Call of Duty: World at War becomes third fastest selling game in the UK photo

For those of you who got distressed over the Destructoid review -- especially the chap who left some hilarious hate mail in my inbox -- you can console yourself at night with the thought that Call of Duty: World at War has become the third-fastest selling game in the UK, behind GTA IV and GTA: San Andreas.

In its first week, WaW outsold Modern Warfare almost two-to-one. It has topped the UK chart, managing to put even the World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, into second place. Football Manager 09 is in the third slot, unsurprisingly.

Last week, Gears of War 2 became king of the chart, while Sony's hot holiday release, LittleBigPlanet, charted at number four. GoW2 is now occupying that fourth position, while LBP failed to get into the top ten at all this week. Ouch.

As far as WaW goes, this is hardly shocking. Big franchise, following a wildly popular release from last year. It goes to show that Activision's "yearly exploitation" method works ... although I don't know if that's the kind of encouragement Activision needs.

UK top ten:

1. Call of Duty: World at War
2. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
3. Football Manager 2009
4. Gears of War 2
5. FIFA 09
6. Guitar Hero: World Tour
7. Professor Layton and the Curious Village
8. Mario Kart Wii
9. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009
10. WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009

OK, I didn't LBP to miss the top 10 but I do think it will continue to sell throughout the life of the PS3.

It's a shame though, I am absolutely loving it. Also, pondering taking on the Bonerquest challenge.

This proves the general UK game buying public is stupid and has no taste. At least Professor Layton is on there and Wii Music isn't.

Coffeesash: The general games buying population worldwide has no taste, it has been confirmed again and again that prominent marketing and appealing to the lowest-common denominator sells more than quality.

fun campaign+ fun multiplayer= terrible game. Ah those poor diluded souls of gamers who enjoy such fun games. We play games for their profundities, their life changing dramas, and their revelations of the mysteries of being. Let the masses pursue trivialities while we play real games.

Clearly you're more easily entertained than me. I didn't find the single player fun and as for multiplayer, I have Call of Duty 4 already. I don't need to buy it again.

Feel free to continue being a dick though.

Single player CoD5 isn't fun, and without a fun single player I'm not willing to leave CoD4's multi.

Also, WiiMusic tanked!

It was lame. People bought it. What is important is that I didn't buy. So I haven't wasted my money. Although, despite the poor sales of LBP there, I continue to play and enjoy it. So all is good for me, I guess.

Well Ok, so the Brits are stupid and by shitty games. I bet when the numbers come out here in Germany, we will prove that we are at least as stupid as the Brits so I'm already facepalming in shame.

I will make this prediction though. World at War will not outsell Modern Warfare in total sales and in about 1-2 months MW will be on top of the Xbox Live multiplayer Charts again easily dumping the likes of Halo 3, Gow 2 and WaW. It's just that good.

Btw. Does anyone have the total worldwide sales of Modern Warfare? I'm having a hard time finding that number.
There's a virtual cookie in it for you ^^

Of course, now people will be disappointed with WaW, and CoD6 won't sell quickly, even if it's as good as or better than CoD4.

@ dgschrei

I believe it is 11 million copies worldwide at last count.
It was a blurb on callofduty.com some time back.

Biggest selling FPS of all time according to Activision.
I believe them.

Deserves every penny it got IMO.

Here's your reward

So there still is hope for this world because there is another game besides WoW that sells more than 10 million copies. And I agree it's worth every penny it got. We will see if WaW will manage to keep in those top 10 as long as CoD4 did. I don't see a chance.
