'm going to make this short. The fact that there's no online multiplayer angers me to no end, but as long as the XBLA port plays like the Dreamcast version and looks phenomenal in HD, it'll be a "DO WANT" for sure.

Daaaaaaym. I spent more time with SC on my Dreamcast than any other fighter save maybe SF2 om SNES. My DC doesn't work any more, I will definitely be buying this. And hi def too? Sweat creamy fillings!

meh i'll pass. I don't mind HD but no online play? what's the point?

If I want to play the best in the calibur series, I'll just switch inputs to my DC. thanks for trying anyway.

Also, no Sophitia legs = phail. One of the many reason I loathed Sophitia in SC.

This is simply frickin' awesome. I'll definitely be getting this one. Who cares if there's no multiplayer (Besides Shin)?

HD, AND all the Dreamcast game modes? That's fan-tastic. I'm with Canucker, I spent WAY too much time on this one back in the day...

Love my Dreamcast.

While this is a great game, I'm still waiting for when they give Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 an HD remake.

Now, that would be awesome but a Online mode would still be a must.

lets get it straight here. If fighters are being ported like so and have no online support, it's really just a up to dater for those who missed out or can't find. Kinda like what Ikaruga was.

otherwise, fighters aren't going to be anything but achievement whoring and time wasting fun by yourself. (unless you do happen to get others playing. but most of us here know it's rather hard to either find compeition or give competition.)

Although I'd like a MvC2 HD port, it needs online play as stated.

Goddamnit, why can't the Wii have Dreamcast games on the Virtual Console? That would make way more sense to me.

I spent hours and hours playing SC with friends who gradually mastered the game (or at least a character or two), I can probably rustle up a few of the same blokes to go a few rounds again to brush up on teh mad skillz before SC4 comes out.

Lol wtf of course there's no online. Online for a fighting game is something that can hardly be pulled off decently. So instead of having something broken that everyone will talk down on, might as well not have anything. I'm excited about this.

But I just remembered the d-pad.

As much as i loved this game, Im going to pass.
Online play is the only thing this game lacked back in the Dreamcast age. I don't see any need to pay money for the letters HD on the logo screen.
Plus SC4 is just around the corner.

Although I do commend MS for adding this great game to their list of XBLA. They've been actually adding worth while games as of late. Wish they had more online 2d fighters though. *hint King of Fighters. ;)

@ Namelessted

it makes perfect sense if they're not adding online anyways. The VC already has other Sega systems and it's retarded that they're not bringing Saturn and DC games there. The 360 controller sucks for fighting games. I would rather use the Classic or Gamecube controller to play SC.

How about dreamcast originals as a tab alongside xbox originals, because surely an hd update of soul calibur wont fit to the size restrictions? not that i have any idea how big it'd end up. And i suppose the size limit rules are just getting torn up with ssf2thdremix (short name lulz).

PowerStone 1 and 2 next PLEASE!

Sega did renew that dreamcast trademark recently didn't they? Or did I imagine that?

If I'm honest any news that can be somehow skewed to make more shenmue a possibility is good news. to me. oh yes.

I get a lot of lag on DOA even when playing with my buddy who lives about 20 minutes away from me so I don't mind the lack of online. Hopefully this is one step closer to bringing Jet Set Radio to Xbox Arcade. I've tried NOT emulating Jet Set but can't seem to get it perfect.

what I don't understand is...

why the hell are people using the D-pad for SC? Granted yea with the PS2, on the controller the analog controller isn't the best for a subsitute arcade stick (well a controller period isn't.)

but with the 8 way run and the 360 Analog controller being the default movement, this makes it rather easy for 8 way run.

Sadly, I think we'd see Power Stone 1/2 on the PSN before anything else. Remember the combo they released for the PSP? You'd think Sony would be smart enough to ensure further ports stayed in their control.

MS you guys are confusing me.

Don't get me wrong, I'd welcome Soul Calibur, as its still a superb game.

What I don't get, is how is it Cave's Ketsui and Dondopachi games were recently told they couldn't be on Live by MS, yet Bandai Namco's gem is welcome without question?

Is there a weird 2d/3d thing going on here?

You need to check your double standards out, MS. Please correct a.s.a.p.

I have to say that XBOX is kicking ass when it comes to downloadable content. PS3 has psp/ps1 game downloads but nothing to get excited about. Every so often Nintendo has a game or two come out on it's virtual console, but Xbox has a ton of new and retro stuff that's worth picking up.

Wait, Microsoft leading the way in digital distribution of games and other media... False, it's clearly a rip off of something Steve Jobs already did. Years ago. I know because I own a Mac and drink kool-aid... a lot.

While I wish it were Online Multi, methinks I'll be getting it anyways. My dreamcast is MIA, and it's good to see these wonderful games getting another chance on XBLA, now if only I can get me some sweet sweet JoJo's Bizarre Adventure with Online multi and mayhaps some HD, I'd be one happy person.

Sweet, that would be cool if you there was some kind of connectivity between this game and Soul Calibur IV. Maybe you could unlock old weapons in the new game if you had this on your hard drive. I dunno, something like thst.

Also, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 needs to hurry up and become an Xbox original as well, there's no way I'm going to pay $70 for that damn game.

I still fail to cream my jeans over any HD re-release of a game I either didn't play since I wasn't excited about or didn't have the system for. I am too far behind on new games to replay old ones :/

I prefer my PSN original games that aren't just remakes of older games. I admit the high prevalence of them on the PSN as well, but I didn't and won't buy QBert 2.0.

@RevivedDemon, they would never be able to put DC games in the Virtual Console for more than one reason. Firstly, the Wii isn't powerful enough to emulate Dreamcast Games. If they wanted to bring any DC games to the Wii they would basically have to do a full release similar to how games like Okami and RE4 have been repackaged as Wii games.

Secondly, there is no space on the Wii to download the game. You would have to have an external hard drive through a USB port and that won't be an option for most Wii users unless Nintendo comes out with a hard drive addon that is stupid proof.

Basically, DC games won't ever be able to be on the Wii
