Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies is a thing photo

It would appear that the popular Zombies mode from Call of Duty: World at War is set to make a return in Black Ops, according to Best Buy.

The retailer has listed a set of four "Zombie Maps" that were "made famous in World at War" as part of the Call of Duty: Black Ops Hardened Edition. That pretty much confirms the return of Treyarch's undead spin-off.

This also represents the first bit of content revealed for the Black Ops special editions. Hardened and Prestige Edition were recently revealed, but no details had been given. If Best Buy is to be believed (and retailers are rarely wrong about their content), these limited versions will contain four maps for the wave-based challenge.

So there, looks like Black Ops is getting zombies. That's kind of cool.

This had to be a no-brainer for Treyarch. Zombies was the best part of CoD W@W, and I'm guessing (though I have only anecdotal evidence) that half the map packs they sold were sold based on the Zombies and not the multiplayer. (All the people I know that bought the packs bought them for Zombies).

Honestly, I think Treyarch should make an stand alone Zombies game. I know at least 5 people that would buy it, and I only know 5 people IRL that play the CoD games.

@Verision

You have a point. I hated W@W except for Nazi Zombies.

That's definately cool, but does that mean you'll have to spend extra money to get even one Nazi Zombie map when W@W gave you one for free? Seems like a rip off to me.

Nazi zombies in Vietnam? That would be awesome!

Surely they're going to be "gook" zombies or "VC" zombies rather than the Nazi type?

"Gooks in the trees!!!"

Why wouldn't they just make Vietnamese Zombies?

@Indiana Jones,

It's just zombies. They still haven't really proven themselves. I've always found Treyarch's maps straightforward and flat, but maybe that's just me.

On a side note, are they really gonna continue butchering the cold war?

I checked my store's intranet yesterday ( I work at Gamestop ) Supposedly hardened comes with the WaW zombie pack, an avatar outfit, a Black Ops medal, and the prestige has that stuff plus the RC car. The info on the zombies was pulled off the page rather quickly so I'm assuming retailers weren't supposed to leak it yet.

@Magnalon, I don't know what money is worth to you but I'm not spending $60 for a mini game.

@PsychoticDust, I think that's exactly what they're trying to do. They're going to make people spend money on things they've bought already, personally I can't get behind that. Now if you haven't bought the maps in W@W I guess you'd be able to get them for a discount since the hardened edition comes with some crap and then the 4 maps which makes them less than $5.00.

Of course a Call of Duty game is worth $20 to me so buying any "edition" of the game would be a rip off to me.

well im a halo fanboy but i bought COD:WaW primarily for the zmobies, and i was not dissapointed. I can easily say that NAzi zombies was more fun and replayable than ODST's Firefight, and if it's returning, looks like ill be picking up black ops without a doubt. still wont get as much play time as reach will, but ill keep it in rotation for sure!

Well this makes me happy.

Don't get me wrong, I hated Nazi Zombies with a passion, but that means that all of the 12 year old children and the people with the mental capacity like them will be off in the Zombie lobby while I get to play competitively with the grown-ups. Yay.

Did you play it with friends? My buddies and I raked up around 100+ hours on Nazi Zombies; it's not really a mini-game.

I'm with delriego and Magnalon, Treyarch should just go ahead and make a standalone zombie game already. It's actually a little disappointing to hear that it will just be an add-on like last time. If they made a standalone game they could add soo many more features. Oh well, I guess an add-on is better than nothing.

And what's with this "for hardened and prestige versions only" crap? I preordered the regular edition (hoping zombies would be inevitable) and now you're telling me that they're not included?!?! That will seriously piss me off.

@Rusty James

That's not what it means. You get extra MAPS for Zombies mode through preordering, but the new ones will be in the game like everyone elses.

Thanks. Yeah, I was trying not to jump to conclusions before hearing more details. So that would probably mean that the maps that aren't included with the regular version would be possibly available as DLC? I dunno. I guess we'll see. I still think the zombie mode has a large enough fan base to warrant it's own dedicated game. Maybe that's still a possibility. ;)

@delriego: survival type game modes have been in games for a while, there are even survival based full retail games. If you don't like it, fair enough, but it is nether the less a game.

I just saw this video someone sent me and it has a little more details. First of all it says that the Hardened edition will include "Four exclusive Zombie maps from World at War updated for the Black Ops engine ($15 value)". So does that mean nothing new, just rehashed levels from before.. only a little prettier due to an updated engine? Also the "$15 value" seems to confirm that they will be available as DLC for those who don't purchase the Hardened or Prestige editions.

Perhaps there's still hope of a standalone zombie game from Treyarch? I mean, I'm not genius.. but wouldn't they make a whole lot more money by creating a separate game? Since they would both be based on the same engine, it seems as though it would be just as easy to create both games at the same time. Don't they see the huge amount of demand?

I personally would like to see a full blown Night of the Living Dead style game. Where you can take shelter in a house, board up windows, and try to survive until the infantry shows up. They already have shown that they can do FPS zombies the right way.

WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE SO STUPID!?

Black Ops will have its own zombie mode with new maps shipped in EVERY copy of the game.

The preorder is to offer the old zombie maps from World At War to play along with the new ones that come with Black Ops.

They ARE NOT making a standalone game because most of the people who enjoy zombies happen to be under the age of 14 and thus their parents will only buy them so many games.

You kids are annoying.

Are you serious? A standalone zombie game wouldn't be successful? Tell that to all of the people who own L4D, L4D2, Dead Rising, and on and on and on. The only thing annoying is someone who thinks they're right contrary to reality. You could stand to be less of a troll next time.

Well, geez. You mention Left 4 Dead as if that was an example of a good game.

CoD Zombies is and plays like an afterthought. People want to pay $60 for a MINI-GAME, fine. I'll continue to call them stupid for it.

Well at any rate I cancelled my preorder for Black Ops. I just don't feel good about buying something that doesn't have fully disclosed details. No more of this "expecting" it to be good garbage. I'll hold onto my
money until I get details and reviews.

What I think is going to happen with zombies is that this "co-op" mode i've been reading about in Black Ops is the Nazi Zombies for Black Ops, but the Hardened and Prestige Editions will have the original World at War zombie maps included as a redemption code (a map pack) to go along with the maps that Treyarch has in store for us with the Black Ops disc. Who knows? Maybe the 4 original maps will be on Xbox Live Marketplace a few months after its released, so that people without the Hardened or Prestige Editions can play on those maps as well.
